Asymptomatic Bacteriuria or Urinary Tract Infection? New and Old Biomarkers
Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are among the most common infective disease in the adult population. UTI diagnosis is based essentially on the presence of lower urinary tract symptoms (e.g., dysuria, urgency, and frequency) and the evidence of bacteriuria (by dipstick testing and/or urine culture). UTI diagnosis is not always easy because symptoms can be vague, or patient basal conditions can interfere negatively with the diagnostic process, whereas urine culture is still ongoing. In those cases, the differential diagnosis among UTIs and asymptomatic bacteriuria (ABU) may be challenging, while the clinician has to decide whether to start an antibiotic treatment shortly. The purpose of the present review is to analyze the biomarkers that could help in UTI diagnosis. Some biomarkers, such as procalcitonin, interleukin-6, neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin, chemokines, lactoferrin, and bone morphogenetic protein-2, seem promising in UTI diagnosis, while other biomarkers failed to show any utility. Whereas a single biomarker was not enough, a combination of biomarkers could have more chances to help in the diagnosis
Gas-phase diastereoselectivity of secondary 5-substituted (X)-adamant-2-yl (X= F, Si (CH 3)3) cations
Secondary 5-X-adamant-2-yl cations IX (X = F, Si(CH3)3) were generated in the gas phase (total pressure = 760 torr) from protonation-induced defluorination of epimeric 2-F-5-X-adamantanes 1X and their kinetic diastereoselectivity toward CH318OH studied in the 40-160 C range. The facial selectivity of IX is insensitive to the compn. of the starting 1X epimers as well as to the presence and the concn. of a powerful base (N(C2H5)3). This kinetic picture, supported by B3LYP/6-31G* calcns., is consistent with a single stable pyramidalized structure for IX, i.e., (Z)-5-F-adamant-2-yl (IZF) and (E)-5-Si(CH3)3-adamant-2-yl cations (IESi). The temp. dependence of the IX diastereoselectivity lends support to the intermediacy of noncovalent adducts [IX.bul.CH318OH], characterized by a specific C2-H+O18(H)CH3 hydrogen bonding interaction. Their conversion to the covalently bonded O-methylated (Z)- (IIZX) and (E)-5-X-adamantan-2-ols (IIEX; X = F, Si(CH3)3) is governed by activation parameters, whose magnitude depends on the specific IX face accommodating CH318OH. The gas-phase diastereoselectivity of IX toward CH318OH is compared to that exhibited in related gas-phase and soln. processes. The emerging picture indicates that the factors detg. the diastereoselectivity of IX toward simple nucleophiles in the gaseous and condensed media are completely different
Managing soil nitrate with cover crops and buffer strips in Sicilian vineyards
When soil nitrate levels are low, plants suffer nitrogen (N) deficiency but when the levels are excessive, soil nitrates can pollute surface and subsurface waters. Strategies to reduce the nitrate pollution are necessary to reach a sustainable use of resources such as soil, water and plant. Buffer strips and cover crops can contribute to the management of soil nitrates, but little is known of their effectiveness in semiarid vineyards plantations. The research was carried out in the south coast of Sicily (Italy) to evaluate nitrate trends in a vineyard managed both conventionally and using two different cover crops (Triticum durum and Vicia sativa cover crop). A 10 m-wide buffer strip was seeded with Lolium perenne at the bottom of the vineyard. Soil nitrate was measured monthly and nitrate movement was monitored by application of a 15N tracer to a narrow strip between the bottom of vineyard and the buffer and non-buffer strips. Lolium perenne biomass yield in the buffer strips and its isotopic nitrogen content were monitored. Vicia sativa cover crop management contributed with an excess of nitrogen, and the soil management determined the nitrogen content at the buffer areas. A 6 m buffer strip reduced the nitrate by 42% with and by 46% with a 9 m buffer strip. Thanks to catch crops, farmers can manage the N content and its distribution into the soil over the year, can reduced fertilizer wastage and reduce N pollution of surface and groundwater. © 2013 Author(s)
