Clocking In Time to Gate Memory Processes: The Circadian Clock Is Part of the Ins and Outs of Memory
Learning, memory consolidation, and retrieval are processes known to be modulated by the circadian (circa: about; dies: day) system. The circadian regulation of memory performance is evolutionarily conserved, independent of the type and complexity of the learning paradigm tested, and not specific to crepuscular, nocturnal, or diurnal organisms. In mammals, long-term memory (LTM) formation is tightly coupled to de novo gene expression of plasticity-related proteins and posttranslational modifications and relies on intact cAMP/protein kinase A (PKA)/protein kinase C (PKC)/mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK)/cyclic adenosine monophosphate response element-binding protein (CREB) signaling. These memory-essential signaling components cycle rhythmically in the hippocampus across the day and night and are clearly molded by an intricate interplay between the circadian system and memory. Important components of the circadian timing mechanism and its plasticity are members of the Period clock gene family (Per1, Per2). Interestingly, Per1 is rhythmically expressed in mouse hippocampus. Observations suggest important and largely unexplored roles of the clock gene protein PER1 in synaptic plasticity and in the daytime-dependent modulation of learning and memory. Here, we review the latest findings on the role of the clock gene Period 1 (Per1) as a candidate molecular and mechanistic blueprint for gating the daytime dependency of memory processing
White stork (Ciconia ciconia) in Łęczyca District
A comparison of studies on the distribution and breeding efficiency of the White
Stork in the Łęczyca District in 1968-1970, 1975 and 1984 is presented. In the analysed
period, there occurred a significant increase in the abundance of nests not occupied by
pairs (HO + HB) and in nests built on the poles of electric traction. The spatial
distribution of stork nests is described. Besides, the author proves the limiting influence
of interspecific com petition on the breeding success of the stork in the distinguished
groupings of nests.Zadanie pt. „Digitalizacja i udostępnienie w Cyfrowym Repozytorium Uniwersytetu Łódzkiego kolekcji czasopism naukowych wydawanych przez Uniwersytet Łódzki” nr 885/P-DUN/2014 dofinansowane zostało ze środków MNiSW w ramach działalności upowszechniającej naukę
Improvement of the delivery reliability of Stork Gears & Services

Market internalized value of bio-friendly agriculture: An evaluation of impact of stork-friendly rice production on a local economy
Although there are many studies on evaluating ecosystem services in recent years, most of the studies focus on the externality of ecosystem services. Fundamentally, it is important to understand market internalized value of ecosystem services, but studies on this point of view are rare as far as the author knows.
This study evaluates the impacts on the local economy, as an internalized value of ecosystem services, caused by shifting from conventional to bio-friendly rice farming, using a case study of stork-friendly rice farming (to help conserve white storks) in Toyooka, Japan. After applying an input-output analysis, we consider whether stork-friendly rice farming created a net positive economic impact on the local economy.
The results shows that changing from conventional to stork-friendly rice faming had a high induced effect and that shifting to stork-friendly rice faming creates a net positive economic impact on the local economy
New longevity records for Black Stork (Ciconia nigra)
In 2023, the highest known age of a Black Stork was 22 years and two months. The author summarized five published and four new data on individuals (all ringed as pulli) which reached from 18 years and 3 months to 22 years and min. 2 months of life. Eight of them had besides Alu rings also readable colour plastic rings. The new knowledge is that the 22-year-old male was raising its chick
The vocabulary learning strategy „Image word’s meaning“ is often recommended in applied linguistics. The aim of the article is to find out if this supposition is true. Therefore, the underlying theories (levels of processes by Craik/Lockhart 1972 and the theory of dual coding by Paivio 1971/1985) are scrutinized. An empirical study of the author (Stork 2003) examines four vocabulary learning strategies with participants learning four sets of 20 word pairs: “Verbal repetition”, “Image word’s meaning”, “Keyword method”, “Use physical action when learning a word”. Tests were conducted (a) immediately after the sessions, (b) one week later, (c) two weeks later. The experiment demonstrates that the visualisation of foreign words is not better than rote rehearsal and that the proverb “A picture says more than a thousand words” is not true for the learning of foreign words. Consequences for the research and the teaching of vocabulary learning strategies are shown. The vocabulary learning strategy „Image word’s meaning“ is often recommended in applied linguistics. Shifts in excitatory/inhibitory balance by juvenile stress: A role for neuron–astrocyte interaction in the dentate gyrus
Childhood trauma is a well-described risk factor for the development of stress-related psychopathology such as posttraumatic stress disorder or depression later in life. Childhood adversity can be modeled in rodents by juvenile stress (JS) protocols, resulting in impaired coping with stressful challenges in adulthood. In the current study, we investigated the long-lasting impact of JS on the expression of molecular factors for glutamate and gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) uptake and turnover in sublayers of the dentate gyrus (DG) using laser microdissection and quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction. We observed reduced mRNA expression levels after JS for factors mediating astrocytic glutamate and GABA uptake and degradation. These alterations were prominently observed in the dorsal but not ventral DG granule cell layer, indicating a lasting change in astrocytic GABA and glutamate metabolism that may affect dorsal DG network activity. Indeed, we observed increased inhibition and a lack of facilitation in response to paired-pulse stimulation at short interstimulus intervals in the dorsal DG after JS, while no alterations were evident in basal synaptic transmission or forms of long-term plasticity. The shift in paired-pulse response was mimicked by pharmacologically blocking the astrocytic GABA transporter GAT-3 in naive animals. Accordingly, reduced expression levels of GAT-3 were confirmed at the protein level in the dorsal granule cell layer of rats stressed in juvenility. Together, these data demonstrate a lasting shift in the excitatory/inhibitory balance of dorsal DG network activity by JS that appears to be mediated by decreased GABA uptake into astrocytes
