Emilio Ghione and the Mask of Za La Mort

    No full text
This study aims to examine the cultural impact of Emilio Ghione's Za La Mort films (1914-1924) on Italian culture. These films constitute a significant Italian combination of several early cinema genres and sub-genres, such as the apache film, the traces of which have almost entirely disappeared. More broadly, the changing interpretations of Za La Mort figure allow us to understand wider shifts in Italian and European popular culture. The first chapter of the study considers the wealth of influences from European popular culture that Emilio Ghione merged into the apache films, such as the apache sub-culture in Paris. The second chapter of the study then reconstructs the Za La Mort filmography, most of which has now been lost, from film viewings and archival documents. The third chapter considers Emilio Ghione's Za La Mort novels and theatrical productions in the years 1922-1930, and Ghione's attempts to make Za La Mort a more Fascist and nationalistic figure. The fourth chapter considers the enduring figure of Za La Mort in Italian popular culture, especially in Raffaele Matarazzo's Fumeria D'Oppio and a 1940's fumetti series. The fifth chapter considers the audience reception of the Za La Mort films from the limited remaining evidence and, positioning the series between the Cinema of Attractions of the 1900s and the Classical Cinema of the mid-1920's, analyses how the Za La Mort films were constructed to please a predominantly working class audience that valued spectacular thrills and great acting performances over narrative consistency and stable characterisation. This research re-establishes the importance of one of Italian cinema's most important film-makers of the silent period, and his enduring importance as a popular cultural figure in Italy

Influence of the Thermal Energy Storage Strategy on the Performance of a Booster Heat Pump for Domestic Hot Water Production System Based on the Use of Low Temperature Heat Source

    No full text
[EN] Energy recovery from a low temperature heat source using heat pump technology is becoming a popular application. The domestic hot water demand has the characteristic of being very irregular along the day, with periods in which the demand is very intensive and long periods in which it is quite small. In order to use heat pumps for this kind of applications efficiently, the proper sizing and design of the water storage tank is critical. In this work, the optimal sizing of the two possible tank alternatives, closed stratified tank and variable-water-volume tank, is presented, and their respective performance compared, for domestic hot water production based on low temperature energy recovery in two potential applications (grey water and ultra-low temperature district heating). The results show that the efficiency of these kind of systems is very high and that variable-water-volume tanks allow a better use of the energy source, with an 8% higher exergy efficiency and around 3% better seasonal performance factor (SPF), being able to provide similar comfort levels with a smaller system size"Vicerectorado de Investigacion, Innovacion y Transferencia of the Universitat Politecnica de Valencia (Spain)" throught the project "REDUCCION DE LAS EMISIONES DE CO2 A ALTA TEMPERATURE A PARTIR DE LA RECUPERACION DE CALOR RESIDUAL MEDIANTE EL USO DE UNA BOMBA DE CALOR"with the reference SP20180039 from the program "Primeros proyectos de investigacion (PAID-06-18)".Masip, X.; Navarro-Peris, E.; Corberán, JM. Alternative producer-consumer relationships: the AgroGeoTrace project and the speciality products virtual roads

    No full text
The AgroGeoTrace (AGT) project makes use of Geographical Information Systems and multichannel information technologies to facilitate the access of final consumers to local food speciality products. The project builds a prototype of an informative system designed, first, to help consumers to understand the agronomic and technological characteristics that make the targeted products special ones, and, second, to precisely and easily locate the sites (farms and oil mills) where they can buy them. The information made available through the project is intended to the symbolic relocalization of the regional products, hence to promote them and to create added value. The final outcomes of the project are the virtual maps of on-farm shops made available on Digital television (channel In+), PDAs and mobile phones.food speciality products, short agro-food chains, Geographical Information Systems, Agribusiness,

Fault detection and diagnosis algorithm for multiple simultaneous faults in residential air-conditioning systems: Development, validation study and critical analysis

    No full text
[EN] Detecting and diagnosing faults in residential air conditioning (AC) systems is crucial for preventing critical failures and ensuring efficient operation. Some of these soft faults are refrigerant undercharge (UC), overcharge (OC), inadequate evaporator airflow (EA), or liquid line restrictions (LL). Data-driven methodologies have proven effective in achieving reliable detection but require a large amount of data. This paper proposes utilizing a model based on vapor compression cycles capable of simulating a wide range of indoor/outdoor operating conditions and faults imposed individually and several co-occurring (multiple combinations) for a residential AC unit. This simulated dataset is used to train a Support Vector Machine (SVM) classification algorithm to distinguish between fault, non-fault, and multiple fault states. The SVM uses features obtained from a small number of sensors, making this methodology adequate for residential AC units that typically have limited instrumentation. The proposed method is applied to the same simulated unit, which is experimentally tested in the laboratory with imposed faults, resulting in a balanced accuracy of 82% and a weighted F1-score of 84%. These results demonstrate the feasibility of training a fault detection and diagnosis algorithm with simulation data without requiring an extensive experimental campaign. The authors gratefully acknowledge the financial support provided by the project "Decarbonizacion de edificios e industrias con sistemas hibridos de bomba de calor", funded by "Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovacion" of Spain, with project code: PID2020-115665RB-I00. Étude du débit de circulation de l'huile dans un compresseur à spirales à vitesse variable fonctionnant au propane

    No full text
[EN] The use of hydrocarbons as refrigerants is being more common in recent years. Nevertheless, the solubility of propane in POE oils is significantly higher than in HFCs. This fact has made that POE oils used with hydrocarbons usually have a higher viscosity than the commonly used with HFCs. This approach solves the lubrication problem in the compressor but the way in which oil could affect the system performance is not so widely studied. In this work, an experimental analysis about the oil circulation rate of a variable speed compressor working with propane has been done. The study has analysed the oil circulation at different compressor speeds and evaporating temperatures. The obtained results have shown that the oil circulation rate increases with the compressor speed and reaches values higher than 5% at high speeds. This fact can penalize the COP of the system in more than 15% in these working conditions. The authors would like to acknowledge the Spanish "Ministerio De Economia Y Competitividad", through the project ref-ENE2017-83665-C2-1-P "Maximizacion de la eficiencia y minimizacion del impacto ambiental de bombas de calor para la descarbonizacion de la calefaccion/ACS en los edificios de consumo casi nulo" for the given support.
