Orly Livingston – Segunda parte
When Colombia was grounded, we were already here. ¡We were a people! When the Capuchinos came en the 1920s, they wanted us to turn Catholics. One day they burned all the English written Bibles in a place en San Luis. ¡and exactly at this point it started, the coconut trees got kind of white, and from there it continued over the whole island! ¡The plague was sent from the arm of God (como una reacción a la blasfemia de los capuchinos)! When we translated the Colombian nacional anthem in English y we sang it with all our feelings, the Colombians got angry. ¡That hurt me! ¡But when the "Indios" sang it in their language, the Colombians applauded! - Why? - Because they consider it as them the root s of their culture”
Orly Livingston – Primera parte
Beyond species distribution modelling: A landscape genetics approach to investigating range shifts under future climate change
Understanding how biodiversity will respond to future climate change is a major conservation and societal challenge. Climate change is predicted to force many species to shift their ranges in pursuit of suitable conditions. This study aims to use landscape genetics, the study of the effects of environmental heterogeneity on the spatial distribution of genetic variation, as a predictive tool to assess how species will shift their ranges to track climatic changes and inform conservation measures that will facilitate movement. The approach is based on three steps: 1) using Species Distribution Models (SDMs) to predict suitable ranges under future climate change, 2) using the landscape genetics framework to identify landscape variables that impede or facilitate movement, and 3) extrapolating the effect of landscape connectivity on range shifts in response to future climate change. I show how this approach can be implemented using the publicly available genetic dataset of the grey long-eared bat,Plecotus austriacus, in the Iberian Peninsula. Forest cover gradient was the main landscape variable affecting genetic connectivity between colonies. Forest availability is likely to limit future range shifts in response to climate change, primarily over the central plateau, but important range shift pathways have been identified along the eastern and western coasts. I provide outputs that can be directly used by conservation managers and review the viability of the approach. Using landscape genetics as a predictive tool in combination with SDMs enables the identification of potential pathways, whose loss can affect the ability of species to shift their range into future climatically suitable areas, and the appropriate conservation management measures to increase landscape connectivity and facilitate movement
An RNA interference knock-down of nitrate reductase enhances lipid biosynthesis in the diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum
When diatoms are stressed for inorganic nitrogen they remodel their intermediate metabolism and redirect carbon towards lipid biosynthesis. However, this response comes at a significant cost reflected in decreased photosynthetic energy conversion efficiency and growth. Here we explore a molecular genetics approach to restrict the assimilation of inorganic nitrogen by knocking down nitrate reductase (NR). The transformant strain, NR21, exhibited about 50% lower expression and activity of the enzyme but simultaneously accumulated over 40% more fatty acids. However, in contrast to nitrogen-stressed wild-type (WT) cells, which grow at about 20% of the rate of nitrogen-replete cells, growth of NR21 was only reduced by about 30%. Biophysical analyses revealed that the photosynthetic energy conversion efficiency of photosystem II was unaffected in NR21; nevertheless, the plastoquinone pool was reduced by 50% at the optimal growth irradiance while in the WT it was over 90% oxidized. Further analyses reveal a 12-fold increase in the glutamate/glutamine ratio and an increase NADPH and malonyl-CoA pool size. Transcriptomic analyses indicate that the knock down resulted in changes in the expression of genes for lipid biosynthesis, as well as the expression of specific transcription factors. Based on these observations, we hypothesize that the allocation of carbon and reductants in diatoms is controlled by a feedback mechanism between intermediate metabolites, the redox state of the plastid and the expression and binding of transcription factors related to stress responses.Peer reviewe
Entrevista a Orly Zucatto Mantovani de Assis
Orly Zucatto Mantovani de Assis is a pedagogue and started her career as an elementary school teacher in the municipality of Amparo-SP. During this period, he was interested in understanding what was happening to the students when they showed that they did not retain what they had been told about elementary mathematics. He then devoted himself to studying and deepening development and learning in a Piagetian perspective, having completed his doctorate in 1976 from UNICAMP. Her research proved that a process, named by the Researcher of the Environmental Request Process and characterized by changes in the physical environment of the room, the daily structure of activities, the conduct of the teacher, the way interpersonal relationships are processed and the type of activity and material. offered to the student, favors the child's development in its cognitive, affective, social and psychomotor aspects. This process, called PROEPRE-Preschool Education Program-initially, and laterChildhood and Elementary Education Program, based on Piagetian theory, was implemented in more than twenty State Education Departments and Municipal Education Departments in countless cities of the Federal District, São Paulo, Minas Gerais , Pará, Mato Grosso do Sul, Mato Grosso, Piaui. From 1992 onwards, PROEPRE teacher training courses were offered annually by the UNICAMP Extension School, with more than 140 classes to date. Since 1983, Professor Orly has coordinated the Laboratory of Genetic Psychology of the Faculty of Education of UNICAMP and the CNPq research group, having guided over 130 papers between theses, dissertations, course completion and scientific initiation works. It was in 1994, on the occasion of the III International Symposium on Genetic Epistemology, held in Águas de Lindóia-SP and organized by Professor Orly, that Juan Delval was in Brazil for the first time, bringing, at that time, unusual data about his research regarding social knowledge. Professor Orly is currently acting as a teacher of the Graduate Program in Education at UNICAMP and continues to coordinate LPG and PROEPRE teacher training courses.
