Auswirkungen der Hörgeräteauswahl und Hörgeräteeinstellung auf die Qualität des Musikhörens
The main aim of the study was to explore which type of hearing aid respectively which hearing aid setting allows for listening to music with the most satisfactory result for hearing aid wearers suffering from high-frequency hearing loss. 14 subjects were included on the basis of the degree of their hearing loss which was low-grade or close to deafness in the high-frequency range, whereas it was not exceeding moderate severity in the low-frequency range. Each hearing curve was sloping down from the medium towards the high frequencies. The hearing curves of the right and left ear were approximately symmetrical for each subject. Further entry criteria were bilateral hearing aids either as behind-the-ear (BTE) aids or receiver-in-canal (RIC) aids. The first fitting with a hearing aid had been made within three years before trial performance for each of the fourteen subjects. A fifteenth subject’s first fitting had been longer than three years ago wherefore her data were treated in a case study. Depending on the patient’s own hearing system’s performance level, one of three preselected hearing systems was assigned to each patient. Those hearing systems were of low (model “Q15”), middle (“V50”) or high (“V90”) functional feature configuration. Both a nonspecific (“first fit”) hearing aid setting and one meant for listening to music (“music program”) were tested. Of the three performed tests, one aimed at exploring differences in reproduction and perception of music in a mainly low vs. a mainly high frequency range (1). Another test explored reproduction and perception of music by four different instrument families (2). Performing a mixed ANOVA, data in tests (1) and (2) were analyzed separately for each of the six sound attributes inquired in the questionnaires. Furthermore, the recognizability of seven musical instruments’ sounds was explored (3). Independent variables frequency (1) and instrument family (2) turned out to be the only significant main effects, the woodwind stimulus nearly consistently rated with most negative characteristics. In Q15 model, the music program promoted more favourable sound characteristics than the first fit. Concerning true-to-life reproduction of timbre, model V50 proved to be most beneficious, followed by V90 and finally Q15. Alltogether, hearing systems V50 and V90 were advantageous to Q15, especially in terms of wiry and acute qualities of sound
