THE AUTHOR IN THE TEXT: THE PERSONAL AND THE THEORETICAL IN THE WORK OF CLAIRE-LOUISE BENNETT, DIONNE BRAND, AND MAGGIE NELSON

    No full text
This thesis contributes to conversations about authorship from a feminist point of view, mainly, where autotheory is concerned. Autotheory is a capacious, feminist experimental praxis that focuses on the interplay between the personal and the theoretical that has long been a hallmark of theorising by women and otherwise marginalised authors, including those who are LGBTQ+ and/or of colour. To consider the relation between the personal and theoretical in autotheory, this thesis focuses on the figure of the author as she appears in recent texts by Claire-Louise Bennett, Dionne Brand, and Maggie Nelson. This thesis contends that the writers that I have chosen as case studies experiment with life-writing for the purposes of theorising authorship. In doing so, it argues that the figure of the author in the text engages in a critical, politically informed resistance to the dismissal of the author. As such, it enables theorisations about the significance of authorship from within. Specifically, Bennett’s Pond (2015) and Checkout 19 (2021) attest to literature’s capacity to theorise through anecdotal theory; Brand’s Theory (2018) and The Blue Clerk (2018) think about authorship and representation in relation to members of marginalised communities, and Nelson’s The Argonauts (2015) and Bluets (2009) call into question the fiction of individual authorship in Nelson’s own citational practice. The author in the text is a concept informed by the Barthesian authorial figure of his late work, which, I argue, is characterised by experimenting with the personal and the theoretical in conversation with others

Business cycles and remittances: can the Beveridge-Nelson decomposition provide new evidence?

    No full text
In this paper, I analyze the business cycle properties of remittances and output series for three pairs of countries: United States-Mexico, United States-El Salvador, and Germany-Turkey. Using an unobserved components state-space model (via the Beveridge-Nelson decomposition), I decompose the remittances and output series into stochastic permanent and cyclical components. I then use the resulting stationary cyclical components to estimate co-movements between remittances and output series. Empirical results indicate that remittances are countercyclical with all the home countries: Mexico, El Salvador, and Turkey. With respect to source countries, remittances to Mexico are countercyclical with the United States business cycle, while remittances from the United States to El Salvador and remittances from Germany to Turkey are strongly procyclical with output fluctuations in the source country. The contribution of this paper to the literature is twofold: (1) I use high-frequency data (quarterly) for a relatively long period of time; and (2) I employ more recent and sophisticated econometric techniques in the decomposition of the series into stochastic permanent and cyclical components. The existing literature lacks both of these important aspects of my analysis. I show that once both of these factors are incorporated into the analysis, empirical results are more aligned to those predicted by economic theory.Business cycles ; Emigrant remittances ; Time-series analysis ; Econometric models ; Stochastic analysis

A comparison of nonlethal sampling methods for amphibian gut microbiome analyses

    No full text
First published: 28 January 2020Non-invasive sampling methods for studying intestinal microbiome are widely applied in studies of endangered species and in those conducting temporal monitoring during manipulative experiments. Although existing studies show that non-invasive sampling methods among different taxa vary in their accuracy, to date, no studies have been published comparing non-lethal sampling methods in adult amphibians. In this study, we compare microbiomes from two non-invasive sample types (faeces and cloacal swabs) to that of the large intestine in adult cane toads, Rhinella marina. We use 16S rRNA sequencing to investigate how microbial communities change along the digestive tract and which non-lethal sampling method better represents large intestinal microbiota. We found that cane toads' intestinal microbiota was dominated by Bacteroidetes, Proteobacteria, Firmicutes and, interestingly, we also saw a high proportion of Fusobacteria, which has previously been associated with marine species and changes in frog immunity. The large and small intestine of cane toads had a similar microbial composition, but the large intestine showed higher diversity. Our results indicate that cloacal swabs were more similar to large intestine samples than were faecal samples, and small intestine samples were significantly different from both non-lethal sample types. Our study provides valuable information for future investigations of the cane toad gut microbiome and validates the use of cloacal swabs as a non-lethal method to study changes in the large intestine microbiome. These data provide insights for future studies requiring non-lethal sampling of amphibian gut microbiota.Jia Zhou, Tiffanie Maree Nelson, Carlos Rodriguez Lopez, Roshmi Rekha Sarma, Shao Jia Zhou, Lee Ann Rollin
