    Turkish parliamentary debates about the international recognition of the Armenian genocide: development and variations in the official denialism

To provide an evidence-based and thorough perspective on the Turkish political stance in this discussion, this article explores all the relevant speeches in Turkish parliamentary records. It pays particular attention to political parties’ stances, the historical evolution of the debate, and the significance of the individual profiles of parliamentarians who contributed to the discussion. The findings show that most political parties in Turkey articulated versions of denial, except for a few marginal anti-denial voices. The study concludes that while political parties’ ideological orientations predominantly shape the Turkish debate on the international recognition of the Armenian genocide, historical contexts, local memories, and the individual backgrounds of parliamentarians seem to inspire minor variations in their tones.The work was supported by the Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian [254570]Peer reviewe

The views expressed and any mistakes in the second chapter are the author's sole responsibility"--Foreword.The first chapter of this dissertation is based on the observation that during the past 50 years, the US economy has been characterized by a rapid decline of labor unions and a substantial rise in wage inequality. The chapter proposes that the rise in the skill premium in the non-union sector, for instance, due to technical change, can potentially explain these trends. Based on the premise that labor unions compress wages between skilled and unskilled workers, a larger skill premium encourages skilled workers to withdraw from the union. If this is accompanied by a fall in the productivity of unskilled workers, firms become more reluctant to hire the relatively expensive union workers, reinforcing the decline in the unionization rate. To evaluate this hypothesis, we develop a macroeconomic model of endogenous union membership with heterogenous agents, where union members are selected from the middle of the skill distribution and have significant wage gains that are decreasing in skill, consistent with US evidence. The model predicts that the rise in skill prices in the non-union sector explains 30-60% of the decline in the unionization rate. It was argued that the declining union activity contributed to the rise in wage inequality by changing the labor force composition. We find this effect to be much smaller due to selection into union jobs. In the second chapter, I investigate the role of heterogeneity and misaggregation in explaning the empirically missing correlations between the relative consumption and real exchange rates between countries, referred to as the Backus-Smith puzzle. I construct a two-country general-equilibrium model with heterogeneous households that choose to consume either an imported good, or its domestic variant. I show that upon aggregation, the corresponding "representative agent'' acts as if he is subject to taste shocks, which works towards weakening the tight link between relative prices and quantities. The model therefore constitutes a microfoundation for what shows up as taste shocks in the data. I argue that the missing correlations could be an artifact of heterogeneity

    Bibliometric Mapping of the Computational Intelligence Field

    In this paper, a bibliometric study of the computational intelligence field is presented. Bibliometric maps showing the associations between the main concepts in the field are provided for the periods 1996–2000 and 2001–2005. Both the current structure of the field and the evolution of the field over the last decade are analyzed. In addition, a number of emerging areas in the field are identified. It turns out that computational intelligence can best be seen as a field that is structured around four important types of problems, namely control problems, classification problems, regression problems, and optimization problems. Within the computational intelligence field, the neural networks and fuzzy systems subfields are fairly intertwined, whereas the evolutionary computation subfield has a relatively independent position.neural networks;bibliometric mapping;fuzzy systems;bibliometrics;computational intelligence;evolutionary computation

    Negotiated settlements and peace referendums

    Institutional innovations in conflict management have received considerable academic attention in the past decades. Yet few studies have considered the design of referendums in peace processes and the role of popular mandates in catalysing negotiated settlements. Drawing evidence from divided societies, particularly the contrasting cases of South Africa and Cyprus, the article points to the importance of ratification sequence and early mandate referendums. Specifically, it demonstrates how mandate referendums focusing initially on domestic constituencies enable leaders to pre‐empt ethnic outbidding challenges while concluding a peace agreement. An early ratification process could safeguard the peace process from unavoidable reversals in public opinion, increase flexibility as to the timing of critical decisions and maximise the credibility of leaders aiming for a negotiated settlement. The study of mandate referendums has important implications for broader research on international mediations since it suggests mechanisms by which political actors could ensure the ratification of significant treaties in global or regional politics

