“Love from India”: Youtube qawwālī as affective solidarity in India-Pakistan relations
No full textQawwālī has proliferated globally via migration, the world music industry, and recently via digital mediation. Considering Punjab as a ‘node’ in the broader context of digital mediation of qawwālī, this chapter explores how affects are mediated across the India–Pakistan border through the vehicle of ‘memes’ expressed in comments on YouTube qawwālī videos. This chapter uses inferential statistics (t-tests, ANOVA, and non-parametric equivalents) to explore how the memes ‘love from India,’ ‘love from Pakistan,’ and others proliferate and vary between videos of Indian and Pakistani qawwāls. Discursive analysis of YouTube comments and online interviews extends this. This suggests that ‘Love from India’ memes are more prevalent on Pakistani qawwālī videos than vice versa, and videos with visual performance aspects attracted a greater prevalence of ‘love from . . .’ memes. Online interviews revealed cultural similarity and intimacy behind such memes. Comments revealed a mixture of politically tense and intimate exchanges between Indian and Pakistani commenters. Some alluded to undivided Punjab, with possible influence from Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan’s ‘Punjabiyat.’ However, statistical analyses suggested that international solidarity had more relevance. This chapter proposes that ‘love from . . .’ memes form part of a meme complex to which affects stick and are digitally mediated via Kassabian’s ‘distributed subjectivity.
