The Effect of Dividend Policy on the Value of Firms Listed at the Nairobi Securities Exchange
Purpose – The study sought to determine the effect of dividend policy on the value of firms listed at the Nairobi Securities Exchange. Methodology – This study adopted a quantitative approach that was modeled as a descriptive survey. Secondary data was collected in the form of published financial reports between years 2012 – 2016 from the Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE) library. The financial reports were for thirty randomly sampled companies listed at NSE. This data was analysed by use of descriptive analysis, correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis which would effectively test the relationship between the dividend policies of the companies and their value. Findings – The results of the study showed that there is a strong positive correlation between dividend policy and firm value such that an increase in dividends increases the firm value and vice versa. A regular dividend policy, residual dividend policy and firm size have a positive significant relationship with a firm’s value. The study also found that irregular dividend policy, non-dividend policy and investment positively influence the value of the firm but they have no significant effect thereon. Implications – Regular and stable dividend policies produce certainty for investors that they get regular income for their investments. Firms that adopt the above dividend policies have a benchmark for doing well and are able to accumulate or raise a large base of capital at a very low cost. On the other hand, firms that adopt irregular and non-dividend policies do not attract investors since they do not attach much importance to them given that they are focussed on the dividends that they get. Hence, management of publicly listed firms should be keen to adopt regular and stable dividend policies. Value – The outcome of this study will to add to the available knowledge in this discipline, and it will also enable scholars to carry out further research by identifying information gaps in this study. The study will also be of interest to the management of publicly quoted companies, in determining the impact of the policy of dividends on the firm value, so as to make very crucial financial choices, to enhance performance of shares at NSE, thus increasing investors’ confidence. Regulators and government agencies will be able to formulate good policies related to dividends and taxes seeing that they have a fundamental role in regulating the industry as well as protecting investors. The study will be guide investors to determine the value of firms based on their dividend policies and thereby make informed investment decisions.
Современные зарубежные исследования информационных потребностей студентов высших учебных заведений (обзор публикаций)
Educating of the culture of information needs of future specialists and teaching effective ways of how to meet them are among the urgent tasks of higher education. The goal of the paper is to characterize the status of research in the field of academic information needs. The author reviews the publications of 2015–2021, included into the Scopus and Web of Science databases. She characterizes the document flow, discusses the basic contexts of the studies, highlights the organizational and methodological aspects of research, and reveals the influence of the research base on the results of studying the hierarchy of student information needs. The relationship of and differences between the concept of academic information needs and the concept of information needs related to educational activities are demonstrated. The academic information needs are stipulated by the need to maintain academic performance, to adapt to academic work and future career, to overcome learning difficulties, to master learning methods, to get involved in student activities and academic life, to live on or off campus, and to participate in international programs, etc. The extrinsic factors affecting the formation, expression and satisfaction of academic information needs include: environment, area of study, the functions performed by the student and the timing for the assignment. The intrinsic factors are: level of education, previous experience, age, personal and physical characteristics, and level of motivation. The author argues that the specific character of academic information needs of older students is studied insufficiently. She also formulates the proposals on how to educate the culture of academic information needs.Одной из актуальных задач, стоящих перед высшим образованием, являются формирование культуры информационных потребностей (ИП) будущих специалистов и обучение эффективным способам их удовлетворения. Цель статьи – характеристика предметного поля, связанного с современными исследованиями потребностей в академической информации. Был проведён обзор публикаций за 2015–2021 гг., отражённых в БД Scopus и Web of Science. Представлены характеристика документального потока, основные контексты изучения, освещены организационные и методологические аспекты исследований, выявлено влияние базы исследования на изучение иерархии ИП студентов. Названы связи понятия «академические информационные потребности» с ИП, относящимися к учебной деятельности, а также их отличия. Академические ИП обусловлены необходимостью поддерживать успеваемость, адаптироваться к академической работе и будущей карьере, преодолевать трудности, овладевать методами обучения, включаться в студенческую деятельность и академическую жизнь, проживать на кампусе или за его пределами, участвовать в международных программах и др. К внешним факторам, влияющим на формирование, выражение и удовлетворение академических информационных потребностей, отнесены окружающая среда, предметная область, в которой студент получает подготовку, выполняемые им функции и сроки сдачи заданий. К внутренним факторам – уже имеющееся образование, опыт, возраст, личностные и физические особенности, уровень мотивации. Выявлены пробелы, связанные с недостаточной изученностью специфики академических ИП студентов старшего возраста. Сформулированы предложения по формированию культуры академических ИП.
