Preliminary Investigation Into The Benefits From Investments In Environmental Research: Case Studies on Water Clarity/Quality and The Biological Management of Possums
MoRST is performing an evaluation of the funds invested in environmental research. The two case studies discussed in this paper contribute to the ongoing decision-making about this investment. Substantial funds have been invested in both research programmes identified. Because the main benefits associated with research output are environmental, they are difficult to value monetarily. Preliminary analysis suggests that at a discount rate of 6%, annual future benefit flows of 10 million will justify the water quality/clarity research. The construction of Karen Karnak: The multi-author-function
This thesis is situated within the comparatively recent developments of Web 2.0 and the emergence of interactive WikiMedia, and explores the mode of authorship within a Read/Write culture compared to that of a Read/Only tradition. The hypothesis of this study is that the role of the audience has become merged with the author, and as such, represents new functions and attributes, distinct from a more conventional concept of authorship, in which the roles of audience and author are more separate. Read/Write and participatory culture, as defined by this study, is focused on collaboration, and includes the influences of D.I.Y. culture, Open-Source practices and the production of text by multiple authors. Multi-authorship presents a re-thinking of several concepts which support the notion of the individual author, since the focus of multi-authorship is not on attribution and ownership of a finished text, but on the continued malleability of a text. Modes of multi-authorship, demonstrated in the use of the pseudonyms Alan Smithee and Karen Eliot, represent declarative authors whose names signify multiple origins, whilst concurrently indicating a distinct body of work. The function of these names form an important context to this study, since primary research involves the construction of an experimental mode of multi-authorship utilising WikiMedia technology and the interaction of thirty nine participants, who are invited to create a body of work under the collective pseudonym Karen Karnak. The data generated by this experiment is analysed using aspects of Michel Foucault's author-function to identify and determine power structures inherent in the WikiMedia context. The interplay of power structures, including concepts such as identity, ownership and the body of work, affect the resulting mode of authorship and contribute to the construction of Karen Karnak, suggesting further areas of research into the emerging multi-author
Bio-sensing textile based patch with integrated optical detection system for sweat monitoring
Sensors, which can be integrated into clothing and used to measure biochemical changes in body fluids,
such as sweat, constitute a major advancement in the area of wearable sensors. Initial applications for
such technology exist in personal health and sports performance monitoring. However, sample collection
is a complicated matter as analysis must be done in real-time in order to obtain a useful examination
of its composition. This work outlines the development of a textile-based fluid handling platform which
uses a passive pump to gather sweat and move it through a pre-defined channel for analysis. The system
is tested both in vitro and in vivo. In addition, a pH sensor, which depends on the use of a pH sensitive dye
and paired emitter-detector LEDs to measure colour changes, has been developed. In vitro and on-body
trials have shown that the sensor has the potential to record real-time variations in sweat during exercise
Spectral properties of Andreev reflection from quantum turbulence in 3He-B: What do they tell about turbulent fluctuations?
One of the experimental techniques developed to measure quantum turbulence at low temperatures in 3He-B utilizes the Andreev reflection of thermal quasiparticle excitations from quantized vortices and vortex structures. We present the results of theoretical, numerical, and experimental study of Andreev scattering from quantum turbulence in 3He-B. We analyze the spectral properties of the Andreev reflection and compare these with the spectral properties of superfluid turbulence, and discuss the physical mechanisms responsible for the scaling of spectral densities. Finally, we discuss the relation between our findings and related observables in ordinary turbulence
USA300 abroad: global spread of a virulent strain of community-associated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus
AbstractThe epidemic of USA300-0114 methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in the USA has been remarkable for its virulence and for its ability to cause infections in both the community and healthcare settings. Although it has mainly been associated with skin and soft tissue infections, particularly furunculosis, it has also caused severe life-threatening conditions such as necrotizing pneumonia, osteomyelitis, and septic arthritis. This strain or a closely related Latin American variant has now spread to multiple countries on five continents, where associated clinical and epidemiological features have been in keeping with those seen in the USA. Furthermore, it has become the dominant community-associated MRSA strain in five countries. It is now a major international epidemic strain, but whether it will supplant established community-associated strains in other countries remains to be seen
Community-associated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in Australia
A series of epidemics of community-associated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (CA-MRSA) have occurred in Australia, starting in Western Australia in the early 1990s, in the Northern Territory soon thereafter and in eastern states in the mid 1990s. The Western Australian epidemic has been due mainly to Panton-Valentine leukocidin (PVL)-negative clones, whilst PVL-positive clones have predominated in the east. More recently, the major epidemic clones have spread throughout the country, whilst multiple new minor clones have emerged, mainly in Western Australia. A total of 45 clones of CA-MRSA have been detected in Australia to date: 30 of these carry SCCmec IV, 6 carry SCCmec V and 9 carry novel SCCmec types. Overall, CA-MRSA clones have been associated predominantly with skin and soft-tissue infections. PVL-positive clones have been associated with furunculosis, necrotising pneumonia and osteomyelitis and have caused fatalities in otherwise healthy children and young adults. Initial treatment of these infections remains problematic, as it is frequently inappropriate. Of particular concern, healthcare-associated acquisition of CA-MRSA clones is now increasing, although major hospital outbreaks have not occurred yet
