No full textThe sole surviving copy of the Martyrologium by the St. St. Gall monk Notker Balbulus (d. 912), a work written in about 900 and following. This particular copy from the first half of the 10th century is incomplete: a martyrology includes short biographies of the saints according to their given days in the calendar year, but information about saints for dates from June 13-17, July 3-6, August 19-26, October 27 and December 31 is missing. It is very likely that Notker Balbulus never completed the ambitious project of writing the original Martyrologium.Online Since: 2009-07-3

No full textIn the 880s, Notker Balbulus (c. 840–912), a monk in the monastery of Sankt Gallen on the southern shore of the Bodensee, was challenged by his friend Tuotilo to write a new Life of the cloister’s eponymous saint.1 Although several Lives were already available, Notker decided to take up the gauntlet. The piece of hagiography he wrote in collaboration with a few younger monks is one of the strangest texts in the history of Latin literature. In trying to analyse and interpret the work it may be helpful to use concepts taken from twentieth-century literary theory, as I hope to demonstrate

No full textLa historia como la literatura y el discurso etnológico e historiográfíco a base de modelos. No obstante su valor proto-etnográfico, hállanse en la Historia general elementos que permiten asociarla con la historiografía practicada desde la antigüedad bíblica. Los precortesianos agüeros indígenas que recoge, por ejemplo, evocan episodios del Nuevo y del Antiguo Testamento y de historiadores grecorromanos y medievales. Más sorprendentes, por del todo ignoradas, son las se mejanzas entre la Historia general y una biografía carolingia, el De Carolo Magno de Notker Balbulus (¿840?-912). Hay pasajes en la Historia general que acusan la huella de la obra germana en latín. Análogos son la finalidad, aspectos del argumento, la distribución de partes, la disposición narrativa, los recursos para dramatizarla, el elenco, los motivos y topoi utilizados; además, el despliegue retórico que alcanza hasta a pormenores de la sintaxis. Consideraciones en torno a la historiografía y a la filosofía de la historia sirven de trasfondo a este ensayo, que enfoca la equívoca invención literaria de las históricas raíces mexicanas en uno de sus documentos fundamentales del siglo XVI.
