This bachelor's thesis focuses on characterizing the concept of women's writing and identifying its signs in the novels Fany, Haldy and Alma mater by Czech author Anna Maria Tilschová. In the first two chapters, the concept of women's writing is introduced through a general overview of its properties and different approaches - specifically écriture feminine by Hélene Cixous and women's or non-phallogocentric writing by Jan Matonoha. Signs of women's writing, as defined by Jan Matonoha, are identified in each of the three novels by A. M. Tilschová and then thoroughly described. The storyline of these novels, as well as a brief introduction to Tilschová herself, is also included. The conclusion of the thesis focuses not only on a final summary of women's writing, but also on reflecting its possible limitations and potential

Writing outside of logocentrism (Discourse, gender, text)

This thesis aims to examine the nature of the relationship between the kind of textual politics, here referred to as a "women's writing", and the dominant discursive practice of our culture, whose logic and functioning is best encapsulated in the Derridean term "phallogocentrism" which can be defined by variety of its characteristics (e.g. by the idea of a singular, fully controlable meaning, the adherence to the metaphysics of presence, simplisticly instrumental understanding of language, the claim for universal rationality, simplisticly homogeneus understaning of essentially complex and messy reality, ideology of a seemlessly homogeneus, fully controlable Self, anthropocentrism, the unacknowledged privileging of its own epistemic perspective etc.). "Women's writing", then, is here defined as that kind of writing which locates itself outside the domain and logic of a phallogocentric discourse, trying to challenge and undermine its hegemonic status. In this respect, "women's writing" is not delimited by the sex of an author, but by his/her gendered subjectivity, by his/her position within the discursive formation and his/her attitude to hegemonic language practices. Thus, besides the Czech writers Milada Součková, Věra Linhartová, Sylvie Richterová and Daniela Hodrová, the writing of a male author Bohumil..

O Lagrangeových multiplikátorech v metodách s lokálně omezeným krokem

Trust-region methods are globally convergent techniques widely used, for example, in connection with the Newton's method for unconstrained optimization. One of the most commonly-used iterative approaches for solving the trust-region subproblems is the Steihaug-Toint method which is based on conjugate gradient iterations and seeks a solution on Krylov subspaces. The paper contains new theoretical results concerning properties of Lagrange multipliers obtained on these subspaces

An Analysis of Erben's Bouquet within the Context of Feminist Literary Theories

    No full text
The diploma thesis An Analysis of Erben's Bouquet within the Context of Feminist Literary Theories is the first study within Czech literary criticism dedicated to this canonical collection of poetry that has been carried out from a gender perspective. In its analysis of the gender aspects contained in Erben's collection, the thesis mostly draws on methods introduced by Anglo-American feminist literary criticism during the seventh and eighth decades of the 20th century. The thesis then touches upon the potentials of poststructuralist theory for addressing gender analyses of this particular collection of poetry. Fetterley's resistant reading and reader response criticism that investigate the relationship between readers - female readers particularly - and literature, especially within the broad context of both the patriarchal society based on hierarchical gender organization and the specificities of women's lived exeperience, are the major methodological and theoretical points of departure of the thesis. The author of the thesis positions herself in an opposition towards the existing interpretations of Erben's poems that permeate the theoretical works of major literary critics which she sees as based on unreflected reproduction of gender stereotypes. The author seeks to subvert misogynist representations of..

Outside of a logocentric discourse?: The case of (post)modern Czech women's writing

This thesis aims to examine the nature of the relationship between the kind of textual politics, here referred to as a "women's writing", and the dominant discursive practice of our culture, whose logic and functioning is best encapsulated in the Derridean term "phallogocentrism". Women's writing, then, is here defined as that kind of writing which locates itself outside the domain and logic of a phallogocentric discourse, trying to challenge and undermine its hegemonic status. In this respect, women's writing is not delimited by the sex of an author, but by his/her gendered subjectivity, by his/her position within the discursive formation and his/her attitude to hegemonic language practices. Thus, besides the Czech writers Milada Souckova, Vera Linhartova, Sylvie Richterova and Daniela Hodrova, the writing of a male author Bohumil Hrabal has been also introduced into the thesis. Women's writing, as understood in this thesis, a) critically reflects upon the role of language as a decisive medium for our thinking b) questions the notion of subjectivity, which is usually equalled with the Descartean Ego and is conceived as an autonomous and sovereign entity. The authors discussed here are aware that we all are inevitably "inserted" into language. Therefore, they highlight the formative role of language by means of an ironic, palimpsest-like re-writing of conventional literary narratives, as well as by means of textual politics defined by a constant displacement of meaning. The critique of the phallogocentric concept of subjectivity is on the one hand informed by the decentering of the identity of the narrating subject, and on the other by one's awareness of one's epistemic situatedness within a particular discursive space. The process of language mediation within women's writing as I see it takes the form of a radical reassessment of conventional genres such as, for example, autobiography. Within the autobiographical texts discussed here, fragmented topologies of memory provide an ambiguous space for an attempted integration of a discontinuous identity. Women's writing also highlights the fact that "Otherness" remains unintelligible within the logic and practice of the hegemonic phallogocentric discourse. The logic and economy of women's writing is determined by the tension between its drive towards non-phallogocentric discourse, and its paradoxical, yet inevitable dependence on symbolic codes and hegemonic discursive practices. The subversive potential of women's writing, as understood here, is thus not situated within a space seen as a radical "beyond" or "outside", but it is directed inwards, into the fissures of the phallogocentric discourse itself

