Identification and characterization of monooxygenase enzymes involved in 1,4-dioxane degradation in Pseudonocardia sp. strain ENV478, Mycobacterium sp. strain ENV421, and Nocardia sp. strain ENV425:
The first part of this dissertation deals with the identification and analysis of oxygenases possibly involved in a biodegradation of a possible human carcinogen, 1, 4-dioxane.
The cometabolic oxidations of 1, 4-dioxane in three gram positive bacteria were analyzed. In Mycobacterium sp. ENV421 and Nocardia sp. ENV425, 1, 4-dioxane is oxidized during growth on propane. Three putative propane oxidizing enzymes (alkane monooxygenase, soluble diiron monooxygenase, and cytochrome P450) were identified in both strains. While in strain ENV425 only soluble diiron monooxygenase was expressed after growth on propane, in strain ENV421 all three genes were expressed. Although 1,4-dioxane oxidation activity could not be detected in heterologous host gene expression studies, aliphatic oxidation activity was observed with cytochrome P450 CYP153 from strain ENV421.
In strain Pseudonocardia sp. ENV478, 1, 4-dioxane oxidation activity was induced in the presence of tetrahydrofuran (THF). A THF-inducible soluble diiron monooxygenase was identified in strain ENV478. The oxygenase gene was transcribed in a complex operonic fashion yielding multiple transcripts with varying lengths. A gene knockdown experiment using antisense technology was employed to show that this gene is essential in THF and 1,4-dioxane degradation.
The second part of this dissertation dealt with the isolation and characterization of a novel solid alkane-utilizing β-Proteobacterium, Aquabacterium njensis sp. nov.
A novel liquid and solid alkane-degrading bacterium was isolated from hydrocarbon-contaminated soil in New Jersey, USA. The morphological, genomic, and metabolic properties of this organism were examined, including, observation with scanning electron microscopy, DNA-DNA hybridization, and nutritional screening of mainly aliphatic compounds as the sole source of carbon for growth. The preliminary screen of known alkane oxidation enzymes identified two alkane monooxygenase (AlkB) genes in the HMGZ-01 strain.
Sequence analysis of 16S rRNA showed that it has the highest similarity to the members of the genus Aquabacterium. The ability to hydrolyze urea and gelatin, NaCl tolerance, substrate utilization pattern and anaerobic growth distinguish the isolated strain from other members of this genus. We proposed the new species, Aquabacterium njensis, to be created with a single member and a type strain (HMGZ-01T).Ph.D.Includes bibliographical references (p. 151-161)by Hisako Masud

Life History of Ralph W. Spitzer
A detailed biographical sketch of Ralph W. Spitzer (b. 1918), a graduate student of Linus Pauling's and promising academic who joined the Oregon State College chemistry department in 1946. Promoted to Assistant Professor in 1947, Spitzer was nonetheless fired from the OSC faculty in 1949 by President August L. Strand, almost certainly because of progressive political views espoused by Spitzer and his wife Teresa. Spitzer eventually matriculated to Canada where he earned an M.D. specializing in chemical pathology and co-founded a successful diagnostic laboratory firm, C.J. Coady Associates.
The paper is based upon a series of oral history interviews conducted by the author with Ralph Spitzer, his daughter Eloise Spitzer, and his wife Hisako Kurotaki
Transforming Selves: Identity, History, and Autonomy among Roman Catholics in Tokyo

examines ways in which individuals (re)construct and (re)negotiate their social, cultural
and religious identities using Roman Catholicism. In particular, this study documents the
transformative processes associated with becoming Catholic in contemporary Tokyo. Past
scholarship has established that the Japanese sense of self can be characterized as
"relational" when compared with American and/or Western notions of the self. I argue
that this "relational" sense of self has been shaped through discursive processes in
Japanese history which have emphasized a Neo-Confucian based system of ethics. I
further argue that when converts deepen their understanding of the Catholic world view,
they experience a new power structure in which human authority is significantly
diminished. This re-structuring of authority results in a sense of liberation and elation for
these Japanese Catholics, whose sense of self has previously been shaped by social
obligations and by the Japanese emphasis on the social order and the authority of human
beings. The culturally sanctioned relational sense of self is often transformed to a less
relational one which privileges the notion of integrity, thereby creating an autonomous
self that is analogous to the Western notion of the individual. By situating social actors
within particular historical trajectories that the nation has taken, this study illuminates the

Fuzzy Set Approach to Poverty Reduction Compared with Growth Modelling
The fuzzy set method is used to examine economic poverty reduction in selected countries 1992-2002. We summarise the fuzzy set method as a socio-economic research protocol. We compare our findings with some explanations offered by growth economists for poverty reduction trajectories. Econometric growth models operate under the assumption that their core economic theories of growth are explanatorily adequate. However even in growth models, non-economic variables are effective because they offer complementary explanatory power. Critics of the linear additivity of causes suggest that fuzzy set analysis has some advantages over statistical regression analysis in this kind of context. Using poverty reduction as a dependent variate, we compare the two methods. Gender and human capital variables are important to growth outcomes. But other factors influence inequality, notably the absence of HIV AIDS virus rates, and size of government spending as causal mechanisms. This paper supports the hypothesis that women???s labour force participation positively helps poverty reduction. But we also find that the deeper causes of economic change, such as state intervention, are critical to human development trajectories. Our findings are consistent with the Weberian approach to the quality of state intervention. Using realist methodology, we ask ???what would have to have been true for the fuzzy set patterns to emerge as they did during 1992-2002???? The changes in poverty over time are very diverse so fuzzy set analysis proves useful in identifying small sets of countries whose characteristics helped them to achieve poverty reduction in that decade
