A theoretically derived probability distribution of scour
Based on recent contributions regarding the treatment of unsteady hydraulic conditions in the state-of-the-art scour literature, theoretically derived probability distribution of bridge scour is introduced. The model has been derived assuming a rectangular hydrograph shape with a given duration, and a random flood peak, following a Gumbel distribution. A model extension for a more complex flood event has also been presented, assuming a synthetic exponential hydrograph shape. The mathematical formulation can be extended to any flood-peak probability distribution. The aim of the paper is to move forward the current approaches adopted for the bridge design, by coupling hydrological, hydraulic, and erosional models, in a mathematical closed form. An example of the application of the proposed distribution has been included with the aim to provide a guidance for the parameters estimation
Wilde Rewound: Time-Travelling with Oscar in Recent Author Fictions
In the early 1980s historical figures in general – and writers from the past in particular – entered a kind of Golden Age thanks to fiction. Through various forms of semi-biographical novels and other narratives, they have, from that time forward, been enjoying a pampered life in a new genre called “the author-as-character” (Franssen and Hoenselaars 1999) or “author fictions” (Savu 2009) that reanimate them or conjure them up in a present that constantly seeks to reassert its link with the past. This is particularly true of Oscar Wilde’s life, for his disparate and colourful personality has been time and again re-appropriated in recent fiction. This article focuses on three of these contemporary fictional depictions: an epistolary novel, an epistolary website and a fictional interview, all three dealing with a fictionalised Oscar Wilde conversing with a contemporary author who is also an interviewer in his or her own way and right. Because they are very close to each other in terms of narration (i.e. impersonation and pastiche) and subject, putting words in Wilde’s mouth as though they were his own, The Unauthorized Letters of Oscar Wilde, the website Dialogus, and Coffee with Oscar Wilde, represent three fascinating means of exploring how Oscar’s rebirth as a man and author actually takes place. Among the numerous fictional portraits of Oscar Wilde, I have thus chosen to pay particular attention to the depictions that are well anchored in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries and which do not, therefore, display a narrative that would merely take place during the fin de siècle, with only period-style people in period costume. By contrast, the three portraits are literal time-travelling narratives that endeavour to bridge the gap between past, present and future

Art and society: a consideration of the relations between aesthetic theories and social commitment with reference to Katherine Mansfield and Oscar Wilde
PhDThe chief purpose of this project is to discuss Katherine Mansfield's
aesthetic ideas in connection with those of Oscar Wilde and fin de siècle Aestheticism.
The proposed study will also analyse her Modernist technique in Symbolist terms, and
consider her major themes from aesthetic and political points of view.
The primary, underlying concern of this study is to negotiate two, often opposing
critical values: the aesthetic and the political. The artist's negotiation of the conflict
between aesthetics (art) and politics (society) is a controversial 'modern' critical issue: the
issue all serious artists and critics have been facing and consciously dealing with since
the late nineteenth century. Fin de siècle Aestheticism and Symbolism form a dominant
stream of Modernism because of this intensified shared concern over the delicate
relationship between art, life and society.
Wilde's stress on the autonomy of art is related to his notion of an ideal relationship
between art, life and society: he shows a keen awareness that the autonomy of art and
the aesthetic self-realization of the artist could be realized only in a society without any
social, cultural or moral hegemony, that is, in a society without moral, social or political
oppression. The Wildean 'poeticization' of society lies in his politicization of art; and this
aesthetic influences Mansfield's.
