Organic farming increases the technical efficiency of olive farms in Italy

    No full text
While there is growing recognition of the positive role played by organic farming in the reduction of the negative externalities due to conventional agriculture, there is uncertainty about the effect of the latter on the economic performance of the farms. In this scenario, the present paper aims at investigating the effect of organic farming on technical efficiency in Italian olive farms. A cross‐section dataset was analyzed through the stochastic frontier function, where the adoption of organic farming was explicitly modeled. Then, to obtain an unbiased estimate of the impact of organic farming on technical efficiency, a propensity score matching method was implemented. The findings reveal that organic farming increases technical efficiency in Italian olive farms by approxi-mately 10%. The highest impact of organic farming is observed in small farms. As for the propensity to become organic, we found that the production and the direct sales of a higher quality of gross marketable output, as well as the intensity of labor and machines, increase the probability to adopt organic farming. Conversely, farm localization, the availability of family labor, and financial capital discourage conversion to the organic farming system

The attention to business networks, therefore to the business relationships among companies, supply chain operators, manufacturers and consumers, aimed at commercial transactions, exchange of information, sharing of norms and associations of resources become an asset in the definition of modern strategies of competitive advantage for agribusiness companies. In this perspective, the short chain represents an interesting business model network, rooted in the specific territorial context, which, through specific organizational characteristics and diversified multi-functional activities, is enhanced by human and social resources, internal and external (at the company), and able to act on the local aggregation process and territorial value creation. Share capital and human capital become, therefore, the determining factors for the effectiveness of the short food supply chain experiences, especially in the inland areas, and for wider dissemination and sharing of the value created. Aim of this work is an analysis of the functional relationships between social capital and human capital in farms, diversified and multifunctional, which have taken paths of short chain. For this purpose, the empirical verification aimed to investigate how the quality of human capital affects the effectiveness of relational networks and how it could lead to have impacts on the performance of short chain, improving its ability to create value for the enterprise and for the territory. The results of the study made possible to understand the mechanisms and the strategic variables of this innovative mode of direct governance of transactions between producer and consumer-citizen, in specific territorial rural systems, and to indicate useful policy implications

Product reformulation in the food system to improve food safety. Evaluation of policy interventions

The objective of this study is to understand the level of attention that the consumer awards to a balanceddiet and to product ingredients, with a twofold purpose: to understand whether food product reformulationcan generate a competitive advantage for companies that practice it and to evaluate the mostappropriate policy interventions to promote a healthy diet. Reformulation strategy, in the absence ofbinding rules, could be generated by consumers. Results from qualitative research and from empiricalanalysis have shown that the question of health is a latent demand influenced by two main factors: ageneral lack of information, and the marketing strategies adopted by companies which bring about anincrease in the information asymmetry between producers and consumers. In the absence of bindingrules, it is therefore necessary that the government implement information campaigns (food education)aimed at increasing knowledge regarding the effects of unhealthy ingredients, in order to inform andimprove consumer choice. It is only by means of widespread information campaigns that food productreformulation can become a strategic variable and allow companies to gain a competitive advantage. Thismay lead to virtuous results in terms of reducing the social costs related to an unhealthy diet

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate sparkling wine consumption behavior and preferences of a large sample of US consumers (n=1,096) exploring the differences among genders and generational cohorts. Design/methodology/approach The sample has been drawn from Wine opinions, a specialized market research company with a large online panel of US wine consumers. Data were collected through a survey mailing model, administering a structured questionnaire. Findings Findings reveal that consumption frequency between genders is not statistically different and women generally prefer sparkling wines priced below 15.BabyBoomersisthegenerationwiththelowestsparklingwineconsumptionfrequency.Furthermore,GenerationXandBabyBoomershavethehighestconsumptionfrequencyinthepricerange15. Baby Boomers is the generation with the lowest sparkling wine consumption frequency. Furthermore, Generation X and Baby Boomers have the highest consumption frequency in the price range 15–19.99,whileMillennialsinthe19.99, while Millennials in the 10–$14.99 one. Originality/value The study sheds light on the changing consumer attitudes to create competitive advantages for wineries. Specifically, it provides valuable marketing insights into the peculiarities of sparkling wine consumption for each generation (e.g. price-point preferences and type of wine)
