Common Parietal Activation in Musical Mental Transformations Across Pitch and Time
We previously observed that mental manipulation of the pitch level or temporal organization of melodies results in functional activation in the human intraparietal sulcus (IPS), a region also associated with visuospatial transformation and numerical calculation. Two outstanding questions about these musical transformations are whether pitch and time depend on separate or common processing in IPS, and whether IPS recruitment in melodic tasks varies depending upon the degree of transformation required (as it does in mental rotation). In the present study we sought to answer these questions by applying functional magnetic resonance imaging while musicians performed closely matched mental transposition (pitch transformation) and melody reversal (temporal transformation) tasks. A voxel-wise conjunction analysis showed that in individual subjects, both tasks activated overlapping regions in bilateral IPS, suggesting that a common neural substrate subserves both types of mental transformation. Varying the magnitude of mental pitch transposition resulted in variation of IPS BOLD signal in correlation with the musical key-distance of the transposition, but not with the pitch distance, indicating that the cognitive metric relevant for this type of operation is an abstract one, well described by music-theoretic concepts. These findings support a general role for the IPS in systematically transforming auditory stimulus representations in a nonspatial context. (C) 2013 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved
Auditory‐musical processing in autism spectrum disorders: a review of behavioral and brain imaging studies
Imaging Brain Development: Benefiting from Individual Variability
Human brain development is a complex process that evolves from early childhood to young adulthood. Major advances in brain imaging are increasingly being used to characterize the developing brain. These advances have further helped to elucidate the dynamic maturational processes that lead to the emergence of complex cognitive abilities in both typical and atypical development. However, conventional approaches involve categorical group comparison models and tend to disregard the role of widespread interindividual variability in brain development. This review highlights how this variability can inform our understanding of developmental processes. The latest studies in the field of brain development are reviewed, with a particular focus on the role of individual variability and the consequent heterogeneity in brain structural and functional development. This review also highlights how such heterogeneity might be utilized to inform our understanding of complex neuropsychiatric disorders and recommends the use of more dimensional approaches to study brain development

Мир детства и его художественное воплощение в романе З. Прилепина "Патологии"
The article deals with the evocation of childhood in the novel by Zahar Prilepin “Pathologies”. Children’s images are very important for all Prilepin’s works, in his first novel about warfare the author starts the theme of childhood, which is philosophical as well as psychological. In “Pathologies” we can see the world of childhood and imagination contrasted with the world of war and terror. The force of memory makes it possible to bring back events and situations which seemed to be buried in the past. With the help of memory Prilepin’s characters return to the first years of their lives trying to find safety and freedom. Almost all of these characters have some qualities, more typical for children, not for adults. For example, the hero of “Pathologies”, Egor Tachevsky has rich imagination and sincerity of a child, but on the other hand he is somewhat infantile and egoistic. On the whole, the importance of childhood in the life of every person is constantly marked by the writer. The conception of childhood in Prilepin’s works means not only the concrete period of time or some growing up people. It is also the symbol of tomorrow, the sign of future. This meaning is revealed in the first scene of “Pathologies”, where the main character of the book saves his foster-son from death.
RAISING ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS OF STUDENTS THROUG RESEARCH ACTIVITIES AT THE UNVIERSITY MUSEUM
The article looks at raising environmental awareness of students in the course of research performed at the university museum. The author assumes that environmental museum of a university can become the space for innovation and exploration that could raise environmental awareness of students. In order to ensure proper pedagogical conditions there was elaborated a concept of raising environmental awareness of students with the help of a university museum. The article follows the main stages of creation of the exposition by the students, which was devoted to the 5th year of environmental disaster, which was the result of a series of shipwrecks on the ‘black Sunday’ of 11 November, 2007 in the Kerch Strait. The author assumes that the exposition is essential to shed light on real events, present them more vividly, follow the history of certain exhibits and emphasize the unbearable living conditions for the birds dying in the oil slick. The exposition unveils core problems of oil contamination of the world ocean. The exhibits prove the actual fact and foster deeper understanding of the situation. They help to picture the tragic events of the black Sunday more vividly and evoke feelings and emotions, which make the students their witnesses and participants. The author follows the process of raising environmental awareness of students and looks at the results before and after their involvement in research at the environmental museum with the help of the method by E.V. Asafova and concludes that engaging students in research through creating ecological exposition can considerably raise their environmental awareness.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.12731/2218-7405-2013-8-24</p
