Alternative signature of TeV strings: Reduction in QCD jet production
Kin-ya Oda and Nobuchika Okada. Alternative signature of TeV strings: Reduction in QCD jet production. Phys. Rev. D 66, 095005, 2002. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevD.66.095005.In string theory, it is well known that any hard scattering amplitude inevitably suffers exponential suppression. We demonstrate that, if the string scale is (Formula presented) this intrinsically stringy behavior leads to a dramatic reduction in the QCD jet production rate with very high transverse momenta (Formula presented) at CERN LHC. This suppression is sufficient to be observed in the first year of low-luminosity running. Our prediction is based on the universal behavior of string theory, and therefore is qualitatively model independent. This signature is alternative and complementary to conventional ones such as Regge resonance (or string ball or black hole) production
Interview with YA author Vicki Grant
We feature an interview with Nova Scotian YA author Vicki Grant. Vicki is a prolific author who has written 14 books and has written over 100 episodes of children‘s TV. Vicki discusses her thoughts on reading positively and the meaning behind positivity, her favorite bad-day books, and how we as a community can promote reading positively. She makes us realize the importance of realism in writing and how important it is to connect with young readers
Interview with YA author and Children‘s Editorial Assistant Suzanne Sutherland
An interview with Young Adult author Suzanne Sutherland. The interview focuses on Toronto, the straight edge scene, music and subculture, Sutherland\u27s first book, When We Were Good and the importance of queer representation in YA books. Sutherland also recommends a number of YA novels
Universal extra dimensions on real projective plane
Hideto Dohi, Kin-ya Oda. Universal Extra Dimensions on Real Projective Plane. https://arxiv.org/abs/1004.3722.This is a pre-print of an article published in Physics Letters, Section B. The final authenticated version is available online at: https://doi.org/10.1016/j.physletb.2010.07.020.We propose a six dimensional Universal Extra Dimensions (UED) model compactified on a real projective plane RP2, a two-sphere with its antipodal points being identified. We utilize the Randjbar-Daemi-Salam-Strathdee spontaneous sphere compactification with a monopole configuration of an extra U(1)X gauge field that leads to a spontaneous radius stabilization. Unlike the sphere and the so-called S2/Z2 compactifications, the massless U(1)X gauge boson is safely projected out. We show how a compactification on a non-orientable manifold results in a chiral four dimensional gauge theory by utilizing 6D chiral gauge and Yukawa interactions. The resultant Kaluza-Klein mass spectra are distinct from the ordinary UED models compactified on torus. We briefly comment on the anomaly cancellation and also on a possible dark matter candidate in our model
A holographic dual of bjorken flow
Shunichiro Kinoshita, Shinji Mukohyama, Shin Nakamura, Kin-ya Oda. A Holographic Dual of Bjorken Flow. https://arxiv.org/abs/0807.3797.This is a pre-print of an article published in Progress of Theoretical Physics. The final authenticated version is available online at: https://doi.org/10.1143/PTP.121.121.We propose a consistent setup for a holographic dual of Bjorken flow of strongly coupled large-Nc N = 4 SYM-theory plasma. We employ Eddington-Finkelstein type coordinates for the dual geometry, and we propose a late-time expansion there. We construct the dual geometry order by order, and we show that the transport coefficients are determined by the regularity of the geometry. We also show that the dual geometry has an apparent horizon hence an event horizon, which covers the singularity at the origin. We prove that the dual geometry is regular at all orders under an appropriate choice of the transport coefficients. Our model is a concrete well-defined example of time-dependent AdS/CFT

Black hole/string ball production, possibly at LHC
Kin-ya Oda. Black hole/string ball production, possibly at LHC. https://arxiv.org/abs/1004.0559.I show a brief historical overview of recent developments on the black hole physics that can be possibly explored at LHC. I comment on the correspondence principle of black holes and strings and show its realization in a differential production cross section of a black hole/string ball with fixed angular momentum
Bare Higgs mass and potential at ultraviolet cutoff
Yuta Hamada, Hikaru Kawai, Kin-ya Oda. Bare Higgs mass and potential at ultraviolet cutoff. https://arxiv.org/abs/1305.7055.We first review the current status of the top mass determination paying attention to the difference between the MS-bar and pole masses. Then we present our recent result on the bare Higgs mass at a very high ultraviolet cutoff scale
