Moritella viscosa is the causative agent of winter ulcer disease in salmonids reared in North-Atlantic countries. In this study the effects of selected M. viscosa antigens on cytotoxicity and pro-inflammatory gene expression in an Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar Linnaeus) macrophage-like cell line (SHK-1) were examined. SHK-1 cells were stimulated with live and heat-killed bacterial cells, extracellular products (ECP) and an extracellular vibriolysin, termed MvP1. Following incubation, cytotoxicity and expression levels of interleukin-1β (IL-1β) and interleukin-8 (IL-8) were examined at different time points. Both live M. viscosa cells and ECP were cytotoxic, but neither heat-killed cells, nor the MvP1 peptidase caused cell death. Expression levels of both IL-1β and IL-8 increased significantly after stimulation with live cells, but heat-killed cells only caused increased IL-8 expression. ECP did not affect IL-1β expression, but did stimulate IL-8 expression. The isolated MvP1 peptidase stimulated both IL-1β and IL-8 expression at the highest concentration tested. This study reveals a difference in the induction of pro-inflammatory gene expression in salmon SHK-1 cells between live and heat-killed M. viscosa cells, and also that an unknown secreted factor is the main stimulant of IL-β and IL-8 expression.ID: S1050464809000990; M3: Article; Accession Number: S1050464809000990; Author: Bryndis Bjornsdottir (a, b); Author: Mark D. Laura Orvieto and the Classical Heritage in Italy before the Second World War

Laura Orvieto (1876-1953) is a Jewish-Italian author of several books for children: her masterpiece is Storie della storia del mondo. Greche e barbare, which was published in Florence in 1910 for the first time, was translated into many languages, and is still reprinted and read throughout the world. The subject of this book is the Trojan War: the Classical world appears very frequently in Laura’s writings. It was argued that her writings on Classical Antiquity were inspired by English literature for children (Nathaniel Hawthorne, Charles Kingsley, Andrew Lang): this paper reconsiders Laura’s references to the Classical culture found in her writings within the cultural background of her family (with a special attention to her husband Angiolo Orvieto’s education and interests) and of Florence at the beginning of the 20th century. Moreover, a close analysis of Laura’s published and unpublished writings reveals her effort of drawing from the ancient sources. On the other side, some handwritten notes in Laura’s manuscript of Storie della storia del mondo. Greche e barbare – published for the first time here – can be recognised as written by the classical philologist and papyrologist Girolamo Vitelli: the texts of two letters – published for the first time here, too – sent to Laura by Vitelli confirm that Vitelli read this book before publication upon Laura’s request. The Appendix includes the edition of an unpublished chapter of Storie della storia del mondo. Greche e barbare

Univerzita Karlova v Praze, Farmaceutická fakulta v Hradci Králové Katedra biologických a lékařských věd Autor: Laura Šefránková Školitel: PharmDr. Miroslav Kovařík, Ph.D. Konzultant: Mgr. Metody: Mikrodiluční bujónová metoda byla použita v první fázi testování ke...Charles University in Prague, Faculty of Pharmacy in Hradec Kralove Department of Biological and Medical Sciences Author: Laura Šefránková Supervisor: PharmDr. Miroslav Kovařík, Ph.D. Consultant: Mgr. Michaela Hympánová, Ph.D. Title: Evaluation of antimicrobial effectiveness of octenidine derivatives Diploma thesis Study program: Pharmacy Introduction: Octenidine dihydrochloride belongs to the group of so-called "gemini" surfactants, or bis-quaternary equivalents of quaternary ammonium salts (QAS). QAS are generally widely used disinfectants exhibiting relatively low toxicity and high efficacy. Bis- quaternary QAS are characterised by even better surface activity and biodegradability. Octenidine dihydrochloride is considered as a very promising antimicrobial agent for its high antimicrobial activity even against multi-drug resistant bacteria. However, its limited solubility in aqueous solvents complicates its application due to the need of organic solvents in product composition, which afterwards reduce wounds or mucous membranes tolerability. Aim: The aim of this work was to test the antimicrobial efficacy of 11 new derivatives of octenidine dihydrochloride, which were prepared with emphasis to increase efficiency and improve solubility in aqueous solutions. Methods: The microdilution broth method...Department of Biological and Medical SciencesKatedra biologických a lékařských vědFaculty of Pharmacy in Hradec KrálovéFarmaceutická fakulta v Hradci Králov

The Slovak Republic is one of the countries whose large regional differences still persist today. The Slovak Republic applies a regional policy to eliminate regional differences. This policy aims to develop lagging regions through European Union funding. This diploma thesis is devoted to Košice region which belongs to one of the less developed regions amongst Slovakia. The main goal is to clarify the issue of drawing European funds and to evaluate the impacts of drawing these funds in the Košice region in the periods 2007-2013 and 2014-2020. For the evaluation, the author will use various indicators that represent the standard of living in the region. Another goal of this diploma thesis is to point out the shortcomings in drawing from the funds and to suggest a solution for their partial elimination.
