Dimensions and shapes of block copolymer domains assembled on lithographically defined chemically patterned substrates
No full textThin films of a nearly symmetric lamellae-forming diblock copolymer of poly(styrene-b-methyl methacrylate) (PS-b-PMMA) having a bulk repeat period, L-O, were directed to assemble vertically away from chemically nanopatterned striped substrates (having a periodicity L-S) that consisted of alternating stripes that were preferentially wet by the two blocks of the copolymer. The relative widths of the adjacent stripes were systematically varied such that the normalized line width of the chemical surface pattern, defined as the width of the stripe that was wet by the styrene block of the block copolymer, W, divided by the constant chemical surface pattern period, L-s had values between 0.30 and 0.65. On chemical surface patterns with L-S approximate to L-O the diblock copolymer domains formed defect-free perpendicular arrays if the normalized line width W/L-S, was between 0.36 and 0.63. On chemical surface patterns with L-S not equal L-O, the range of W/L-S capable of inducing defect free arrays decreased as the difference between L-S and L-O increased. Single-chain-in-mean-field (SCMF) simulations provided information on the dimensions and shapes of the block copolymer domains. The SCMF simulations indicated that the widths of the lamellae at half film thickness were 0.47L(S) independent of W/L-S and the angle of the interface between the vertically oriented domains remained within 11 degrees of the substrate normal over the range of experimentally relevant values of W/L-S
Simulation of Defect Reduction in Block Copolymer Thin Films by Solvent Annealing
No full textSolvent annealing provides an effective means to control the self-assembly of block copolymer (BCP) thin films. Multiple effects, including swelling, shrinkage, and morphological transitions, act in concert to yield ordered or disordered structures. The current understanding of these processes is limited; by relying on a theoretically informed coarse-grained model of block copolymers, a conceptual framework is presented that permits prediction and rationalization of experimentally observed behaviors. Through proper selection of several process conditions, it is shown that a narrow window of solvent pressures exists over which one can direct a BCP material to form well-ordered, defect-free structures

No full textPhDThis thesis is essentially about the "how" and "why" of the Indian
experience as documented in novels by Paul Scott, Ruth Prawer Jhabvala
and V S Naipaul. The study points to the difficulty of arriving at any
conclusive definition of the country and its people. I show that
differences in attitudes, responses or behaviour are both overt and
subtle, and depend upon whether the writer or the character identifies
with the situation or community with which he or she interacts. It is
the individual's sense of belonging or not belonging to his or her own
group - be this along racial, cultural or gender lines - that accounts
for the differing perspectives evident in these novels. The points-of-
view of the outsider and the insider can therefore be seen as
mutual comments upon the other.
Since the struggle between belonging and not belonging becomes acute
when the old meets the new, focus is centred on communities
experiencing change. These include the British in India, West-Indian
Indians and westernised Indians. Despite their differences, all three
communities share similar reasons for either an acceptance or
rejection of the 'Other'. The thesis argues that the need for
emotional stability compels allegiance to the traditional group, while
the desire for individuality encourages surrender to the new. The
former nurtures a sense of belonging while, it is argued, that the
latter is perceived as the hallmark of those who do not belong.
Tensions arise when both these needs demand to be met. What I show to
be ironic in this struggle between belonging and not belonging is that
those things which individuals overtly reject are often unexpressed
parts of their personal pysche. The barrier between "them" and "us" is
therefore very fragile
Directed Assembly of Non-equilibrium ABA Triblock Copolymer Morphologies on Nanopatterned Substrates
No full textThe majority of past work on directed assembly of block copolymers on chemically nanopatterned surfaces (or chemical patterns) has focused on AB diblock copolymers, and the resulting morphologies have generally corresponded to equilibrium states. Here we report a study on directed assembly of ABA triblock copolymers. Directed assembly of thin films of symmetric poly(methyl methacrylate-b-styrene-b-methyl methacrylate) (PMMA-b-PS-b-PMMA) triblock copolymers is shown to be capable of achieving a high degree of perfection, registration, and accuracy on striped patterns having periods, L-s,L- commensurate with the bulk period of the copolymer, L-o. When L-s is incommensurate with L-o, the triblock copolymer domains can reach dimensions up to 55% larger or 13% smaller than L-o. The range over which triblock copolymers tolerate departures from a commensurate L-s is significantly larger than that accessible with the corresponding diblock copolymer material on analogous directed assembly systems. The assembly kinetics of the triblock copolymer is approximately 3 orders of magnitude slower than observed in the diblock system. Theoretically informed simulations are used to interpret our experimental observations; a thermodynamic analysis reveals that triblocks can form highly ordered, non-equilibrium metastable structures that do not arise in the diblock
The assessment of motivation in the Saint Paul Hotel employees

The collective hotel industry is a significant parrot of the world tourism industry. The industry is by design delivers services to be registered and non registered guests. Key in the process of delivering service in any hotel situation is the hotel staff. The ultimate quality of service provided will depend on the collective ability of staff, training and individual motivation to produce the services demanded by the guest. Hotels are physical structures supported by human resources that enable the delivery of service. Key in the process of delivering quality service is the individual motivation of all employees whether professional, skilled or unskilled. With the growth of the service industry the hotel industry now competes for quality service employees. Research finds that it is a challenge for hotel management today to motivate employees to provide quality services as high turnover and absenteeism is widespread in the United States hotel industry. This study evaluated the motivation factors of employees in a four star hotel in St. Paul, Minnesota. The study centered on why people choose to work for this specific hotel while modeling motivational factors that enable their overall performance. The study also sought to learn if there is a gender based difference in motivational factors. The results of the study revealed that the main reasons people choose to work at the hotel was based on the “quality” class of the hotel, interesting jobs, salary and job security. When considering the gender construct, gender did have a role influencing employees’ perception of motivational factors. Males preferred salary, job security and loyalty to employees, while females preferred interesting jobs, working environment and camaraderie with co-workers

Obtained refractive index determined from various resolution of Paul wavelet were compared with the input values, and the importance of the tunable resolution with Paul wavelet was discussed briefly. Signing Off: Paul Klee’s Insula dulcamara
No full textPaul Klee’s painting Insula dulcamara (1938) has been the focus of numerous reviews and analyses in academic and popular literature on the artist over a period of many years. However, most such readings fall short of a comprehensive interpretation of the composition as a whole, and assume – implicitly or otherwise – that the painting’s black markings are not readable as ‘writing’ in any linguistic sense. By contrast, this paper offers a novel analysis of the painting’s ‘way to form’ grounded in Klee’s writings on his own compositional practices, biography, and approach to meaning-making, and in so doing demonstrates a compelling perceptual gestalt in which the painting’s black markings are configured as a graphical abstraction of the name ‘Paul Klee’; the configuration as a whole constituting the artist’s signature. This signature is taken as the prototypical basis for a plausible reconstruction of the composition’s ‘way to form’ via Klee’s unfolding thematic meditation on life, death and identity. The paper explores some implications of this analysis for the long-standing debate over authorial intention versus potential signification as valid bases for interpretation in art and literature. Exploiting the thematic coincidence of authorial death and signature in both Insula dulcamara and the writings of Jacques Derrida, it is suggested that the painting may be seen as iconographically exemplifying – if not actually resolving - issues at the heart of the notorious ‘Death of the Author’ debate that dominated late twentieth century critical discourse
