In this short communication, the author presents Hamman's analysis and patristic treatment of the lives of early Christians. Hamman's mastery is evident from the familiarity he shows with the social ambience in which the Fathers lived. In fact there are two works by Hamman which more than any others provide contemporary scholars and readers with an impressive body of data to ponder upon and an encouraging ideal to follow.peer-reviewe

Name of the author: Jiří Smetana Name of the MA thesis: Utopia in the Works of Adalbert Stifter University: Charles University in Prague Faculty: Faculty of Arts Department: Institute of the Germanic Studies Supervisor: Doc. PhDr. Milan Tvrdík, CSc. Place and date of publishing: Prague, March 2011 The subject of the present work is Adalbert Stifter's utopia. The aim is to outline its main essence and in part describe the motives that had led Stifter to his utopia. The work describes the artistic, political and social background of the Biedermeier era and approximates Stifter as its principal representative in Austrian literature. Adalbert Stifter's talent was versatile; he had affection for nature and art. Art was one of his most faithful friends. Stifter's Biedermeier literary works are original and in a certain sense possess great depth. For every opinion in these works is put down rationally. In this regard we would be hard pressed to find selfcontent in Stifter's late work. This opinion is also shared by the Austrian writer Peter Rosegger, who regards Adalbert Stifter higher than Johann Wolfgang Goethe for this very reason. As Rosegger rightly states, Stifter's style is also very original.1 This work takes note of the utopian features in some of Stifter's short stories and in his educational..

Petrusová, Kateřina (2011): The Characters of Children at the Work of Adalbert Stifter. Prague: Institute of Germanic Studies, Faculty of Arts of Charles University in Prague. This thesis deals with the role of children at the work of Adalbert Stifter, an Austrian author of the first half of the 19th century, born in Horni Plana (Oberplan) in Southern Bohemia. Adalbert Stifter was not just a writer and a painter but also a pedagogue (he worked as a supervisor of elementary schools for Upper Austria). All these activities, in association with his life experience and personal problems, were reflected in his literary work. I mainly focus on his three works: collections Studies (Studien), Colored Stones (Bunte Steine) and the novel (Bildungsroman) Indian Summer (Der Nachsommer). Childhood already appears in his early work, considered as a period of human development (Menschenwerdung). In Stifter's later stories, for example in his collection Bunte Steine, the characters of children are at the forefront: they are always confronted with the adult world and especially with the powerful laws of nature. This relationship is formulated in the foreword to this collection in the form of Stifter's gentle law (das sanfte Gesetz). The whole concept of the child is completed in the novel Der Nachsommer, where a..

The Philosophy of Education of Adalbert Stifter as Reflected in Der Nachsommer

    No full text
Der Nachsommer is one of the best and most well-known novels of the nineteenth century Austrian author and educator, Adalbert Stifter. Because nearly all the characters of Der Nachsommer are directly or indirectly connected with the process of education, this work lends itself especially well towards interpretation as an Erziehungsroman (i.e., a novel dealing with education.) There are a few other, and shorter, works by Stifter in which he also deals with his ideas of education, but this paper will purposely concentrate only on this, his major educational and literary work, as his other works give additional examples, but do not contribute significant new insights into his philosophy of education

Hic monachicum induas habitum: Convergences and Conflicts Around Adalbert of Prague

    No full text
The present study addresses the multifaceted personality of Adalbert of Prague with special focus on the episcopal function and the monastic formation and ideal sought by the hero. His first hagiographer, Canaparius, defines him as a bishop, monk, missionary and martyr. Adalbert himself, according to his hagiography, assumes the diversity of identities. However, along the text of the Passio sancti Adalberti saint Adalbert seems to opt for the monastic life, which is judged as superior to other ways of religious and ecclesiastical involvement such as the secular episcopal obligations. This is the result of the context of production and writing of the hagiographical piece. Consequently, the image of the saint built by the author favours the monastic ideal. Additionally, Adalbert’s reputation and experience gained at the monastery of SS. Bonifacio e Alessio becomes a means of promotion for the monastery, which played a disputed role in the expansion of Christianity in Central Europe.Fil: Neyra, Andrea Vanina.
