    This is a copy of a letter written on April 1, 1914, by S.P. Breckinridge, an educator and activist from Illinois, to Mrs. W.O. Thompson, the wife of the president of the Ohio State University. Breckinridge wrote to Mrs. Thompson to congratulate her on recent resolutions passed by the Conference of College Women. She also wrote about her hope for all women to experience the the right to vote, a right which women in Illinois had already achieved. Breckinridge informed Mrs. Thompson that she admired the work Ohio college women were doing. The Franklin County Woman Suffrage Association was formed in 1912, after the Ohio Constitutional Convention elected to bring to a vote the question of removing the words "white male" from the state constitution with regard to voting rights. Headquartered in the Chamber of Commerce building in Columbus, Ohio, the organization put out regular publications, organized public speeches and meetings, distributed literature and held parades in support of the suffrage movement. Women's suffrage in Ohio was defeated in a special election in 1912 and again in 1914 and 1916 before a resolution narrowly passed in 1917 allowing municipal voting by women in Columbus.     Evolution of morphology in solidifying aluminium alloys

    In the thesis two different models of solidification of aluminum alloys are presented and analyzed. The first 1--D solidification model is derived from the conservation of solute, heat and mass. With numerical experiments it is shown that simulations with the Finite Difference discretization must adhere a relation similar to the Courant-Friedrichs-Lewy relation in order to get numerical stable solutions. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that depending on the chosen discretization of the interface conditions an additional singularity which can destroy stability occurs. The occurrence of this singularity is not related to the Finite Difference discretization. Singularities are also found with application of the Collocation Method. An example of a solidifying aluminum slab is successfully solved with application of the model equations and avoiding stability infringements. The possibility to apply the model in an extended simulation, i.e. especially in the second solidification model, is discussed. The second new 2--D solidification network model is used to simulate fluid flow and solidification within the mush. It is based on the assumption that the liquid parts of the mush can up to some degree be represented by a network of geometrical simplified liquid channels. Numerical simulations with this model indicate that conduction and convection of heat and solute affects directly only the permeability of a small region of the mush. Self induced effects and the formation wormholes have not been found. Finally, a detailed study of the influence of various model parameters of the network model is presented.     Actual offshore developments (steel platforms and subsea completions in up to 1025 ft. of water), the world energy situation, and continued increase in proven and probable oil and gas reserves in deep water suggest a boom in construction of submarine pipelines in over 600 ft. water depth. Human accomplishments frequently have been developed out of practice and years of experience, leaving for a later stage the theoretical aspects, which then are used as a help to get better understanding and improvement of these achievements. Installation and operation of submarine pipelines may be an example. Until now, any disaccord or lack of correlation between theory and practice might not show practical or relevant implications. However, as indicated by theoretical studies and some laboratory results, future installation of submarine pipelines in deeper waters than the present construction boundaries will require a close conformity between theory and practice. Some areas of concern may be the following: - 3-dimensional analysis of suspended pipelines from lay barges - collapse and buckling phenomena - non-linearity behaviour of pipelines - short and long term design data related to environmental conditions - sea bottom configuration and soils - second-end connection problems - correct interpretation of Archimedes' PrincipleHydraulic EngineeringCivil Engineering and Geoscience
