K-U-L-T-U-R-A sa Gitna ng Suliranin ng Lupang Tirahan ng Pamayanang Ayta ng Putingkahoy, Rosario, Batangas
Suliranin sa lupa ang isa sa pinakamabigat na hamon ng mga pamayanang Ayta sa bansa, ngunit nanatiling limitado ang mga pag-aaral hinggil sa kanilang paninirahan sa labas ng lupang ninuno. Tinugunan ng papel ang puwang na ito sa pamamagitan ng pagsusuri sa karanasan ng pamayanang Ayta sa Putingkahoy, Rosario, Batangas bilang indigenous peoples outside ancestral domain. Ginamit sa pag-aaral ang modelong mnemonic na K-U-L-T-U-R-A at disenyong etnograpiya na nakabatay sa partisipasyon ng pamayanan upang masuri ang kamalayan, saloobin, pag-uugali, reaksyon, at pagkilos ng mga Ayta sa kanilang suliranin sa lupang tirahan. Natuklasan na ang paninirahan sa labas ng lupang ninuno ay lalo pang nagpalala sa kakulangan sa edukasyon, kawalan ng permanenteng kabuhayan, malnutrisyon, kakulangan ng representasyon sa barangay, at mas mataas na bulnerabilidad sa kalamidad. Lumitaw rin ang kultura ng tahimik na paghihintay at mahinahong pakikipag-ugnayan, kung saan ipinauubaya sa chieftain ang pakikipag-usap sa mga opisyal ng barangay. Sa kabila nito, natukoy ang kontra-diskursong nagpakitang may pangarap ang mga Ayta na makapagtapos ng pag-aaral at may bukas silang pagtanggap sa mga mananaliksik at community partners. Gayunman, nanatiling hamon ang usapin ng free, prior, and informed consent at etika sa mga programang isinagawa kasama ang mga katutubo. Ipinakita rin ng papel ang aktibong partisipasyon ng kabataang Ayta sa pagpapasigla ng katutubong kaalaman at ang panawagang mas malinaw na maipaliwanag ang Indigenous Peoples’ Rights Act (IPRA) upang maprotektahan at mapalakas ang tinig ng mga Ayta sa labas ng lupang ninuno
On the performance and complexity of irregular variable length codes for near-capacity joint source and channel coding
In this paper we propose a novel Irregular Variable Length Coding (IrVLC) scheme for near-capacity joint source and channel coding. We employ a number of component Variable Length Coding (VLC) codebooks having different coding rates for encoding particular fractions of the input source symbol stream. These fractions may be chosen with the aid of EXtrinsic Information Transfer (EXIT) charts in order to shape the inverted EXIT curve of the IrVLC codec for ensuring that it does not cross the EXIT curve of a serially concatenated channel codec. In this way, an open EXIT chart tunnel may be created even at low SNR values that are close to the capacity bound of the channel. We propose iteratively decoded serially concatenated IrVLC designs amalgamated with Trellis Coded Modulation (TCM). These schemes are shown to be capable of operating within 0.6 dB of the uncorrelated narrowband Rayleigh fading channel's capacity bound using an average interleaver length of 217,500 bits and an effective bandwidth efficiency of 1.56 bit/s/Hz, assuming ideal Nyquist filtering. By contrast, the equivalent-rate regular VLC-based bench-marker schemes were found to be capable of operating at a higher distance of 1.1 dB from the capacity bound, which is nearly twice that of the proposed IrVLC-TCM scheme. Carapace wide, trapezoidal, margins cristate, but not continuous to external orbital end, epimeral suture just inferior to carapace proper; surface smooth, glabrous. Front narrow, deflexed medially, triangular in frontal view. Orbit oblique, mesial part of supraorbital margin placed more posteriorly than external orbital end; orbital margins entire, outer part granulated, infraorbital margin mesially terminating in sharp tooth; supraorbital margin demarcated from antennular fossa by obtuse angle; supraorbital margin demarcated from antennular fossa by acute tooth; infraorbital and supraorbital margins not continuing laterally beyond orbit proper. Eyes short, mobile, fully occupying orbit. Epistome short, medially sunken. Maxilliped 3 covering about 4 / 5 of buccal cavern. Thoracic sternites 1 and 2 completely fused, sternite 1 tooth-like, directed dorsally at proximal end of buccal cavern; sternites 2 and 3 demarcated by deep groove; sternites 3 and 4 fused, lateral parts marked by very shallow depressions and pits; sternites 4–8 demarcated by narrow lateral grooves at outside of sternal cavity, grooves ending at lateral parts of sternal cavity; sternal cavity depressed medially, no clear longitudinal groove. Cheliped merus with large transverse and triangular lobe on subdistal part of dorsal margin. P 2–4 similar in shape, P 3 longest; meri about 3 times as long as high, about 1.5 times length of propodus and carpus length combined; carpus longer than propodus. P 5 merus slightly longer than carpus and propodus combined, about twice as long as high, just reaching proximal half of P 4 merus; distal end of ischium and proximal end of merus each with single sharp tooth on flexor margin. P 2–5 all with single pair of short, sharp claw on distoflexor angle of propodi; dactyli very short, claw-like. Male abdomen with all somites freely articulating, first somite widest. Thoracic sternite 8 exposed when abdomen closed, somite 3 to telson forming triangular outline. G 1 straight, slender, distally tapering incurved. G 2 small, about ¼ length of G 1. Included species. Near-capacity code design for entanglement-assisted classical communication over quantum depolarizing channels
We have conceived a near-capacity code design for entanglement-assisted classical communication over the quantum depolarizing channel. The proposed system relies on efficient near-capacity classical code designs for approaching the entanglement-assisted classical capacity of a quantum depolarizing channel. It incorporates an Irregular Convolutional Code (IRCC), a Unity Rate Code (URC) and a soft-decision aided Superdense Code (SD), which is hence referred to as an IRCC-URC-SD arrangement. Furthermore, the entanglement-assisted classical capacity of an N-qubit superdense code transmitted over a depolarizing channel is invoked for benchmarking. It is demonstrated that the proposed system operates within 0.4 dB of the achievable noise limit for both 2-qubit as well as 3-qubit SD schemes. More specifically, our design exhibits a deviation of only 0.062 and 0.031 classical bits per channel use from the corresponding 2-qubit and 3-qubit capacity limits, respectively. Determination of L-arginine and NG,NG- and NG,NG'-dimethyl-L-arginine in plasma by liquid chromatography as AccQ-FluorTM fluorescent derivatives

All rights reserved.A new HPLC assay for the detection of L-arginine, NG, NG-dimethyl-L-arginine (ADMA) and NG, NG' -dimethyl-L-arginine (SDMA) in plasma using the derivatisation reagent AccQ-Fluor (6-aminoquinolyl-N-hydroxysuccinimidyl carbamate) is described. The fluorescent derivatives produced are extremely stable enabling routine processing of large numbers of samples. Arginine and its metabolites are extracted from plasma on strong cation exchange (SCX) cartridges with NG-monomethyl-L-arginine (NMMA) as internal standard, derivatised and separated on a C18 column with acetonitrile in 0.1M sodium acetate buffer pH 6. Separation of the stereoisomers ADMA and SDMA was excellent and improvements to the solid phase extraction (SPE) procedure enabled good recovery (>80%) of arginine, ADMA and SDMA. The utility of the method is exemplified by comparison of plasma concentrations of ADMA, SDMA and arginine in healthy volunteers and diabetic/ischaemic patients.Tamila Heresztyn, Matthew I.
