Ecotourism development in Java, Indonesia: Case studies from around the world
No full textThe illegal wildlife trade, combined with deforestation and anthropogenic land use, are the main causes for the endangerment of Java’s primates. While
there are a variety of organisations working towards the preservation of these species, the high revenues needed to rehabilitate animals, conduct long-term research, or manage protected areas is often a drawback. Furthermore, organisations that focus on less charismatic species, such as the small-bodied primates of Java, often have difficulty receiving funding. The implementation of an ecotourism package would allow these organisations be to self-sustaining, and would have a positive impact on the wildlife, local communities, and visitors involved. Here we present six case studies focusing on different criteria for ecotourism. The term “ecotourism” is often utilised inappropriately, particularly when tourism management fails to consider the welfare of wildlife, viability of the environment, or livelihoods of local communities. More often, the desire to raise revenue under the guise of “conservation” overcomes concerns for animal welfare or the preservation of the landscape. We will use these case studies to build a criteria assessment, which will allow for the evaluation and assessment of ecotourism feasibility at five existing rescue centres and national parks in Java. An ecotourism package developed between these partnering organisations will then strive to meet ideal standards of ecotourism

The analysis of premature mortality by the Potential Years Lost of Live (PYLL) is made difficult when important variations exist in the into-regional mortality. In this case, overmortality implies some years of life that are lost. The PYLL rates are then highly linked to the Comparative Index Rates of Mortality.
We propose, in this paper, to calculate a Premature Mortality Comparative Index, corrected as for mortality; this index is no longer linked to the mortality rates. The cartography of the French pattern let appear significant differences.L'analyse de la mortalité prématurée par les Années Potentielles de Vie Perdues (A.P.V.P.) est rendu difficile lorsqu'il existe des variations importantes de la mortalité inter-régionale. La surmortalité implique alors des années supplémentaires de vie perdue. Les taux d'A.P.V.P. sont donc fortement liés aux taux de l'Indice Comparatif de Mortalité. Ce travail propose le calcul d'un Indice Comparatif de Mortalité Prématurée corrigé du niveau de la mortalité ; cet indice n'est plus lié aux taux de mortalité. No full textThe scale effect found its theoretical explanation first in the works of W. WEIBULL, [4], [51] and then in those of J. FRENKIEL and T. KONTOROVA, [1]. These publications concern, however brittle materials (including the phenomenon of brittle rupture of metals) for which the scale effect is of greatest importance.
The main object of the present paper is to determine experimentally the functional relation between the length L and the strength R or the yield point Q of steel bars subject to axial tension. The author proposes, on the basis of the laboratory tests carried out by himself, the use of the Eqs, (2.2). and (2.3) represented graphically (as an example) by Figs. 2-4. The numerical values of the parameters, for some steel types, are contained in Table 6. A method is proposed for
generalizing the test results (concerning test pieces of some ½/ m) to practically important cases of bars of greater length (of some tens of meters). The long bar is treated as a chain (Fig. 11) of which the links are the test pieces. A metallographic analysis confirms the statement that the principal cause of the scale effect is the non-homogeneity of materials.
