    A Low-Cost Free-Space Optical Communication Prototype

    No full text
In this paper a prototype of a free-space optical communication system is proposed. The transmitter is equipped with a blue 1W LED and a low-cost microcontroller implementing a digital modulation scheme. The receiver converts the incoming light into a current through a photodiode and another identical microcontroller is employed to demodulate and decode the signal, after proper analog amplification and filtering. The system is thought to be used underwater for communication, e.g., between an autonomous underwater vehicle and a buoy. Preliminary results in air are shown to validate the functioning of the system with different values of solar illuminance

Automatic domain partitioning of piecewise-affine simplicial functions implementing Model Predictive Controllers

    No full text
This brief is concerned with the problem of mitigating the “curse of dimensionality” in the piecewise-affine simplicial approximation of multivariate model predictive control (MPC) functions by resorting to nonuniform domain partitions, in view of their implementation in high-speed embedded digital architectures. Two dual strategies are used to reduce the number of simplices with respect to uniform partitions, without reducing approximation accuracy. Both circuit implementation purposes and the MPC technique impose additional constraints, with respect to other techniques already available for multiresolution domain partitioning. The algorithms are tested on a benchmark example concerned with adaptive cruise control

Decentralized Second Order Sliding Mode Controller For A Storage Unit In Islanded Microgrids

    No full text
In recent years microgrids (MGs) have been gaining growing interest with respect to large scale power plants thanks to the strong presence of Renewable Energy Sources by now. In particular, the focus is on those MGs that operate in islanded mode, indeed in this condition problems regarding the MG stability arise. In order to ensure its stability and to guarantee good performance, advanced controllers for the MG's components have to be designed. In this article a decentralized second order sliding mode controller for a storage unit is developed. Since it ignores the MG layout, this strategy, which needs only local measurements, aims to make the installation and configuration of new units more flexible and simpler as possible

A Switched Predictive Controller for an Electrical Powertrain System With Backlash

    No full text
In this paper a switched Model Predictive Control strategy is applied for the speed regulation of a powertrain system composed of an electrical motor connected to a rotating load through an elastic shaft and a gear, which introduces backlash. The system is described through a piecewise-affine model and a different control law is designed for each system dynamics, which allows obtaining very simple controllers, suitable for digital implementation in embedded systems. A switched Kalman filter is employed in order to estimate the unmeasurable system states. The proposed control strategy is tested through both simulations and experiments, and is compared against a traditional proportional-integral controller

Hysteresis and creep: Comparison between a power-law model and Kuhnen's model

    No full text
In this paper we analyze some properties of a recently proposed model of hysteresis and creep (related to a circuit model, whose only nonlinear element is based on a power law) and compare it with the well-known Kuhnen's model. A first qualitative comparison relies on the analysis of the behavior of the elementary cell of each model. Their responses to step inputs (which allow to better evidence the creep effect) are analyzed and compared. Then, a quantitative comparison is proposed, based on the fitting performances of the two models on experimental data measured from a commercial piezoelectric actuator
