"Geotechnical descriptions of landslides during the 1993-1994 floods in Northern Italy"

    No full text
In Sept. 1993 and November 1994 two exceptional rainfalls occurred in Northern Italy. Due to these events, and in particular to the second, a very relevant number of slope instabilities occurred in the same area, especially in the Piedmont region of Northern Italy. The number of landslides has been very high - some hundreds - and those that involved large volumes of unstable rock or soil masses were some tens. Some of the landslides also involved civil works. It is important to notice that environmental, geological and geotechnical features are all elements necessary for a correct evaluation of the analysis of these phenomena; the need to agree on a general approach in order to recognize the slope movement types, to evaluate the economic impact of the damage, to perform the field investigations and the monitoring systems and eventually to carry out the remedial works is also necessary. This paper presents a general overview of the described phenomena

Technical features for quality procedures in tunnelling

The particulat and variable context in which tunnel constructions are built in claims for the detailed knowledge of the natural environment, the suitable design approach, the rigorous construction technique. Quality procedures in tunnelling should help to drive along these steps, also by means of assessment and monitoring methods, taking into account that the aims are the respect of expectations in terms of time, costs and overall use of the underground construction. The various phases, from planning to operation, should follow guidelines for operating staff, in a coordinated project organization and with the due exchange of knowledge: experience, goog contracts and responsibility can be the keys for the success, thus hopefully limiting the failure events and the controvercie

Soil Conditioning and Ground Monitoring for Shield Tunnelling

    No full text
Soil conditioning consists of mixing and remolding the natural material during the mechanical excavation of tunnels, generally at low depth, with additives, in order to obtain suitable properties of plasticity and consistency for the excavated material, so becoming able to apply a counterpressure against natural earth pressure and groundwater flow towards the excavation chamber. The assessment and the control of the soil parameters and of machine performance are fundamental for a regular and safe excavation, also with regards to surface stability. This paper mainly focus on testing approach aimed to the proper soil conditioning with EPB shields, whose results have been validated at real scale. The influence of the water content and the amount of conditioning foam has been studied by the Authors. A proper definition of conditioning parameters can allow to extend the application field of Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) tunnel machines to various grain soil distribution, even in weak rock formations (e.g. siltstone or flysch). Importance of conditioning is reflected also on the possibility of a proper spoil disposal or better for its reuse
