    OBJECTIVE: Insulin and the insulin-like growth factor (IGF) system regulate growth and are involved in determining muscle mass, strength and body composition. We hypothesised that IGF-I and IGF-II are associated with improved, and insulin with worse, physical performance in old age. METHODS: Physical performance was measured using the get-up and go timed walk and flamingo balance test at 63-86 years. We examined prospective associations of insulin, IGF-I, IGF-II and IGFBP-3 with physical performance in the UK-based Caerphilly Prospective Study (CaPS; n?=?739 men); and cross-sectional insulin, IGF-I, IGF-II, IGFBP-2 and IGFBP-3 in the Boyd Orr cohort (n?=?182 men, 223 women). RESULTS: In confounder-adjusted models, there was some evidence in CaPS that a standard deviation (SD) increase in IGF-I was associated with 1.5% faster get-up and go test times (95% CI: -0.2%, 3.2%; p?=?0.08), but little association with poor balance, 19 years later. Coefficients in Boyd Orr were in the same direction as CaPS, but consistent with chance. Higher levels of insulin were weakly associated with worse physical performance (CaPS and Boyd Orr combined: get-up and go time?=?1.3% slower per SD log-transformed insulin; 95% CI: 0.0%, 2.7%; p?=?0.07; OR poor balance 1.13; 95% CI; 0.98, 1.29; p?=?0.08), although associations were attenuated after controlling for body mass index (BMI) and co-morbidities. In Boyd Orr, a one SD increase in IGFBP-2 was associated with 2.6% slower get-up and go times (95% CI: 0.4%, 4.8% slower; p?=?0.02), but this was only seen when controlling for BMI and co-morbidities. There was no consistent evidence of associations of IGF-II, or IGFBP-3 with physical performance. CONCLUSIONS: There was some evidence that high IGF-I and low insulin levels in middle-age were associated with improved physical performance in old age, but estimates were imprecise. Larger cohorts are required to confirm or refute the findings

In addition to survey work for Geoscience Australia, Ryan also carried out some tasks for the Australian Antarctic Division.     Cult: A Composite Novel

    Cult (redacted) The first component of the thesis is a composite novel called Cult which falls into two parts with seven narratives in each. Part 1 tracks the protagonist, Ellen, from her first involvement with the cult through to her eventually leaving it. Although fiction, the first half of the book answers the kinds of questions the author is asked when people discover that she was once a sannyasin (a follower of the guru Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh). While the experiences of meditation, group therapy and communal living are all faithfully rendered within the stories, the need for strong characters, narrative drive and a lightness of touch takes precedence. Part 2 picks up Ellen’s story some twenty or so years later and explores what becomes of her in middle age. It also looks at other groups in society, such as academia, the law and the internet dating community which each have their own jargon, hierarchies, rituals and rules but are not considered to be cults. The book examines the question raised in the Epigraph, ‘how do we be together when we feel so alone’ with a focus on relationships other than the familial and the romantic. Collisions, Chasms and Connections: a Performative Exploration of the Composite Novel Form The second part of the thesis is both a critical and creative response to three contemporary American books: Olive Kitteridge by Elizabeth Strout; A Visit from the Goon Squad by Jennifer Egan; and Legend of a Suicide by David Vann. The critical element comprises a close reading of the three books; a chronological reconstruction of their overarching storylines; and a consideration of what their authors have said about writing the books. It concludes that, in the composite novel, the simultaneous presentation of multiple views and storylines operate much like a 3D image to give the impression of depth to the characters and situations rendered. The creative element of the essay is a playful and personal response to the texts

Helman, Ph.D. 1 computer file (PDF); ii, 76 pages, appendices A-C.Since the reauthorization of the Individual with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) in 2004, “Response to Intervention” (RtI) has permeated the field of education. With this new educational framework, general classroom teachers are taking on many new responsibilities. They are teaching more than just core reading instruction and using assessments in ways that they did not before RtI. RtI also requires that they collaborate more intensely and participate in staff developments more intently. The current study aims to focus on classroom teachers and describing their experiences. The researcher provides a review of literature concerning RtI and specific implications for the context studied and includes a summary of descriptive research design. Using the framework created by the literature review, the author describes the experiences of fifteen classroom teachers in an early total immersion program.     Most local agencies that use full-depth reclamation (FDR) choose the stabilizer to be used by selecting a vendor rather than performing test on the pavement materials. Most of the methods available for selecting the technique or additive to be used rely on a sieve test and the plastic index (PI). The PI is not sensitive at the low values found in materials like the glacial tills common across the northeast. However the Sand Equivalent (SE) is more sensitive in those materials and can be performed quickly. Five soils were tested to see if the SE with a sieve test could be used to discern if asphalt emulsion would be a good stabilizer additive for FDR. A proposed new matrix for which stabilizer technique or additive was proposed. Three sets of pavement materials (surface asphalt concrete and base gravels) were then tested to confirm the proposed stabilizer selection matrix. The results confirmed that the SE test may be a good alternative for local agencies trying to decide which stabilizer to use

    Low-volume roads (LVRs) make up more than half the centerline mileage in the United States, most of which are not designed. The Cornell University Local Roads Program worked with local highway agencies New York State to develop a mechanistic-empirical pavement design tool that overcomes the limitations of expertise and time of most LVR highway officials but takes advantage of the knowledge of their own LVRs. The tool developed, RoadPE: LHI, uses two common pavement fatigue criteria, surface tensile strain and subgrade vertical strain, with simplified inputs, and built-in trend analysis to determine the thickness of the asphalt layers for overlaid, mill and filled, rehabilitated, and reconstructed LVRs

    Progress Code: completedStatement: The survey at Davis used the ITRF2000 at 2000 horizontal datum. Henk Brolsma (AAD Mapping Officer advised that an adjustment of 1.175 metres in a direction of 354 degrees 03' True was needed to bring the data onto the Davis WGS84 datum (as it was in 1996) - the datum on which the Australian Antarctic Data Centre's GIS data for Davis is stored. Given that Grid North for the UTM zone 43 projection is 2 degrees 46' west of True North in this area, this meant an x shift of -0.004 metres and a y shift of 1.173 metres on the UTM grid. This shift was not applied to the polygon representing the Library Lounge as Ryan Ruddick advised that this building was surveyed by offsets measured from the Living Quarters and consequently the outline of the Library Lounge was derived from the WGS84 Living Quarters polygon. The stairways surveyed included two sets adjacent to the Summer Accommodation Module which was not surveyed as it had been surveyed in 2006/07. Precise orthometric height differences were observed between survey marks to be used together with the GNSS derived ellipsoidal heights of survey marks, obtained over the last decade, to develop a model of the geoid/ellipsoid separation in the area which encompasses Law-Racovita, Progress II and Zhongshan.<br/><br/>At Macquarie Island precise orthometric height differences were observed from the tide gauges in Garden Cove to the Macquarie Island ARGN station and its reference marks. The level run made direct connections to survey monuments observed in previous tide gauge benchmark level surveys conducted on the island. They also did a site survey of a proposed power house site. <br/><br/>Their work also took them to the Grove Mountains, Wilson Bluff and Dalton Corner. <br/><br/>Ryan and Alex provided documents describing most of the tasks listed above.
