For this purpose, modern web application are expected to supply multimodal and multi-channel access, adaptivity and transcoding features. We will present in this work the eXtensible Dynamic Presentation Manager (XDPM) which is a set of innovative tools that support the eXtensible Presentation Language (XPL) in the adaptation of contents to different working contexts. The adaptation is performed according to the delivery context information which have been formalized by means of a profiler system. Furthermore, the growing interest for multimodal applications entails that their user interfaces have to support multiple access channels within a single development framework. User Interfaces Design Patterns (UIDPs) are helpful to define interaction schemas between user and computer and they provide remarkable tools for the design and reuse of software components. This paper describes the eXtensible Presentation architecture and Language (XPL), a framework aimed at streamlining multichannel interface design process and enabling full component reuse. To illustrate the benefits of using XPL in a large software design project, a case study of an XPL application concerning a questionnaire form filling system is described, highlighting the benefits of employing visual and verbal design patterns and their synchronization during multimodal interface development

    A Workflow Management System for Ontology Engineering

    The Semantic Web approach based on the ontological representation of knowledge domains seems very useful for improving document management practices, the formal and machine-mediated communication among people and work team and supports knowledge based productive processes. The effectiveness of a semantic information management system is set by the quality of the ontology. The development of ontologies requires experts on the application domain and on the technical issues as representation formalism, languages, and tools. In this chapter a methodology for ontology developing is presented. It is structured in six phases (feasibility study, expliciting of the knowledge base, logic modelling, implementation, test, extension, and maintaining) and highlights the flow of information among phases and activities, the external variables required for completing the project, the human and structural resources involved in the process. The defined methodology is independent of any particular knowledge field, so it can be used whenever an ontology is required. The methodology for ontology developing was implemented in a prototypal workflow management system that will be deployed in the back office area of the SIMS (Semantic Information Management System), a technological platform that is going to be developed for the research project DISCoRSO founded by the Italian Minister of University and Research. The main components of the workflow management system are the editor and the runtime environment. The Enhydra JaWE and Enhydra Shark are well suited as they implement the workflow management standards (languages), they are able to manage complex projects (many tasks, activities, people) and they are open source. </jats:p

    Qos-driven web services selection in autonomic grid environments

    Abstract. In the Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) complex applications can be described as business processes from independently developed services that can be selected at run time on the basis of the provided Quality of Service (QoS). However, QoS requirements are difficult to satisfy especially for the high variability of Internet application workloads. Autonomic grid architectures, which provide basic mechanisms to dynamically re-configure service center infrastructures, can be be exploited to fullfill varying QoS requirements. We tackle the problem of selection Web service of a business process and a Web service which implements the abstract description, such that the overall quality of service perceived by the user is maximized. The proposed solution guarantees the fulfillment of global constraints, considers variable quality of service profile of component Web services and the long term process execution. The soundness of the proposed solution is shown trough the results obtained on an industrial application example. Furthermore, preliminary computational experiments show that the identified solution has a gap of few percentage units to the global optimum of the problem.
