Economic Thought and Economic Reform in the Soviet Union
Although the history of centrally planned economies has been widely studied, the development of socialist thinking on the subject has remained largely uncharted. In this 1991 work, Pekka Sutela presents a detailed analysis of Soviet economic thought and theory. Dr Sutela traces the competing currents in the Marxist tradition of socialist economies from the Revolution to the present day. In particular he shows how the Gorbachev economic reform programme of 1987 rose from the work of Nobel Prize economist L. V. Kantorovich and his followers. However, this programme failed and the author explains in some detail why this happened. Since then, Soviet economists have tried to abandon their traditional theory of central planning and move along the path and long established contacts with leading Soviet economists, Pekka Sutela is able to show how Soviet economic thinking has moved from dogmatism through reformism to pragmatism.</jats:p

Stem diameter variation: endogenous regulation versus environmental dynamics and its implication for functional modelling
Stem diameter variations are generally modelled based on the time lag between transpiration and root water uptake. However, small differences in endogenous osmotic regulation of the storage tissue can result in significant changes in stem diameter variation. This endogenous control needs to be taken into account in functional-structural plant models to accurately predict growth
One of the main difficulties in the development of agroforestry systems research is the size and high cost of experiments which cover an adequate range of arrangements of trees and crops. One solution to this problem is to use simulation models to explore a wide range of designs and test only the best in the field. The present article presents a simulation model for the shading pattern of periodically pruned trees. The model permits to estimate the photosynthetic photon exposure during a user defined time in a field with trees once the location and dimensions of the trees, the crop height, geographical latitude and atmospheric transmittance are known. The field is divided into 50 x 50 cm squares and simulation is realized independently for all of them. The model includes the canopy transmittance parameters only for Erythrina poeppigiana (Walpers) O.F. Cook, but modifying these parameters the model could be applied for any agroforestry tree species managed with periodic prunings. The main application of the model is to explore theoretically the effect of the trees on the radiation regime above the crop in agroforestry systems.