    Using fuzzy logic modelling to simulate farmers’ decision-making on diversification and integration in the Mekong Delta, Vietnam

    To reveal farmers’ motives for on-farm diversification and integration of farming components in the Mekong Delta, Vietnam, we developed a fuzzy logic model (FLM) using a 10-step approach. Farmers’ decision-making was mimicked in a three-layer hierarchical architecture of fuzzy inference systems, using data of 72 farms. The model includes three variables for family motives of diversification, six variables related to component integration, next to variables for the production factors and for farmers’ appreciation of market prices and know-how on 10 components. To obtain a good classification rate of the less frequent activities, additional individual fine-tuning was necessary after general model calibration. To obtain the desired degree of sensitivity to each variable, it was necessary to use up to five linguistic values for some of the input and output variables in the intermediate hierarchical layers. Model’s sensitivity to motivational variables determining diversification and integration was of the same magnitude as its sensitivity to market prices and farmers’ know-how of the activities, but less than its sensitivity to labour, capital and land endowment. Modelling to support strategic decision-making seems too elaborate for individual farms, but FLM will be useful to integrate farmers’ opinions in strategic decision-making at higher hierarchical levels.Infrastructures, Systems and ServicesTechnology, Policy and Managemen

    Efficient picosecond x-ray pulse generation from plasmas in the radiation dominated regime

    The efficient conversion of optical laser light into bright ultrafast x-ray pulses in laser created plasmas is of high interest for dense plasma physics studies, material science, and other fields. However, the rapid hydrodynamic expansion that cools hot plasmas has limited the x-ray conversion efficiency (CE) to 1% or less. Here we demonstrate more than one order of magnitude increase in picosecond x-ray CE by tailoring near solid density plasmas to achieve a large radiative to hydrodynamic energy loss rate ratio, leading into a radiation loss dominated plasma regime. A record 20% CE into ℎ>1  keVhν>1  keV photons was measured in arrays of large aspect ratio Au nanowires heated to keV temperatures with ultrahigh contrast femtosecond laser pulses of relativistic intensity. The potential of these bright ultrafast x-ray point sources for table-top imaging is illustrated with single shot flash radiographs obtained using low laser pulse energy. These results will enable the deployment of brighter laser driven x-ray sources at both compact and large laser facilities.Fil: Hollinger, Reed.     A Fuzzy Decision Support System for Magnetic Component Design

    In many areas of electrical engineering, magnetic components like transformers and inductors are necessary parts of an electrical circuit. Designing such a component means finding a suitable combination of a ferrite core and a copper wire, while a great variety of requirements have to be satisfied. However, finding the optimal combination is complicated because of the large number of available sizes and types of cores and wires. A Decision Support System (DSS) can assist a designer of magnetic components in selecting the suitable component alternatives and in ranking them, hereby improving the efficiency and the results of the design procedure. This paper describes the aims and the typical problems of magnetic component design, and discusses a Decision Support System for facilitating the design procedure.     An investigation of the electrical properties of PbO based MOS-type different Schottky barrier diodes on a structure

    The electrical properties PbO based MOS (metal-oxide semiconductor)-type different Schottky barrier diodes on an Al/PbO/p-Si structure have been investigated and done a comparisonin this study. Al/PbO/p-Si structures were fabricated and their current-voltage (I-V) characteristics were measured at room temperature and in the dark. We tried to obtain information about the structure by comparing the electrical properties of the seven diodes on the Al/PbO/p-Si structure. The electrical characteristic parameters such as saturation current, ideality factor, barrier height and series resistance of the seven Al/PbO/p-Si Schottky barrier diodes were investigated from the forward bias I-V characteristics by using thermionic emission theory. The experimental values of ideality factors for seven diodes have changed from 1.09 to 2.95. The series resistances seven diodes have changed from 1.18 k to 3.20 k Omega by using dV/dln(I)-I characteristics. The barrier heights for seven diodes have changed from 0.64 eV to 0.74eV. The series resistances for seven diodes have changed from 1.41 k Omega to 3.38 k Omega
