On using gait to enhance frontal face extraction
Visual surveillance finds increasing deployment formonitoring urban environments. Operators need to be able to determine identity from surveillance images and often use face recognition for this purpose. In surveillance environments, it is necessary to handle pose variation of the human head, low frame rate, and low resolution input images. We describe the first use of gait to enable face acquisition and recognition, by analysis of 3-D head motion and gait trajectory, with super-resolution analysis. We use region- and distance-based refinement of head pose estimation. We develop a direct mapping to relate the 2-D image with a 3-D model. In gait trajectory analysis, we model the looming effect so as to obtain the correct face region. Based on head position and the gait trajectory, we can reconstruct high-quality frontal face images which are demonstrated to be suitable for face recognition. The contributions of this research include the construction of a 3-D model for pose estimation from planar imagery and the first use of gait information to enhance the face extraction process allowing for deployment in surveillance scenario
Performing content-based retrieval of humans using gait biometrics
In order to analyse surveillance video, we need to efficiently explore large datasets containing videos of walking humans. Effective analysis of such data relies on retrieval of video data which has been enriched using semantic annotations. A manual annotation process is time-consuming and prone to error due to subject bias however, at surveillance-image resolution, the human walk (their gait) can be analysed automatically. We explore the content-based retrieval of videos containing walking subjects, using semantic queries. We evaluate current research in gait biometrics, unique in its effectiveness at recognising people at a distance. We introduce a set of semantic traits discernible by humans at a distance, outlining their psychological validity. Working under the premise that similarity of the chosen gait signature implies similarity of certain semantic traits we perform a set of semantic retrieval experiments using popular Latent Semantic Analysis techniques. We perform experiments on a dataset of 2000 videos of people walking in laboratory conditions and achieve promising retrieval results for features such as Sex (mAP= 14% above random), Age (mAP=10% above random) and Ethnicity (mAP=9% above random
The 2D/3D dynamics of wall-bounded low-Rm magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence
With this experimental study, we give evidence that the dynamics of low-Rm MHD turbulence depends on the diffusion length l_z, which corresponds to the distance over which the Lorentz force is able to diffuse momentum before it is balanced by inertia

Performance Analysis for Automated Gait Extraction and Recognition in Multi-Camera Surveillance
Many studies have confirmed that gait analysis can be used as a new biometrics. In this research, gait analysis is deployed for people identification in multi-camera surveillance scenarios. We present a new method for viewpoint independent markerless gait analysis that does not require camera calibration and works with a wide range of walking directions. These properties make the proposed method particularly suitable for gait identification in real surveillance scenarios where people and their behaviour need to be tracked across a set of cameras. Tests on 300 synthetic and real video sequences, with subjects walking freely along different walking directions, have been performed. Since the choice of the cameras' characteristics is a key-point for the development of a smart surveillance system, the performance of the proposed approach is measured with respect to different video properties: spatial resolution, frame-rate, data compression and image quality. The obtained results show that markerless gait analysis can be achieved without any knowledge of camera's position and subject's pose. The extracted gait parameters allow recognition of people walking from different views with a mean recognition rate of 92.2% and confirm that gait can be effectively used for subjects' identification in a multi-camera surveillance scenario

Triangular Constellations in Flows
Particles advected on the surface of a fluid can exhibit fractal clustering. The local structure of a fractal set is described by its dimension , which is the exponent of a power-law relating the mass in a ball to its radius : . It is desirable to characterise the {\em shapes} of constellations of points sampling a fractal measure, as well as their masses. The simplest example is the distribution of shapes of triangles formed by triplets of points, which we investigate for fractals generated by chaotic dynamical systems. The most significant parameter describing the triangle shape is the ratio of its area to the radius of gyration squared. We show that the probability density of has a phase transition: is independent of and approximately uniform below a critical flow compressibility , which we estimate. For the distribution appears to be described by two power laws: when , and when
Exact two-dimensionalization of low-magnetic-Reynolds-number flows subject to a strong magnetic field
We investigate the behavior of flows, including turbulent flows, driven by a horizontal body-force and subject to a vertical magnetic field, with the following question in mind: for very strong applied magnetic field, is the flow mostly two-dimensional, with remaining weak three-dimensional fluctuations, or does it become exactly 2D, with no dependence along the vertical? We restrict attention to low-magnetic-Reynolds number (Rm) flow. Because liquid metals have low magnetic Prandtl number, such low- flows can have a kinetic Reynolds number as large as one million and therefore be strongly turbulent. We first focus on the quasi-static approximation, i.e. the asymptotic limit of vanishing magnetic Reynolds number Rm << 1: we prove that the flow becomes exactly 2D asymptotically in time, regardless of the initial condition and provided the interaction parameter N is larger than a threshold value. We call this property absolute two-dimensionalization: the attractor of the system is necessarily a (possibly turbulent) 2D flow. We then consider the full-magnetohydrodynamic equations and we prove that, for low enough Rm and large enough N, the flow becomes exactly two-dimensional in the long-time limit provided the initial vertically-dependent perturbations are infinitesimal. We call this phenomenon linear two-dimensionalization: the (possibly turbulent) 2D flow is an attractor of the dynamics, but it is not necessarily the only attractor of the system. Some 3D attractors may also exist and be attained for strong enough initial 3D perturbations. These results shed some light on the existence of a dissipative anomaly for magnetohydrodynamic flows subject to a strong external magnetic field
The Decay of Wall Bounded MHD Turbulence at Low RM
We have developed a new spectral method to simulate flows with very fine boundary layers present. We apply it to calculate the evolution of freely decaying MHD turbulence between isolating walls. By comparison them with results obtained in fully periodic domain we quantify the influence of the channel walls on the character of freely decaying MHD turbulence
