Alcohol related problems, family type and youth HIV/AIDS risk behaviour

    No full text
This paper examined the extent to which youth involvement in HIV/AIDS risk behaviours is related to their patterns of alcohol consumption and differences in family structure. Random surveys were conducted and data collected from pre-degree male and female students at two institutions of higher learning in Akwa Ibom State , Nigeria. Two scales were used for data collection: Alcohol Use Disorder Identification Test (AUDIT) and HIV/AIDS Risk Behaviour Questionnaire (HRBQ) and the collected data were subjected to Chi-square goodness of fit test. Two hypotheses were tested in this study. The first hypothesis predicted a significant association between alcohol-related problems and youth HIV/AIDS risk behavior was confirmed {X2 (4) = 39.91, p < 0.05}. Results also confirmed the second hypothesis which predicted that family type would be significantly related to youth HIV/AIDS risk behaviour {X2 (1) = 4.48, p <0.05}. The results were discussed in line with existing relevant literature. Practical implications of results and recommendations were also highlighted.Key Words: Alcohol dependence, alcohol abuse, family type, hazardous drinking, responsible drinkin

Factors influencing student degree completion at a historically Black university in a southeastern urban center, 2006

The purpose of this study was to determine the influence of instructors teaching style, student learning styles, student self-efficacy, student support services, student motivation, financial aid, campus safety, and student demographics on student degree completion. The dependent variable for this study was undergraduate student degree completion. Independent variables were instructors teaching style, student learning styles, student self-efficacy, student support services, student motivation, financial aid, campus safety, and student demographics. A descriptive statistical design involving Pearson correlation, factor analysis, and multiple regression, ANOVA, and T-test were utilized to achieve the purpose of this study. A purposeful sample of those students enrolled in the School of Education, School of Business, School of Arts and Sciences, and School of Social Work at a Southeastern Historically Black University was used (n = 151). Participants in this study were undergraduate students of the aforementioned schools. Participants completed a survey instrument developed by the researcher, Dr, Ganga Persaud, and Dr. Trevor Turner. The result of the study indicated a significant relationship between student selfefficacy, student motivation, and student gender and degree completion. Female students were more likely to persist to graduation than their male counterpart. Based on these findings, recommendations for instructors, head of departments, deans, university policy makers, and researchers were given. The study was limited to one particular institutio

Comparative Evaluation of Concrete Properties with Varying Proportions of Periwinkle Shell and Bamboo Leaf Ashes Replacing Cement

    No full text
The paper examined the performance of ternary blended cement concrete incorporating periwinkle shell ash (PSA) and bamboo leaf ash (BLA) as cement supplements. PSA and BLA were obtained by burning periwinkle shell and bamboo leaves in a furnace at a temperature of 600oC for 20 minutes. The chemical analysis of the ashes revealed that they are amorphous in nature. A nominal mix of 1:2:4 with water-cement ratio of 0.65 was used as reference. The cement content of the reference was replaced with varying combined percentages (by weight) of PSA and BLA up to 40% given 10 mixes. A total of 360 cubes were cast, cured in water and tested at ages up to 56 days. The properties investigated were compressive and tensile strength, water absorption, porosity, and bulk density. The result revealed that at 28 and 56 days hydration, ternary blended cement concrete containing combined percentage of PSA and BLA of 20% cement replacement attained higher compressive and tensile strength and lower water absorption and porosity values than the reference. It is concluded that blended cement concrete of 20% cement replacement is the optimum proportion combination for ternary blended cement concrete. Keywords: Bamboo leaf ash; cement replacement; Comparative evaluation; Concrete properties; Periwinkle shell ash; Varying proportion

Dimensions of child abuse: Implications for the family in the face of systemic collapse

This paper attempts an understanding of the dimensions underlying the endemic problem of child abuse and the implications of its continued perpetuations, particularly in Nigeria. This review tested the various forms of abuse against the postulations of the different theories of abuse and declaration of the Child’s Right Bill and the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC), with the intent to uncover the underlying characteristics of Child abuse. On this basis, child abuse was identified as the sequence of physical, sexual and complex, chronic experiences of maltreatment. The author identified the dimensions of Child abuse to include: physical injury; sexual maltreatment; emotional maltreatment; deprivation of necessities and child trafficking. The analysis of child abuse reveals the emotional intensity of parent - child interaction and the psychological, social and economic well being of both parent and the child. The paper concludes that modern society would have failed if the child’s socialization were not given the serious attention that it deserves by creating an enabling family environment/background. The paper recommends comprehensive measures/strategies to solve this endemic problem that would guarantee the development of a sound mental health of the child to function successfully within the family system and the society at large

This study investigated the influence of psychoactive substance (alcohol, marijuana, and cocaine) intake and gender on crime. Three hundred and eighty participants (380) were randomly selected from inmates as models of prisons in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State. The participants comprised 314 males (82.63%) and 66 females (17.37%) with the mean age of 28.3 years. The design of the study was a survey. In this study four hypotheses were predicted. The first hypothesis indicates that there was a statistically significant influence of alcohol intake on crime committed among prisoners, X2 (df=4, N = 380) = 29.51,

The impact of oil on Nigeria's pattern of trade, 1979

The primary objective of this thesis is to investigate the impact of oil on Nigeria's pattern of trade. In doing this, we have analyzed the changing composition of Nigeria's trade and the importance of oil as a source of foreign exchange. This thesis also assesses the national and interna tional significance of petroleum production as a potential force in Nigeria's development. In fact, we have shown that crude oil is Nigeria's single largest revenue producer and largest employer of labour. The factors responsible for decrease in agricultural production and the shift of workers from agricultural to oil sector are also discussed. In addition, the need to direct foreign exchange from petroleum export to the agricultural, transportation and communications sectors is discussed in detail. Finally, the paper goes into the roles played by multinational corporations. It makes clear, the aims of these corporations and does not hesitate to point out the defects they have on Nigeria's economic development. Simi larly, this paper looks at the steps Nigeria has taken to nationalize or allow for full participation of Nigerians in multinational corporations. Finally, the paper attempts to access the impact of all of these circumstances on Ni geria's national development, employment and internal and international trade

The intent of this paper is to identify and recommend solutions to the inconsistency between zoning decisions made by the Atlanta City Council and the land use/zoning elements of the Comprehensive Development Plan. The first section consists of the introduction, which contains the definition of what is meant by zoning. The second section contains the agency's background information. Section three lays out the analytical approach and tools to be used. The last two sections give the analysis of the problem underlying the failure of the City Council to uphold the guidelines and policies of the Comprehensive Development Plan and the recommendations to resolve it. The main sources of informaton were interviews, personal observations and findings, numerical analysis and indepth examination of six selected cases
