Crisi e Rigenerazione nella valle dell’Alto Khabur (Siria) – La produzione ceramica nel passaggio dal Bronzo Antico al Bronzo Medio

    No full text

The period of transition between the Early and the Middle Bronze Age in Upper Mesopotamia is a problematic subject: at the end of the third mil- lennium B.C. most of the urban cultures of the Syro-Mesopotamian area apparently suffer a deep crisis or a collapse, which manifest themselves in reductions, destructions or desertions. Debate has been intense on the nature, range, timing, causes and conse- quences of the crisis, assumptions and theoretical models being profoundly influenced by the developments of contemporary approaches in archaeologi- cal theory. In this context, the locally oriented extent of the crisis is of particular interest: the intensity of urban disruption in the rain-fed Khabur plains of Syria in fact does not find any parallel in the neighbouring areas. The rea- sons have to be sought in factors dealing with the peculiarity of the region: its urban history, Akkadian imperialism, land use and climate. The effects of a possible abrupt climate change have been particularly emphasised, and some explanations attribute collapse to a combination of climate and non- sustainable land use. Based on an accurate evaluation of context dates and calibration of site sequences, this paper will provide a precise overview of the archaeological evidence in the upper Khabur Plains for the period of transition between the Early and Middle Bronze Age, in order to supply a new concrete setting toward more extensive systemic reconstructions

Reading the Late Bronze Age Ceramic Evidence at Uşaklı Höyük (Central Turkey). The Pottery from the Area A Test Sounding

Excavations at the site of Uşaklı Höyük, on the central Anatolian Plateau, have revealed traces of a lengthy occupation ranging from the Early Bronze Age to the Late Roman periods. In particular, they have provided sound confirmation of the importance of the centre during the Late Bronze Age, when it was probably to be identified with the sacred Hittite city of Zippalanda. The Late Bronze Age monumental structures uncovered on the lower terrace and on the high mound had been markedly affected by later building activities, but a perfectly sealed sequence of materials has been revealed in a test sounding below monumental Building II, in Area A. After an overview of the different contexts brought to light between 2013 and 2017 at Uşaklı Höyük, the paper discusses the Late Bronze Age ceramic evidence in the frame of the long sequence of occupation of the site and against the background of central Anatolian cultural horizons. The analysis focuses on the materials from the Area A test sounding, which provide a reference post quem for the construction of the monumental Building II

The Passage from the Early Bronze to the Middle Bronze Age in Jezirah: a Parallel between Tell Mozan and Tell Barri Ceramic Sequences

Despite recent archeological efforts in this field, one of the difficulties in comprehending the period of transition between the Early and the Middle Bronze age in the Syrian Jezirah, is the still inadequate calibration of compared ceramic sequences. This paper will offer a synchronic analysis of unpublished ceramic evidence provided from Tell Mozan and Tell Barri excavations. In particular, diagnostic types in relation to the different provenance contexts will be stressed in order to give a contribution towards the building up of a chronological framework at a regional level
