Activismo epistémico y la epistemología del empoderamiento
Epistemic Activism and the Epistemology of Empowerment
Abstract: This article argues that Fernando Broncano’s theory of shared epistemic agency calls for an analysis of how to share resistant epistemic agency in order to understand how to fight against agential epistemic harms in communities of resistance and through what the author terms epistemic activism. The author maintains that Broncano’s epistemology of dependence needs to be supplemented with an epistemology of activism and empowerment that shows how agential epistemic harms can be repaired, how structural and institutional obstacles that constrain the epistemic agency of oppressed groups can be dismantled, and how the epistemic agency of marginalized groups can be restored through the epistemic self-empowerment of those groups.

We studied the transmission of norovirus infection in households in Quininde, Ecuador. Among household contacts of norovirus positive children with diarrhea, norovirus negative children with diarrhea and asymptomatic controls, infection attack rates were 33%, 8% and 18%, respectively (N = 45, 36, 83). Infection attack rates were higher when index children had a higher viral load.088862/Z/09/Z/WT_/Wellcome TrustUnited Kingdom/100714/WT_/Wellcome TrustUnited Kingdom/088862/WT_/Wellcome TrustUnited Kingdom/CC999999/ImCDC/Intramural CDC HHSUnited States/WT_/Wellcome TrustUnited Kingdom

BackgroundWe studied the transmission of rotavirus infection in households in peri-urban Ecuador in the vaccination era.MethodsStool samples were collected from household contacts of child rotavirus cases, diarrhea controls and healthy controls following presentation of the index child to health facilities. Rotavirus infection status of contacts was determined by RT-qPCR. We examined factors associated with transmissibility (index-case characteristics) and susceptibility (household-contact characteristics).ResultsAmongst cases, diarrhea controls and healthy control household contacts, infection attack rates (iAR) were 55%, 8% and 2%, (n\ue2€\u160=\ue2€ᘁ37, 130, 137) respectively. iARs were higher from index cases with vomiting, and amongst siblings. Disease ARs were higher when the index child was <18 months and had vomiting, with household contact <10 years and those sharing a room with the index case being more susceptible. We found no evidence of asymptomatic infections leading to disease transmission.ConclusionTransmission rates of rotavirus are high in households with an infected child, while background infections are rare. We have identified factors associated with transmission (vomiting/young age of index case) and susceptibility (young age/sharing a room/being a sibling of the index case). Vaccination may lead to indirect benefits by averting episodes or reducing symptoms in vaccinees

Although norovirus is the most common cause of gastroenteritis, there are few data on the community incidence of infection/disease or the patterns of acquired immunity or innate resistance to norovirus.|We followed a community-based birth cohort of 194 children in Ecuador with the aim to estimate (1) the incidence of norovirus gastroenteritis from birth to age 3 years, (2) the protective effect of norovirus infection against subsequent infection/disease, and (3) the association of infection and disease with FUT2 secretor status.|Over the 3-year period, we detected a mean of 2.26 diarrheal episodes per child (range, 0-12 episodes). Norovirus was detected in 260 samples (18%) but was not found more frequently in diarrheal samples (79 of 438 [18%]), compared with diarrhea-free samples (181 of 1016 [18%]; P = .919). A total of 66% of children had at least 1 norovirus infection during the first 3 years of life, and 40% of children had 2 infections. Previous norovirus infections were not associated with the risk of subsequent infection. All genogroup II, genotype 4 (GII.4) infections were among secretor-positive children (P < .001), but higher rates of non-GII.4 infections were found in secretor-negative children (relative risk, 0.56; P = .029).|GII.4 infections were uniquely detected in secretor-positive children, while non-GII.4 infections were more often found in secretor-negative children.20142014-12-10T00:00:00Z100714/Wellcome Trust/United Kingdom940
Having worked with students studying Japanese as a Japanese language teacher for many years, the author was intrigued by how their thinking and behaviour changed the more they learned about Japanese language and culture, and the more influential they became in the use of Japanese in their lives. To better understand this, the author interviewed five Spaniards who had studied Japanese for a long time and lived in Japan to recount their relationship with Japan. The aim of this study was to analyse the impact of learning a second language and culture, in this case Japanese language and culture, on the identity of individual learners.
According to Anthony Pym's theory in Exploring Translation Theories (2014), "mediation" and "translation without translations" are synonymous, and the results from the analysis of the interviews proved this claim. Furthermore, from the interviews the key word katachi (form) emerged as a symbol of the Japanese language and Japanese society. In other words, it became clear that, through their diverse experiences in Japan, a country with a language and way of life completely different from Spain, these interview subjects see Japan in their own way whilst incorporating Japanese language and culture into their own identities through "translation without translation". There were not only aspirations, affection and hopes, but also bitter experiences of rejection, disappointment, and self-doubt, sometimes in the form of intercultural conflict. Despite that, all five interview subjects overcame these successfully by assuming their role as mediators between the two countries and continue to work as mediators in their respective current jobs. It also became clear that the katachi (form) they sought for themselves in Japan had an impact on their identities and continues to flow at the root of their own thinking now that they have returned to Spain.

In the feld of History of Literature the possibility of developing fctitious avatars in social networks allows anyone to play with canonical authors’ identity, biographical data and textual works. Such virtual identities already exist in many current social networks—and are used for and addressed towards a diversity of goals by their creators (both individual and corporate ones). Twitter, as an open feld to the culture of a freely-chosen avatar, collects voices which refect the historical character of an author based on the ofcial culture we inherited from and author or, at the same time, shows voices loosely based on particular traits of an author to create derivative characters. Therefore, we can fnd multiple different —even opposite— identities associated to one single name, who is reinterpreted by his virtual counterparts in a series of rewritings and appropriations, from simulation to imposture. Furthermore, the use of hashtags named as authors’ names as a way to generate real time publications based on a particular author’s related content brings the social network’s algorithm to be considered as a cyborg-publisher driven by an artifcial intelligence empowered by human provided content. Around this game of appropriations, several questions arise: Who are behind those identities and what kind of users create them? What are the goals of these embodied appropriations and how does this activity affects the canonical identity of an author and its traditional spaces of dissemination? I will analyse the example of the multiple avatars of national Spanish writer Miguel de Cervantes under a rich theoretical framework based on the concepts elaborated by Daniel Escandell on how avatars work, by Katherine Hayles on the post-humanist landscape, by Vicente Luis Mora on the reader as spectator, by Espen Aarseth on cybertext, by Joseph Grigely on textualterity, and by Fernando Broncano on the concept of cyborg