French Symbolism suggested to Wilde and Mansfield an aesthetic which enabled
them to realize their Aestheticism. Wildean and Mansfieldian Symbolism attempt to
'shock' the reader: they aim at breaking the reader's reading habit, and his or her
stereotypic point of view and fixed sense of values. Here lie not only the political
potential of Symbolism as a Modernist aesthetic but also the aesthetic and political link
between their Symbolism and avant-garde Modernism
BRISENT: An entropy-based model for bridge-pier scour estimation under complex hydraulic scenarios
The goal of this paper is to introduce the first clear-water scour model based on both the informational entropy concept and the principle of maximum entropy, showing that a variational approach is ideal for describing erosional processes under complex situations. The proposed bridge-pier scour entropic (BRISENT) model is capable of reproducing the main dynamics of scour depth evolution under steady hydraulic conditions, step-wise hydrographs, and flood waves. For the calibration process, 266 clear-water scour experiments from 20 precedent studies were considered, where the dimensionless parameters varied widely. Simple formulations are proposed to estimate BRISENT's fitting coefficients, in which the ratio between pier-diameter and sediment-size was the most critical physical characteristic controlling scour model parametrization. A validation process considering highly unsteady and multi-peaked hydrographs was carried out, showing that the proposed BRISENT model reproduces scour evolution with high accuracy
An initial exploration of the link relationship between UK university Web sites.
Aggregates of links are of interest to information scientists in the same way as citation counts are: as potential sources of data from which new knowledge can be mined. Builds on the recent discovery of a correlation between a Web link count measure and the research quality of British universities by applying a range of multivariate statistical techniques to counts of links between pairs of universities. This represents an initial attempt at developing an understanding of this phenomenon. Extracts plausible results. Also identifies outliers in the data by the techniques, some of which were verified by being tracked down to identifiable Web phenomena. This is an important outcome because successful anomaly identification is a precondition to more effective analysis of this kind of data. The identification of groupings is encouraging evidence that Web links between universities can be mined for significant results, although it is clear that more methodological development is needed, if any but the simplest patterns are to be extracted. Finally, based upon the types of patterns extracted, argues that none of the methods used are capable of fully analysing link structures on their own
Strategic methodology to set priorities for sustainable hydropower development in a biodiversity hotspot
Massive exploitation of freshwater systems for hydropower generation in developing countries is challenging sustainability due to cumulative environmental impacts in regions with high endemism. Habitat fragmentation is recognized as a major impact on river ecosystems. The nature and magnitude of connectivity loss depend on characteristics of the hydropower projects, and of the threatened fish communities. In areas where appropriate mitigation technology is lacking, there is a need to identify the fish species that are most at risk to better concentrate efforts. This paper aimed to set conservation priorities for sustainable hydropower development by analyzing native fish species and project characteristics. The Chilean ichthyogeographic province, an ecoregion with high endemism and massive hydropower projects development, has been considered as a case study. By using overlapping information on the characteristics of 1124 hydropower projects and distribution of native fish species, we identified three project categories of projects based on their need for mitigation. These were projects where mitigation was considered: a) not required (15%), b) required and feasible (35%), and c) required but challenging (50%). Projects where mitigation was not required were located at sites where native fish were absent and/or where water intakes allowed fish to pass. Interestingly, projects where mitigation was feasible were inhabited by a species assemblage that comprised the genus Trichomycterus, Diplomystes and Percilia, and the species Ch. pisciculus and B. maldonadoi. This finding emphasizes the need to develop a multispecific fishway that can accommodate this group. Projects where mitigation would be difficult to achieve were located at sites with a variety of different assemblages, thus making a standard fish pass solution challenging and site-specific. This study advances understanding for the need to develop mitigation strategies and technologies in ecoregions of high endemism threatened by hydropower and to prioritize the construction of planned projects.</p

Matroids generalize linear dependency in vector spaces as well as many aspects of graph theory. Moreover, matroids form a cornerstone of tropical geometry and a deep link between algebraic geometry and combinatorics. Our focus lies in particular on computing the realization space and the Chow ring of a matroid
Preserving Linked Data Integrity on the Semantic Web by application of techniques from Hypermedia
This report presents a Literature Review of past work in Hypertext link integrity and current work in the emerging area of Semantic Web link integrity. A design and prototype for a system which applies some ideas from Hypertext link integrity to the Semantic Web is presented alongside plans for future enhancements of this system. In addition other possible avenues of research regarding ideas from traditional Hypertext link integrity are briefly discussed
