Forner-Alcaide 5 and Forner-Alcaide 13: Two New Citrus Rootstocks Released in Spain

    No full text
The search for new citrus rootstocks with better performance than those currently used is the major aim of the citrus industry in many countries. New diseases, the spread of known diseases, and citrus culture under different environmental conditions force the demand for new rootstocks. Carrizo citrange [Citrus sinensis (L.) Osb. x Poncirus trifoliata (L.) Raf.], the most used rootstock in Spain, frequently shows iron chlorosis and salinity problems. Other less common rootstocks, such as Cleopatra mandarin (C. reshniHort. ex Tan.), C. volkameriana Ten. & Pasq., Swingle citrumelo (C. paradisi Macf. x P. trifoliata), and C. macrophylla Wester, do not conveniently solve the problems. Forner-Alcaide 5 (F-A 5) and Forner-Alcaide 13 (F-A 13) are two interspecific hybrids obtained through traditional hybridization by the senior author in a program for breeding citrus rootstocks at the Instituto Valenciano de Investigaciones Agrarias (IVIA) in Moncada (Valencia), Spain. The goals of the breeding program were to obtain new rootstocks tolerant to CTV, salinity, and lime-induced chlorosis and resistant to Phytophthora sp. Latinidad de 'alcaide' y de 'alcalde'

Founding his study on semantic and formal analyses and using mostly Roman or Latin sources as well as incidentally Arab sources, the author revises the classical etymologies of alcaide and alcalde so as to provide new solutions to the problems still posed by the origins of these words. Thus, considering the earliest chronological occurences of the Arabic words qâ id and qâdi, and, on the other hand, the various ancient occurences of alcaide and alcalde, all these words are analysed, trying to find satisfactory etymologies, whether common or divergeing, able to throw a light on the circumstances which influenced the creation of the above mentioned Spanish words. Also, taking into account the existence of other words which can be considered as being similar to the words alcaide and alcalde, such as the Sicilian caitu and the Corsican capite, the author is led to the conclusion that alcaide and alcalde, as well as qâ‘id and qâdi, derive from the latin form *capitem

An XLSX Excel file which provides data used by Gregorio González-Alcaide & Aurora González-Teruel in the article “The supervision of doctoral dissertations as a reflection of library and documentation science in Spain: actors and topics (La dirección de tesis doctorales como reflejo de la biblioteconomía y documentación académica española: actores y temas)”. The worksheet “dissertations” present the following data: Author: Thesis author; Title: Doctoral dissertation title; Year: date of presentation. English abstract: Doctoral dissertations enable the transfer to research skills and capacities to future generations and the consolidation of research lines in a given area of knowledge. The field of library and documentation science in public universities in Spain is characterized by the supervision of doctoral theses by the academics in the area. We identified active professors during the 2019–2020 academic year, their date of appointment as civil servants within the public university system, the dissertations that they supervised, and their participation in papers published in scientific journals. The analysis included 644 theses. About a quarter (23%) of university faculty have never supervised a doctoral thesis, and most faculty members and tenured professors (60%) show a lower than average rate of adviserships/year since their academic appointment. There is a high concentration of PhD advisers in just a few institutions and academics (8% of university professors have supervised 42% of the dissertations), with important gender imbalances: women supervised an average of 1.8 dissertations, compared to 2.6 for men. Information units and services, study metrics and scientific publications, and information sources are the topics of 47% of the dissertations. Many of the professors with 10 or more adviserships (n/N = 12/18) lack a subject area specialization, and their role in PhD supervision was not related to their participation in research activities oriented toward publishing in scientific journals. Our results suggest that considering supervision of doctoral theses as an important academic merit could contribute to a further concentration of power and social capital among a small group of advisers. This phenomenon could reduce the plurality of topics addressed and favor suboptimal adviserships. The imbalances described emerge as another threat, exacerbating the epistemological crisis in the discipline and in the university studies of this area of knowledge. The Vesicles of Phyllomedusa sauvagii (Anura: Hylidae) Nest

    No full text
Phyllomedusa sauvagii lays its eggs surrounded by peculiar vesicles in nests made with tree leaves and, until now, the function of these vesicles was thought to be for maintaining moisture. The histomorphological and histochemical analysis of the oviduct of individuals in ovulatory period, and the study of the vesicles in the oviduct, ovisac and in the nest, showed unexpected results. Vesicles originate from glycoconjugates, proteins and lipids secreted in the PCP and PC and organized in the oviductal lumen and, according to their content, it is possible to recognize at last four types. Furthermore, both in the ovisac and in the nest, vesicles show peculiar relationships with oocites/eggs/embryos through specific communication channels, showing the existence of more complex interactions than previously thought.Fil: Pucci Alcaide, Ana.
