A comparison of the Nernst-Planck and Maxwell-Stefan approaches to modelling multicomponent charge transport in electrolyte solutions

    No full text
An understanding of charge transport in electrolytic solutions is of vital importance in the modelling and simulation of electrochemically and photoelectrochemically active porous media. To this end, we present two multicomponent charge transport models for an electrolyte system based on the generalized Maxwell-Stefan equations and the dilute solution Nernst-Planck equations. These transport models are used to develop two further models of a simple electrochemical cell consisting of ideally polarizable metal electrodes and a binary electrolyte. The results from the numerical solution of these Maxwell-Stefan and Nernst-Planck models are compared for a range of electrolyte concentrations and the applicability of each model approach is discussed

Comparing charge transport predictions for a ternary\ud electrolyte using the Maxwell–Stefan and Nernst–Planck\ud equations

    No full text
In this work, we investigate and compare the Maxwell–Stefan and Nernst–Planck equations for modeling multicomponent charge transport in liquid electrolytes. Specifically, we consider charge transport in the Li+/I−/I3−/ACN ternary electrolyte originally found in dye-sensitized solar cells. We employ molecular dynamics simulations to obtain the Maxwell–Stefan diffusivities for this electrolyte. These simulated diffusion coefficients are used in a multicomponent charge transport model based on the Maxwell–\ud Stefan equations, and this is compared to a Nernst–Planck based model which employs binary diffusion coefficients sourced from the literature. We show that significant differences between the electrolyte concentrations at electrode interfaces, as predicted by the Maxwell–Stefan and Nernst–Planck models, can occur. We find that these differences are driven by a pressure term that appears in the Maxwell–Stefan equations. We also investigate what effects the Maxwell–Stefan diffusivities have on the simulated charge transport. By incorporating binary diffusivities found in the literature into the Maxwell–Stefan framework, we show that the simulated transient concentration profiles depend on the diffusivities; however, the simulated equilibrium profiles remain unaffected

On the Boundedness of the Dimensionless Index of Performance of a Nernst Effect Generator

    No full text
The author, in an earlier paper, analyzed a Nernst effect generator by the usual thermodynamic methods and found that a bound of unity arises on the dimensionless quantity θT where θ is given as the square of the product of the Nernst coefficient and magnetic field divided by the thermal conductivity and electrical resistivity. By application of the appropriate equations of semiconductor theory this bound is shown to be justified for four limiting cases: Weak magnetic fields considering both extrinsic and intrinsic materials, and strong magnetic fields considering both extrinsic and intrinsic materials.</jats:p

Nernst-Ettingshausen effect in thin Pt and W films at low temperatures

    No full text
As spin caloritronic measurements become increasingly common techniques for characterizing material properties, it is important to quantify potentially confounding effects. We report measurements of the Nernst-Ettingshausen response from room temperature to 5 K in thin film wires of Pt and W, metals commonly used as inverse spin Hall detectors in spin Seebeck characterization. Johnson-Nyquist noise thermometry is used to assess the temperature change of the metals with heater power at low temperatures, and the thermal path is analyzed via finite-element modeling. The Nernst-Ettingshausen response of W is found to be approximately temperature-independent, while the response of Pt increases at low temperatures. These results are discussed in the context of theoretical expectations and the possible role of magnetic impurities in Pt.Comment: 14 pages, 3 figures + supplementary material of 12 pages and 5 figure

Nowe spojrzenie na planowanie architektury mieszkaniowej w afryce subsaharyjskiej

The author shares his reflections on state of art in housing and urban planning, deficiencies, expectations and possibilities in the Sahel region of Africa. He notices, that the housing problem in Africa is one of the challenges, which should be solved in order to recover life dignity of African people and secure their rights to traditional family life in acceptable conditions. The paper describes the studies on the typical dispersed urban structures and the need to foster this type of settlement structure and proposals of introduction of new on light steel frame housing system in the area of Sahel, combining the traditional way of building houses with modern technology. The particularly analysed case, is the housing problem in the Republic of Chad. The author presents the basic discussion on this topic and his architectural proposals. Unfortunately, the gap between the needs and the financial feasibility of housing construction in this area, makes this project already at the starting point extremely difficult to be realized without external subventions.
