Gender variation of anglicisms in German: The influence of cognitive factors and regional varieties
Get PDFWhen English nouns are borrowed into German, they need to be assigned grammatical gender. Since grammatical gender information is not present in English, the integration of anglicisms in German offers the opportunity to investigate regularities of gender assignment. Furthermore, it can be expected that the integration of loanwords can cause some variation in the usage of grammatical gender, as has been observed impressionistically for different varieties of German in previous research. This article picks up on both of these issues and first of all discusses “gender assignment schemas” for English loans based on established patterns of gender assignment in German. Secondly, an empirical study investigates gender variation across three major German dialect areas. The findings show a substantial amount of variation among many of the test items. These results are discussed in relation to cognitive schemas of gender assignment and in terms of regional variation

No full textThis article examines variation in gender assignment to English loanwords –a phenomenon that has rarely been studied on a large empirical basis to date.We report on a multi-method study of gender assignment to Anglicisms asevidenced by large newspaper corpora and experimental data elicited fromGerman native speakers, allowing empirically well-grounded insights intomethodological and sociolinguistic factors that determine gender variation. Incontrast to earlier studies which assume variation in gender assignment to beespecially prevalent in the early stages of integration, thus claiming that there iscomparatively little variation in general, our findings show a substantial amountof variation among the test items. In general, we find that variation is higher inthe informant data when compared to the corpus data

ABSTRACT: This thesis deals with the obesity of older school age children and their dependence on eating and exercising habits. The theoretical part summarizes knowledge regarding overweight and obesity, disease diagnosis, epidemiological trends and complications related to obesity. Emphasis is put on the evaluation of reasons to why this problem occurs, such as disease prevention, dietary and exercise recommendations, its therapy and inclusion of the issue with the secondary school curriculum. The practical part contains research focused on the nutritional status, eating and exercise habits of pupils in secondary school. The survey results are designed for use in pedagogical practice. Get PDFEconomic Value Added (EVA is one approach to measuring the financial performance of a company by focusing on the creation of value-added enterprises. EVA shows how big the resulting rate of return on the investment made by shareholders. In this paper, the object used by the author is wrong a company engaged in the food and beverage industry in Indonesia Stock Exchange. data used is the consolidated financial statements of the company in 2011-2012. purpose of this paper is to measure the financial performance of the EVA approach to food and beverage companies 2011-2012. Results analysis of the EVA calculation shows that by using the EVA approach, the financial performance of food and beverage companies can experience a volatile period 2011-2012. In 2011 the company's financial performance has improved food and beverage d in the presence of EVA is positive that the company has succeeded in achieving its goal create value-added enterprises. But in 2012 the company's food and beverage show poor financial performance since EVA generated negative worth. No full textResearch on apologies is: highly cross disciplinary; conducted mainly in different areas of sociology and linguistics, and focusing on both apology expressions and accounts. Goffman’s work on remedial interchanges, based on observations of everyday public encounters, has examined the role of apologies in preserving the “territories of the self.” It has also inspired the view on apologies offered by politeness theory, where apologies are viewed as strategies acknowledging the other’s right to nondistraction. At the same time, scholars working in the area of conflict resolution in private as well as in legal contexts have focused on the role of responsibility acceptance and remorse in apologizing. Cross-cultural research on apologies has established a taxonomy that has been applied to numerous languages, revealing culture-specific preferences in apologizing, while scholars studying public apologies addressed to large audiences have pointed out their function as symbolic and persuasive acts
