Empty verbs in Chinese predicatives and complex predicates
This paper investigates syntactic properties of verbless constructions in Chinese. Verbless constructions differ from constructions with overt verbs in three major respects. First, there is a VP-internal nominal raising in Chinese, which is optional if an overt verb shows up, and obligatory if there is no overt verb. Second, while an overt verb can select various kinds of argument, the internal argument of a verbless construction cannot be indefinite. Third, there are two types of object depictive secondary predication constructions, and only one of them allows for a null verb

Translation (Mike Tu Awng & Keita Kurabe) The story I will tell now is about "Nang Yut and the Wicked Ning Hpre Woman." A "Ning Hpre Woman" refers to a very violent and evil woman. "Nang Yut" refers to the youngest daughter. Long ago, in a village, there lived a wealthy chief. He married a woman named Nang Yut and they lived happily. They even had a daughter together. While they were living happily like this, one day, another village's chief came to marry his daughter off to this family. Because he brought his daughter to marry, the wealthy chief also married her. This woman had a bulging forehead and a bumpy face, she was not beautiful. She was also mean-spirited, so she was called the Ning Hpre Woman. On the other hand, Nang Yut was honest and, as the first wife, she lived as the lady of the house. The unattractive woman, wanting to take Nang Yut's position, constantly thought of killing Nang Yut. One day, after Nang Yut finished bathing, she was combing her hair with a golden comb on the floor. At that time, the Ning Hpre Woman came to Nang Yut and said, "Sister, let me comb your hair for you." Nang Yut said, "It's okay," "I can do it myself." But the Ning Hpre Woman insisted, "Let me comb your hair for you." So Nang Yut let her comb her hair. While combing her hair, the Ning Hpre Woman dropped the golden comb through a gap in the floor. "Sister, I dropped the comb through a gap in the floor." "The space under the floor is low," "and my back hurts." "Please go and fetch it," she said. Then Nang Yut said, "It's okay," "I have other combs." "We don't need to pick it up." But the Ning Hpre Woman kept insisting, "Please pick it up!" One day, the Ning Hpre Woman was weaving the cloth that Nang Yut had left unfinished. Then, Nang Yut said in a dove's voice, "Dut du duu du..." "You are only weaving what I left unfinished." Even when the Ning Hpre Woman wove patterns, "Dut du duu du..." "You are only weaving the patterns I taught you." When the dove said this, the Ning Hpre Woman heard it and thought, "Hmm, this must be Nang Yut." She then pretended to be ill. Pretending to be ill, she neither ate rice nor anything else, and just lay in bed. So the chief asked her, "What's wrong?" "What do you want to eat?" The Ning Hpre Woman said, "I want to eat dove meat," as she had planned. The chief called a servant who was good with a bow and had him shoot and kill the dove, which was Nang Yut, and cook it to feed the Ning Hpre Woman. When she was fed, the Ning Hpre Woman ate the dove meat and also tried to make Nang Yut's daughter drink the broth. However, Nang Yut's daughter, realizing that the dove was her mother, did not drink the broth and poured it on the ground. The story I will tell now is about "Nang Yut and the Wicked Ning Hpre Woman," Part Two. When Nang Yut's daughter poured the dove broth onto the ground, Nang Yut was reincarnated as a turtle and lived in a lake. She appeared in her daughter's dream and spoke to her. "My daughter, I have become a turtle and live in the lake." "So, come and take care of me." Therefore, every night, her daughter would sneak out from the house to the lake and throw food to the turtle. Nang Yut's daughter, who was previously always sad, became happy knowing that her mother had turned into a turtle, and she would visit her every night, returning home with a smile every night. When Ning Hpre found out about this, she thought, "Hmm, this girl is acting strange." "What could be going on?" She secretly had her children follow Nang Yut's daughter. They discovered that Nang Yut's daughter was feeding the turtle, her mother, every night. So, Ning Hpre plotted how to kill the turtle. She pretended to be sick once more and told the chief, "I will get better if I eat turtle meat." The chief ordered the servants to catch the turtle. Ning Hpre instructed the servants to go to the place where Nang Yut's daughter always went. However, Nang Yut's daughter found out about this and went early to her mother, saying,မိခင်ဆီ စောစောသွားပြီး "Mother, they are coming to catch you!" "Escape to the other side!" So, the servants couldn't catch the turtle. The next day, Ning Hpre said, "Go catch it over there!" but since Nang Yut's daughter warned her mother in advance, they couldn't catch it again. However, after fleeing every day like this, the turtle, Nang Yut, got very tired and told her daughter, "My daughter, I am tired of running away." "I am tired of living as a turtle." "So, let them catch me." The servants caught the turtle and cooked and ate it. Ning Hpre didn't give the turtle meat to Nang Yut's daughter, only the broth. However, she didn't drink it and poured it on the ground. Nang Yut's daughter was very sad. Ning Hpre was very happy that she could kill the turtle. While living like this, in a village not far from theirs, an old woman and her grandson lived. They would go to the fields every day, and when they returned at night, they found delicious food prepared and the house clean and tidy. They couldn't find out who was doing this for them, no matter how much they searched the house. Since this happened every day, one day, they pretended to go to the fields and hid in a corner of the yard to watch. Then, they saw a woman come out of a gourd placed in a corner of the house, cook delicious food, and clean the house. Upon discovering this, the grandson went straight into the house and smashed the gourd in the corner. The woman couldn't return to the gourd and became human. At that moment, the grandson asked the woman, "Who are you?" The woman explained that she was Nang Yut, the chief's wife from a village not far from theirs, and told them everything that had happened so far. Finally, she told them that she was reincarnated in the gourd from the turtle broth poured on the ground by her daughter and that she could come out if they accepted her. The old woman, feeling sorry after hearing Nang Yut's story, sent Nang Yut back to her original village. At that time, Ning Hpre was greatly surprised. The chief, knowing everything that had happened, said, "Only one of you two can live here." "Otherwise, unfortunate things like this will happen again." "I will take only one as my wife." Then, Ning Hpre, wanting to kill Nang Yut, suggested, "Let's fight." "Let's duel with swords." Even though Nang Yut said, "There is no need to fight." "Both of us can live here," Ning Hpre kept insisting on dueling with swords. So, the chief had a very sharp iron sword made for Nang Yut. For Ning Hpre, he had a sword made of lead. At that moment, Ning Hpre found the lead sword too heavy, her heart pounded in shock, and before the duel began, she collapsed and died. Thus, Nang Yut and her daughter lived happily ever after.
