Nach vielfältigem Selbst- studium und einer Lehre in Frankfurt kam Nicolai 1752 nach Berlin in die Buchhandlung seines Va- ters zurück, dessen Leitung er 1758 übernahm. 1759–1765 gab Nicolai die Briefe, die Neueste Lit- teratur betre end und 1765–1806 die Allgemeine deutsche Bibliothek heraus, die zu maßgebenden Organen der deutschen Aufklärung wurden. Sie sind das Thema von Nicolais Brief an Kant vom 27. 9. 1773 (vgl. 10:141) und von Kants Antwort an Nicolai vom 25. 10. 1773 (vgl. 10:142) sowie von Kants Antwort vom 26. 2. 1778 (vgl. 10:223). Nicolai unterhielt ein gastliches Haus und war selber Mit- glied mehrerer Gesellschaften, darunter der Ber- liner Mittwochsgesellschaft, an deren Tre en von 1783 bis 1799 er regelmäßig teilnahm. Nicolai be- saß jedoch die seltene Gabe, sich mit den besten seiner Zeitgenossen zu überwerfen. Der Zwist mit Kant entfachte 1794 durch Nicolais komischen Ro- man Geschichte eines dicken Mannes, in welchem die kritische Philosophie grob parodiert wurde. Kant reagierte mit zwei kurzen, kräftigen Bemer- kungen in seinen Druckschriften (vgl. 6:209; 7:60). 1798 setzte Nicolai die Polemik gegen Kant in dem Roman Sempronius Gundibert und in der Vorre- de zu den Neun Gesprächen zwischen Christian Wol und einem Kantianer fort, woraufhin Kant in den zwei ö entlichen Briefen an Nicolai über die Buchmacherei ihn als völlig unwissenden, zu philosophischen Urteilen unfähigen Buchfabri- kanten beschrieb (vgl. → Über die Buchmacherei; 8:431–438). Zuletzt widmete Kant Nicolai folgen- des unverö entlichte Epigramm: „Vacca eine Zan- ge / Forceps eine Kuh / Rusticus ein Knebelspiß / Ein Nebulo bist Du“ (Op. post., 21:119)

Austrian economics: a tale of lost opportunities
No full textThis is a, somewhat indirect, rejoinder to Boettke (2019, this volume, Chapter 1). Doing Austrian economics is low prestige: Austrian economics does not get published in high-prestige journals and Austrian economists are not employed by top universities. And yet, up until World War II Austrian economics was an important part of the international economics community. The author argues that Austrian economists made several theoretical innovations that could have placed them at the frontier of research in economics, and present a brief coun-terfactual history of a thriving Austrian economics based on those innovations. However, the actual history of the Austrian School is quite different. A par-ticularly decisive factor that has made Austrian economics a fringe movement was the rejection of formal methods in theory and empirics. The author argues that Austrian economics is basically dying out as a voice in the conversation of modern economists

Is the Nicolai map unique?
No full textThe Nicolai map is a field transformation that relates supersymmetric theories at finite couplings g with the free theory at g = 0. It is obtained via an ordered exponential of the coupling flow operator integrated from 0 to g. Allowing multiple couplings, we find that the map in general depends on the chosen integration contour in coupling space. This induces a large functional freedom in the construction of the Nicolai map, which cancels in all correlator computations. Under a certain condition on the coupling flow operator the ambiguity disappears, and the power-series expansion for the map collapses to a linear function in the coupling. A special role is played by topological (theta) couplings, which do not affect perturbative correlation functions but also alter the Nicolai map. We demonstate that for certain ‘magical’ theta values the uniqueness condition holds, providing an exact map polynomial in the fields and independent of the integration contour. This feature is related to critical points of the Nicolai map and the existence of ‘instantons’. As a toy model, we work with N = 1 supersymmetric quantum mechanics. For a cubic superpotential and a theta term, we explicitly compute the one-, two- and three-point correlation function to one-loop order employing a graphical representation of the (inverse) Nicolai map in terms of tree diagrams, confirming the cancellation of theta dependence. Comparison of Nicolai and conventional Feynman perturbation theory nontrivially yields complete agreement, but only after adding all (1PI and 1PR) contributions