Men's antifeminist identity - critical analysis of men's critique of feminist men.

The general question of this diploma thesis is the compatibility of present ideas of masculinity with democracy. The thesis narrows down the field of study onto men's antifeminist identity and maps out the variety within men's antifeminist movement. The methodology of the presented research is based on semantic and discursive analyses. The identity of antifeminist men is not studied independently, but by the means of a critical analysis of the antifeminist men's construction of their relationship to feminist men. The analyzed material consists of texts in which men are critical of feminist men. The thesis shows in what ways antifeminist men use diverse discursive techniques to construct various images of feminist men, images of themselves, and images of their mutual relationships. Great attention is also paid to a critical analysis of such constructions delivered from the perspective of gender studies and men's studies; the position of the author of this thesis is also explicitly acknowledged as a departure point for a critical reflection of the discussed images, their relationships and mechanisms of their construction. Further, a collection of social practices by means of which antifeminist men contribute to the construction of "reality" are introduced. The studied case of antifeminist identity is put..

The Concept of Violence in Kobold, a Novel by Radka Denemarková

The master's thesis The Concept of Violence in Kobold, a Novel by Radka Denemarková inquires into a representation of violence in the selected literary text, written by a Czech author, from the perspective of gender analysis. Integral part of the master's thesis is the writing style "feminine writing", in which the double-novel Kobold is written. The analysis is carried out in the context of feminist literary theories. The work is therefore based on the concept of resistant reading, which is inseparably associated with the name of Judith Fetterley, and which allows us to examine the text without being influenced by the author's concept. Other inseparable pillars of this master's thesis are the works of literary theorists Pam Morris, Elain Showalter, Jan Matonoha and Hélène Cixous. Keywords: gender, resistant reading, "feminine writing", violenc

Gender stereotypes in the chosen fairy tales by Božena Němcová and Karel Jaromír Erben

I'm engaging in gender stereotypes in selected fairy tales by Božena Němcová and Karel Jaromír Erben in my dissertation. There is a gender discourse incorporated in their fairy tales, which serves as the basis for assumption of gender roles and fairy tales are becoming significant factor by gender socialization. Using feminist literary analysis I analyzed chosen fairy tales by author and authoress and classified characters from the gender perspective. I was focusing more thoroughly on four typologicaly different fairy tales (two by Němcová, two by Erben) and I was trying to demonstrate different conception and representation of femininity in them. I was investigating, which gender stereotypes are submitted to children, what kind of material is in that way submitted them to construct their gender identity and to accept gender role and whether fairy tales reproduce patriarchal gender order. Although in sporadic cases some characters exceed conventional gender roles, issues which resulted from my analysis showed, that fairy tales mostly reproduce gender inequality of patriarchal society and represent characters in gender stereotyped way

Quarkonia, including J/ψ and Upsilon mesons, are important probes of quark-gluon plasma because their suppression in heavy ion collisions provides key information about the properties of this extreme state of matter. Studying the azimuthal angle correlations of the Upsilon meson offers important insights into its production mechanism. This thesis examines the azimuthal angle correlations between pions and Upsilon mesons using data from the RHIC accelerator, specifically from p+p collisions recorded by the STAR experiment in 2017 (Run17) at a center-of-mass energy of s=510 GeV, utilizing the BHT1 trigger. Theoretical simulations predict the presence of a peak in the opposite direction of flight (awayside peak) in the correlations. The results of this thesis indicate in the correlations between pions and Upsilon mesons without subtracting the combinatorial background that there is a peak in the direction of flight (nearside peak) as well as in the opposite direction of flight. After subtracting this background, no visible structure remains

Primal interior-point method for large sparse minimax optimization

    No full text
summary:In this paper, we propose a primal interior-point method for large sparse minimax optimization. After a short introduction, the complete algorithm is introduced and important implementation details are given. We prove that this algorithm is globally convergent under standard mild assumptions. Thus the large sparse nonconvex minimax optimization problems can be solved successfully. The results of extensive computational experiments given in this paper confirm efficiency and robustness of the proposed method
