Roger Abrahams, director of the African and Afro-American Research Institute at the University of Texas-Austin and author of Positively Black, argues the case for ethnic diversity in this interview. He also discusses that the idea of "new ethnicity" is not restricted to black or brown America and he sees a widespread return to old mores inherent in the traditional ethnic value system. Interviewed by WTMJ-TV host Jim Peck.GrayscaleSoun

For and against; should doctors advise young people to abstain from sex?

    No full text
Against a background of high rates of teenage pregnancy and an increasing prevalence of sexually transmitted infections, the sexual conduct of young people is vigorously debated. Many teenagers later say that they had sexual intercourse "too early" but should doctors be advising young people to abstain from sex? Trevor Stammers, who is a tutor in general practice and an author and broadcaster on sexual health, and Roger Ingham, who has done research on sexual conduct and sex education in Britain and other countries, consider whether advising abstinence is an effective response to declining teenage sexual health

Didaktiske escape room i matematiske læringsaktiviteter

Society is rapidly changing, and future citizens will face significant demands. Skills such as communication and collaboration will increasingly be challenged. Education and what students should learn must be both relevant and future-oriented (Utdanningsdirektoratet, 2019). As teachers, we must therefore gain various tools in our toolkit, and recently, a new concept has emerged in classrooms worldwide. Escape rooms have gained popularity in many educational institutions (Taraldsen & Haara, 2020, s. 28). Dialogue and collaboration are central in this study, which has employed a "Mixed Methods" design to answer the research question "To what extent can didactic escape rooms contribute to mathematical verbal dialogue and collaboration among students in the classroom?". The study has been aimed at high school students who have participated in learning activities using escape rooms. After the activities, students completed a survey that formed the basis for qualitative research interviews. Robin Alexander (2020, s. 131) has developed a framework highlighting principles of dialogic teaching. Collectivity, reciprocity, and support can enhance dialogue and learning potential in classrooms where these characteristics are evident. The study showed that students believe escape rooms promote engagement, collaboration, and hands-on learning. Additionally, they believe these activities can lead to a deeper understanding of certain topics. The learning activity has provided a sense of variety, and the participants in this study have expressed a desire for this in their school days. Furthermore, the study indicates that students' perception of the learning activity reinforces the idea from a teacher's perspective that this activity falls under the concept of dialogic teaching. Several researchers have called for further research on the phenomenon of escape rooms. This study contributes to this call and suggests that previous research's positive views on the activity's place in the classroom may be justified. However, like other researchers, I believe that the phenomenon requires further study and development to fully understand its potential in education.Masteroppgave i matematikkdidatikkMAT699VID-MAUMA
