Clear and Present Democratic Dangers: Don't Touch My Junk
Gene R. Nichol explores how populist outrage and anti-government sentiment threaten constitutional norms and democratic institutions. Using the public backlash against TSA security procedures as a case study, Nichol illustrates how personal grievance can be exploited to fuel broader attacks on governmental authority. He critiques the selective nature of civil liberties advocacy that ignores systemic injustices while fixating on individual inconvenience. The article warns that such distorted priorities can erode meaningful constitutional discourse. Ultimately, Nichol calls for a more principled and inclusive defense of constitutional rights that addresses real threats to democracy
