The article focuses on the constructive elements which used by Józef Hen to give birth to the figure of Marek Marczewski (later Mraczewski) in the short story “The Twin”, written as a reaction to the tragical riots in Warsaw in the first months of 1968. Though often seen as a work conceived on the spur of the moment, this short story is in fact more complex than that already in the first version, published in the émigré journal Kultura in 1972 under the pseudonym Korab. A closer analysis of the relationship between the protagonist Leopold Piński and the security agent Marek Marczewski reveals intertextual references to Dostoevsky’s The Double, and Crime and Punishment, and in the edition published in 1990 also to Bolesław Prus’s The Doll

In 2018 prof. Wiesław Wydra found out an old printed version of the famous old-Polish work De Morte. Prologus. This epoch-making finding creates new opportunities for research on this text. The printed version contains the conclusion of the dialogue, which was omitted in the only witness known so far. Nevertheless, the printed version is rather a reworking, than a faithful reproduction of a pre-existing text. It corresponds neither to the transcription of the lost scroll nor to the old-Russian translation, which is in turn evidence of an active attitude of the translator towards the original text, so that it does not testify completely to the Polish original. The author compares the three extant versions of the work (the two old-Polish versions and the old-Russian one), and focuses on what this comparison can tell about the work with the text accomplished by the editor of the printed version, as well as the attempts at reconstructing the original medieval version.

The War of Human Beings against the “duxi zloby podnebesnye” in the Works of Ivan Vyšens’kyj. A Statement of the Issue The article is based on the work of Harvey Goldblatt Godlike “Simplicity” versus Diabolic “Craftiness”: On the Significance of Ivan Vyshens’kyi’s “Apology for the Slavic Language, which points out the importance of the biblical verset Eph 6:12 for an in-depth understanding of his works. This verset is a biblical key, according to the termin used by the Italian slavist Riccardo Picchio. It refers to the struggle of Christians against the Devil and its forces. The paper states some research topics resulting from a hermeneutic approach to the texts: 1) how the action of the Devil is presented in Ivan Vyšens’kyj’s works; 2) the role of quotations of Eph 6:12, their context and function; 3) the names and epithets for the Devil and its forces; 4) the struggle of human beings against the Devil and the role of monastic life in it. After an overview of the actions of the Devil depicted in the monk’s works, the Author considers the role of quotations of Eph 6:12. This verset occurs in marked positions. The presence of this verset in contexts related to the core of Ivan Vyšens’kyj’s philosophy proves of its strategical role in the comprehension of the polemist’s works. The translation from Greek of Eph 6:12 and the words used to define the forces of the Evil are an issue to investigate, too. Finally, the Author presents the ways proposed by Ivan Vyšens’kyj to fight against these powerful enemies

Gdańsk/Danzig, Borderlands and Humour in Contemporary Polish Fiction

    No full text
The article examines how humorous effects in some works by authors connected to the city of Danzig encourages reflection on the part of the reader. Above all, attention is paid to those instances where humour is used to describe inter-ethnic relations in the period of the Second World War and its immediate aftermath. The author concentrates her attention particularly on the prose works of Paweł Huelle and Stefan Chwin. The analysis of a few examples shows how the use of humour is not a merely aesthetic choice, but also influences the way the reader reacts. Humour questions the commonly accepted axiology, modifying not only one’s judgement of characters and events, but also the basis on which those judgements are made. In this way the authors redefine their identities on a new basis and stimulate the reader to do likewise
