Hui Saplek thalesap Rongbunye haeng Sayam
The author describes Hui Saplek, a natural reservoir in Thailand. During the Ayutthaya period, King Narai hired two foreigners, a French and Italian to build the network of water supply in his palace known as Narai Palace. This palace was located in Lopburi province. The water used in the palace was drawn from Hui Saplek located approximately 8-10 kilometers from the palace
Dormant Hui Identity
Hui 回 is among the 10 officially recognized Islamic minzu 民族 (ethnic group; nationality) of China. To a difference from much previous work done on the Hui, this research project does not presume Hui as an ethnic group. Instead, issues considered by the target group to be of concern are analyzed. ' The goal of this research is to attain better understanding of how migrant Hui identity has developed into that in present day Hangzhou. It is a case study exploring Hui ethnic, religious and regional identities from the perspective of social organization. The findings of this project are mainly based on more than 50 semi-structured interviews with the Islamic minzus of Hui, Salar, Dongxiang, Bao an, Uighurs, as well as the Han majority group of China. ' The main indication is that Hui ethnicity is currently dormant in Hangzhou. While my interviewees may speak of themselves as Hui, this has not served to become a foundation for what Benedict Anderson terms as deep, horizontal comradeship. (Anderson, 1983/2006, p. 7). Instead, religion and regional identities appear to be more important factors of social organization. Islamic identity is usually more predominant in cases related to interaction with Han and the secular society it represents. Regional identities are typically more predominant in cases related to interaction among Muslims. The case of Hui in Hangzhou differs from the situation of Hui in locations such as Balong (Hillman, 2004) and Quanzhou (Fan, 2003/2009). Research indicates that Hui identity in these locations may be termed as ethnic from a circumstantialist perspective. The limited importance of Hangzhou Hui ethnicity in social organization does therefore not exclude an ethnic revival should circumstances change. This is why I have termed the situation of Hui in Hangzhou as dormant
Why are stock market returns correlated with future economic activities?
Stock price, because it is a forward-looking variable, forecasts economic activities. An unexpected increase in stock price reflects that (i) future dividend growth is higher and/or (ii) future discount rates are lower than previously anticipated; therefore, the increase predicts higher output and investment. As well, other studies argue for an important relation between the expected stock market return and investment. In this paper, Hui Guo analyzes the relative importance of these mechanisms by using Campbell and Shiller’s (1988) method to decompose stock market return into three parts: expected return, a shock to the expected future return, and a shock to the expected future dividend growth. Contrary to the conventional wisdom, the author finds that dividend shocks are a rather weak predictor for future economic activities. Moreover, the expected return and shocks to the expected future return display different predictive patterns. The results shown here, collectively, explain why the forecasting power of stock market return is rather limited.Stock market
Hong Kong cinema 1982-2002 : the quest for identity during transition
Electronic redacted version excludes material for which permission has not been granted by the rights holderThis thesis seeks to interpret the cinematic representations of Hong Kongers’ identity quest during a transitional state/stage related to the sovereignty transfer. The Handover transition considered is an ideological one, rather than the overnight polity change on the Handover day. This research approaches contemporary Hong Kong cinema on two fronts and the thesis is structured accordingly: Upon an initial review of the existing Hong Kong film scholarship in the Introduction, and its 1997-related allegorical readings, Part I sees new angles (previously undeveloped or underdeveloped) for researching Hong Kong films made during 1982-2002. Arguments are built along the ideas of Hong Kongers’ situational, diasporic consciousness, and transformed ‘Chineseness’ because Hong Kong has lacked a cultural/national centrality. This part of research is informed by the ideas of Jacques Derrida, Homi Bhabha and Stuart Hall, and the diasporic experiences of Ien Ang, Rey Chow and Ackbar Abbas. With these new research angles and references to the circumstances, Part II reads critically the text of eight Hong Kong films made during the Handover transition. In chronological order, they are Boat People (Hui, 1982), Song of the Exile (Hui, 1990), Days of Being Wild (Wong, 1990), Happy Together (Wong, 1997), Made in Hong Kong (Chan, 1997), Ordinary Heroes (Hui, 1999), Durian Durian (Chan, 2000), and Hollywood Hong Kong (Chan, 2002). They meet several criteria related to the undeveloped / underdeveloped areas in the existing Hong Kong film scholarship. Hamid Naficy’s ‘accented cinema’ paradigm gives the guidelines to the film analysis in Part II. This part shows that Hong Kongers’ self-transformation during transition is alterable, indeterminate, and interminable, due to the people’s situational, diasporic consciousness, and transformed ‘Chineseness’. This thesis thus contributes to Hong Kong cinema scholarship in interpreting films with new research angles, and generating new insights into this cinematic tradition and its wider context
Religious pathways to coping with personal death anxiety among older adult British Christians and Chinese Buddhists: afterlife beliefs, psychosocial maturity and regret management
Religion was proposed to account for the relatively low personal death anxiety found among older adults. This dissertation sought to examine the influence of religious afterlife beliefs, religiously enhanced psychosocial maturity and religious management of a past major regret on personal death anxiety in later life. Terror Management Theory and Erikson’s Psychosocial Theory were used to describe these three religious pathways to coping with personal death anxiety in later life. The cross-sectional postal survey samples consisted of 143 older adult British Christians and 141 older adult Chinese Buddhists. Structural Equation Modelling results from the British Christian survey study showed that intrinsic religiosity predicted lower personal death anxiety through: (a) fostering more benign afterlife beliefs; (b) enhancing psychosocial maturity; and (c) promoting emotional stability. No significant relationship between belief in reincarnation and personal death anxiety was found in the Chinese Buddhist survey study. Both survey studies failed to support the personal death anxiety buffering power of religious management of a past major life regret, although some religious coping strategies were associated with lower negative emotional appraisal towards the major life regret among older adults. The British survey study has been the first to demonstrate both the personal death anxiety buffering and psychosocial maturity enhancing power of religion in an increasingly secular society. The lack of relationship between Buddhist reincarnation beliefs and personal death anxiety suggests that not all religious afterlife beliefs have death anxiety buffering power as proposed by Terror Management Theory. The development of Buddhist reincarnation belief and Buddhist coping scales is a pioneering step towards developing research on under-explored Eastern non-theistic afterlife beliefs and coping measures. Implications for ways that help religious older adults cope with their personal death anxiety were discussed. Prospective cross cultural and cross-religion studies were recommended to replicate the present survey findings. Finally, self detachment (self negation) was proposed as the basis of an alternative death transcendence theory to be researched in future studies on personal death anxiety
