No full textA group of schoolchildren and their teacher pose for a black and white portrait at the Ella P. Stewart Elementary School taken in the early 1960's. Ella P. Stewart was the nation's first African-American woman pharmacist. She and her husband William opened Stewart's Pharmacy in 1922 and they became leaders in the Toledo community. It's been said that one of her greatest honors is having a school named after her. The school was built in 1960 to not only add needed classrooms to the Toledo Public School system but to preserve the legacy of Mrs. Stewart. The courtyard in the middle of the school has two rooms built to house her historical documents and memorabilia. Mrs. Stewart loved interacting with the children visited the school often. The school is now called the "Ella P. Stewart Academy for Girls

Ella Nora Phillips was born in Clark County Virginia in 1893. She earned a degree in Pharmaceutical Chemistry in 1916, married William Wyatt Stewart in 1920 and they moved to Toledo, Ohio in 1922. The Stewart family owned and operated Stewarts' Pharmacy on 566 Indiana Avenue from 1922 until 1945. Ella P. Stewart died in 1987. Ella P. No full textA black and white portrait taken around 1955 of Ella P. Stewart. Mrs. Stewart was the nation's first African-American woman pharmacist. As pharmacists, she and her husband William "Doc" Stewart became involved in their community giving advice and help on employment, housing and food. An advocate for human rights, Mrs. Stewart served as president of the Ohio Association of Colored Women and the National Association of Colored Women. Mrs. Stewart died in 1987 at the age of 94

The school, named after the country's first African American female pharmacist, opened in 1961. Mrs. Stewart, a staunch supporter of public education, was in attendance for the opening cermony and dedication in November of 1961. In 2003 the school became the Ella P. Stewart Academy for Girls; a same-sex school with required parental involvement. Photo was taken by Toledo Blade Photographer Clarence Bailey in July of 1961
