Short Communication: Does the presence of the cow influence the absorption of immunoglobulins by the neonatal dairy calf? Can. J. Anim. Sci. 91: 349–352. Holstein calves were kept with their dams for 0.5, 6 or 24 h after birth. Calves were fed 85 g colostrum kg–1 birth weight 1 h after birth, and were prevented from suckling their dam. At 24 h, all calves had similar serum IgG levels indicating that the presence of their dam had no effect on IgG absorption. </jats:p

Combined endovascular and surgical treatment of carotid body tumor in a patient with thoracic situs solitus

    No full text
BACKGROUND: Chemodectomas of the head and neck are tumors that originate from the neural crest. The authors report a case of carotid body tumor with chronic hypoxia secondary to congenital cyanogenic cardiac malformation, radiologically and surgically treated. METHODS AND RESULTS: A 37-year-old woman presented 1-year history of a slow-growing right lateral-cervical swelling. Radiologic examination led to a suspicion of carotid body tumor. Her history revealed thoracic situs solitus and a complex congenital heart disease. She was hospitalized for a selective angiography of the cervical vessels. Twenty-four hours later, the tumor was completely removed under local anesthesia. One year later, there were no signs of recurrence, and the patient showed a correct hemodynamic compensation. CONCLUSIONS: The choice of surgical resection with selective preoperative embolization, which induced the obliteration of the feeder vessels, devascularizing the tumor and avoiding significant intraoperative bleeding, was successful. Subjective assessment of palatability, digestibility and emotions in healthy volunteers after ingestion of an iced dessert: preliminary report

Dietary habits can be influenced by several factors such as emotional status and food palatability represented by food smell, taste, texture, appearance and temperature. The aim of this study is to assess the palatability and digestibility of a coffee-flavored iced dessert ingested at the end of a standardized meal and its impact on emotional status in a sample of 30 healthy female volunteers. Thirty healthy female volunteers, after ENT and psychological assessment, were asked to fill in a Psycho-Emotional Questionnaire to assess their basal emotional pattern before the consumption of an iced coffee-flavored dessert after a standard meal. After the meal they filled in an Organoleptic-Sensory questionnaire, a Dynamic Digeribility questionnaire and again a Psycho-Emotional Questionnaire. In our study, most of the subjects found the tested coffee-flavoured iced dessert pleasant according to the Organoleptic-Sensorial Questionnaire (OSQ), in terms of taste, aspect, texture and smell; moreover, in 29 subjects the Dynamic Digestibility Questionnaire (DDQ) resulted in a good digestive experience. By means of the Psycho-Emotional Questionnaire (PEQ), an improvement of feelings and mood, associated with good data of digestibility and palatability was recorded. Although this observation is not statistically significant, the results seem to show a positive correlation between pleasure in eating such a product and emotional status. These data are preliminary and need further investigations on a larger population, in order to confirm this association, also in a mixed population, comparing male and female eating behaviour

Dosi vocali e disturbi vocali in insegnanti di scuola primaria

    No full text
