From Thread to Fabric: Anthropology and Its Interpreters

    No full text
In the Conclusion of the book edited by Hande Birkalan Gedik and Fabiana Dimpfelmeier, the author traces the dynamics between the thread and the fabric, going back to Fredric Barth's seminal 2000 Sydney Mintz lecture, published in 2002. Using different examples, from ideas that speak of global anthropological concerns, to the more particular issues of what it means to produce (and use) the anthropological knowledge, the chapter emphasizes the need to understand different regional traditions. This open access edition of ‘Fabrics of Anthropological Knowledge: Changing Perspectives in Europe and Beyond’, edited by Hande Birkalan-Gedik and Fabiana Dimpflmeier has been funded by Georg und Franziska Speyer’sche Hochschulstiftung and the Open Access Publication Fund of Goethe University Frankfurt am Main

A Model for Designing Climate Adaptive Shading Devices: The Case of Bayrakli Tower

    No full text
Facade is accepted as a determinant component on energy performance of a building, forming the boundaries between inner and outer conditions. With an intention to improve the building energy performance of an existing office building, facade integrated shading devices are examined through the cooling energy consumptions. OpenStudio simulation software is used for calculating heating and cooling electricity consumptions Shading. The ilding simulation model is validated by comparing the simulation results with monthly electricity consumption bills. device requirements are determined by using the building model without shading devices and simulation results are studied together with the sun path diagram analysis results. Hourly and seasonal solar movements are considered as the main parameters affecting the 'transparency' and 'elevation angles' of the shading devices. As a result of the shading device requirement analysis, climate adaptive shading device (CASD) scenarios are presented for the case building. Consequently, existing shading devices and proposed CASD scenarios are compared and discussed in terms of electricity consumptions and window solar radiation energy parameters. As a result of the comparisons, shading devices that are adaptable to both hourly and seasonal solar movements gave the highest improvement results in terms of decreasing cooling energy consumptions. Also, suggestions are given for developing the best performing facade for further studies

The study with a subject ”œExamination of Energy Efficient Housing Codes in Foreign Countries and Adaptation in to Turkey Conditions” conducted through four chapters. In the first chapter; the study was described through the purpose, the coverage and the method used for the study. In the second chapter; under the heading of ”˜The Concept of Sustainability and Constructıons' Sustainability', the definition of the concept of ”˜Sustainability' was made by referring the arising period of it. And also the methods used to measure the sustainability of the constructions were mentioned through the cited sustainable construction principles. The mostly used ones of the ”˜Assessment and Certification Methods through Criteria'; BREEAM and LEED were compared by surveying them in the frame of their basis and operating process. In the third chapter; the available samples of BREAM and LEED applications were examined and some advices on a method possible to be evaluated for Turkey were given through the applications, in the content of studies going on in Turkey on constructions' sustainability. In the fourth chapter; assessment and conclusion parts are included
