Information Seeking on Social Media Sites: An Exploratory Study
This study reports on a survey that was conducted to investigate the use of social media technologies for information seeking. The objective of this study is to gain an understanding of how best to provide information that is useful to information seekers. Four categories of information were explored; sensitive, sensational, political and casual information, across five social media technologies: social networks, micro-blogging sites, wikis, online forums, and online blogs. The results show that information seekers tend to use social networks, followed by microblogging sites for seeking information more than they do other social media technologies. This paper concludes with implications for practice and research
Empirical Examination of Information Privacy Concerns Instrument in the Social Media Context
Concern for information privacy (CFIP) has been widely studied across several domains using Stewart and Segars’ (2002) second-order model that includes four first-order constructs: errors, collection, unauthorized access, and secondary use. However, unlike the organizational context in which the model was developed, the social media context encourages self-disclosure of information among users and social media platform providers. Consequently, users’ concern for social media information privacy (CFSMIP) is expected to manifest differently as compared to CFIP in other contexts. In an effort to advance science in the privacy domain in Information Systems, this study therefore argues that the existing privacy model needs to be replicated in this new context to assess its validity and explanation power. Based on a sample of avid social media users, this study explores the factor structure of the four dimensions of concern for information privacy instrument posited in prior research and validated across several contexts. Exploratory factor analysis and a consequent confirmatory factor analysis revealed three first-order factors structure in the social media context. Additional analysis revealed that the three-factor second order structure of CFSMIP outperforms the four-factor second order structure from prior research
Requirements for modeling collaborative information foraging behavior: An application to emergency response organizations
Collaborative information foraging refers to the collective activities of seeking and handling information in order to meet information needs. This paper delineates requirements for modeling salient factors that shape collaborative information foraging behavior of groups. Existing modeling approaches are assessed based on their adequacy for measuring identified salient factors that shape collaborative information foraging behavior. A view of information foraging behavior as a dynamic process is presented. Consequently, this paper purports that modeling methods employed to aid understanding of foraging behavior must allow for plausible explanation of the inherent dynamism in foraging activities. This work therefore provides an initial roadmap to defining salient factors that need to be addressed in order to adequately model collaborative information foraging behavior within teams that operate in extreme environments. Twittermania: Understanding How Social Media Technologies Impact Engagement and Academic Performance of a New Generation of Learners
Twitter, a popular micro-blogging service, is increasingly evolving from being a mere chatting platform to a tool that is instrumental in affecting a desired learning and social change among individuals and organizations. Although using Twitter for learning while socializing represents a significant departure from its intended initial function, information systems (IS) researchers should further explore the impact and implications of social media technologies such as Twitter in the educational context. We draws on engagement theory and social impact theory to assess how social media technologies tools can support learning and improve students’ academic outcomes. We present an experiment in which we compared Twitter and a traditional discussion board to academically engage students over a 14-week period. The results show that actively using both Twitter and traditional discussion boards for engagement is related to student performance in the course. Social network analysis suggests that, by using Twitter, the students possibly created shared mental models that led them to engage with the class more, and therefore, better their performance
Effects of information importance and distribution on information exchange in team decision making
Teams in organizations are strategically built with members from domains and experiences so that a wider range of information and options can be pooled. This strategic team structure is based on the assumption that when team members share the information they have, the team as a whole can access a larger pool of information than any one member acting alone, potentially enabling them to make better decisions. However, studies have shown that teams, unlike individuals, sometimes do not effectively share and use the unique information available to them, leading to poorer decisions. Research on information sharing in team decision making has widely focused on the exchange of shared or unshared information in the hidden profile paradigm, neglecting the role of information importance. Informational influence theory holds that the importance of information may affect how information is processed for making decisions in teams.
This study investigates information exchange processes to understand how teams can effectively exchange and use information available to them to make better decisions. The specific research question concerns the extent to which importance and distribution of information is associated with its exchange during discussion in distributed teams. Data are collected in a laboratory study involving subjects interacting with a computer-mediated decision support system.
The results show that the importance of information, the distribution and the interaction of importance and distribution have significant main effects on information exchange. Teams tend to exchange a higher proportion of the more important information compared to the less important information. A third dimension is introduced to measure information distribution -- partially shared information -- and is found to have a strong main effect on information exchange. It is also found that the extent to which team members exchange more important information during discussion strongly correlates with the tendency to improve team performance. It is also found that task complexity is negatively correlated with information exchange performance. Teams tend to exchange a smaller proportion of information when working on complex tasks, compared to when working on simple tasks.
This dissertation makes contributions in three areas. Firstly, a theoretical model is developed that allows for the investigation of the joint relationship of the importance of information and its distribution in team decision-making. Secondly, this work introduces a new approach to investigate information sharing, exchange and use in decision-making teams. Others can apply this approach fruitfully in investigating similar phenomena outside of the current domain. Finally, this work improves the understanding of information sharing and exchange processes in relation to the distribution of information and its importance
An empirical investigation of alert notifications: A temporal analysis approach
As the deployment of situational awareness mechanisms such as geothermal sensors, use of social network sites, and information and communication technologies (e.g., cell phones) become increasingly widespread to emergency responders, the problem of alert analysis has become very important. Broadcast of large amounts of alerts sent back to command centers for processing may impair the ability of analysts to connect dots that may otherwise adequately enable them to make informed decisions in a timely fashion. This paper investigates trends and patterns embedded in alert notifications generated over a given period of time in order to uncover correlations that may exist in the data. Data for this study are obtained from the National Center for Crisis and Continuity Coordination (NC4). We employ classical time series analysis to understand, explain and predict trends and patterns in the data. This work presents results obtained thus far in the quest for the effect of passage of time on alert patterns. Implications of this work in practice and research are discussed

The Impact of Cross-Addiction on Information Sharing Behaviors on Social Networking Sites
There is a rise in the interest among researchers to understand how addiction to social networking sites (SNSs) influences the use of SNS for information sharing. Much less attention has been placed on the interactive effect of multiple addictions (i.e., cross-addiction) on information sharing behaviors on SNSs. In this study, we examine the interaction effect of SNS addiction and alcohol use on two characteristic sharing behaviors on SNSs, self-promotion, and peer promotion of alcohol use. This study contributes to theory and practice as it builds a model that integrates social cognitive theory and normative social influence to explain mechanisms through which cross-addiction shapes information sharing behaviors on SNSs. The proposed model is estimated using data from a sample of college students in a North American university. The results support the theorized relationships between cross-addiction and SNS use to promote addiction-related activities. Implications of the findings for theory and practice are discussed
