    No full text
Two Serbian texts extol the contribution of Dimitrios Tsamis Karatasos to the Balkan joint effort to throw off the Ottoman yoke. These texts are analysed by the author within the historical framework of their period, so that the man’s personality and work may be accurately evaluated from a fresh viewpoint. More specifically, the author conducts a research on the tombstone of Dimitrios Tsamis Karatasos, which he discovered himself at Naoussa, and the octet engraved on it, which is also published here. The work is illustrated by seven plates, of which four have not been published previously

Encomium to the Monastic Life: An Unedited Poem of Alexios Makrembolites

    No full text
This article presents the first critical edition of a metrical Encomium to the monastic life written by the fourteenth-century Byzantine author Alexios Makrembolites. The text is preserved in only one manuscript (Hierosolymitanus Sabbaiticus gr. 417). Makrembolites, after referring to the constant rejuvenation of the nature, wonders why people are drawn towards material goods and not to spiritual ones, distancing themselves from the immortality offered by a life close to God. After apologizing for his sinful life, he praises monastic life which he believes he should follow in order to bring an end to all his pains.

The Exemplary Life of Dimitrios Vikelas (1835-1908)

    No full text
This paper describes the "satisfying curve" of Dimitrios Vikelas' life journey, starting from Syros in 1835, moving via Constantinople, Odessa, and Syros again, to London, Paris and finally Athens. It explores Vikelas' multiple aspects, as merchant, writer, traveller, lecturer and essayist, Olympic founder, educationalist, book collector and philanthropist, all of which were united in the public-spirited man of letters (logios). It sets Vikelas in the context of the Greek commercial diaspora, the world of the London expatriate Greek community, and the dynamic society of late nineteenth-century Athens, beginning in the 1870s to act as a magnet to Greek expatriates. The author stresses two qualities of Vikelas: his belief in the idea of a progressive Greek state marked by advances in education, culture, tourism and standards of public life; and the self-awareness and experience which inform his autobiographical writings, not only his memoir My Life but also his last such work, The War of 1897

The Historical Work of Doukas: Sources and Influenses

    No full text
The purpose of this work is to examine systematically the sources of the History of Doukas and his influences on the historical works of his contemporary authors. The comparison of the Doukas’ History with other historical works that narrate the same historical events, allow us to sum up the following conclusions. Doukas had obviously read and used the Roman History of Nikephoros Gregoras (for the facts until the 1354), as well as the Chronicle of John Anagnostes (about the fall of Thessalonica in 1430). The examination of the historical works of Laonikos Chalkokondyles, George Sphrantzes and Michael Critoboulos has shown that there are no interactions between those and the History of Doukas

    Historical orations in byzantine literature

    No full text
The purpose of this doctoral thesis: «“Historical Orations” in Byzantine Literature» is to study a specific kind of orations that do not belong to a particular literary group. These orations had been written on the occasion of a specific and recent historical event of internal or external policy of the Byzantine Empire and usually for public reading. We can call these orations as “historical orations”. Thus, in the first part of the work, we identify the common features of “historical orations”, and then we analyze the way in which we study these twenty eight orations. In the second part of this study we examine in detail the specific “historical oration”. At first we present the life and work elements of each author of “historical oration” and we attempt to deal with various problems relating in some cases even the authorship of the oration itself. After that, we present the manuscripts that include these orations, the publications and each oration’s exact title. Moreover, is presented the historical context, because of the masking effort of historical reality with persons or events from classic antiquity or Bible. At last, is attempted the date of each “historical oration”, the place searched, and the exact time of the pronunciation. At last, we present the basic characteristics of the “historical orations”, as far as some observations upon the orations’ structure and the motifs, as derived from the analytical examination of these orations. Moreover, we identify each oration’s rhetorical structure and narrative techniques, as far as the rhetorical style and the language.Η παρούσα εργασία με τίτλο: «Οι "ιστορικοί λόγοι" στη βυζαντινή λογοτεχνία», επιχειρεί να συμβάλλει στη μελέτη μιας ιδιαίτερης κατηγορίας λόγων, οι οποίοι δεν ακολουθούν κάποιο από τα καθιερωμένα ρητορικά είδη της βυζαντινής γραμματείας.
