Contribution for a publication by Nico Dockx & Clara Meister entitled, 'A Poem A Day'.\ud \ud "When in 2012, Nico and I talked about utopias and the upcoming Utopia Station exhibition, our conversation quickly turned towards his poster A Poem a Day (2003). Very soon our verbal exchange turned into an idea, into a plan, into an open invitation to friends, asking them to respond to this idea of a poem for every day of the year. Open in the sense that poetry—especially in daily situations—an happen at every moment and in all possible forms and disguises. Our daily hustle and bustle is often too loud and too fast for subtle observations or quiet thoughts. It assigned strolling and whispering the role of their poor cousins of everyday life. But it is exactly their shyness and elegance that may turn a moment of attention into a lasting impression. When a neon light is reflected in a puddle, when crumpled pages are opened and read aloud, when a saying is drawn as a witty sketch, or when a note becomes a song. Then you may pause for a while for all these forms of poetry around you. And so the invitation turned into poems, turned into a calendar, turned into a performance, and now turned into this exhibition. A poem a day keeps indifference away." - Clara Meister \ud \ud This short text is part of 'The Outlands' a long-term, collaborative creative critical writing project with Ola Ståhl and occasionally other invited collaborators. The Outlands seeks to explore writing primarily as a collaborative process and has generated several outputs (chapbooks, artist books, published essays and performances) that define a twisting trajectory in which, beyond all the ruptures and disjunctures, environments and characters, artefacts and objects, turns of phrase and concepts appear, disappear and reappear in a continuous movement

Interface engineering boosting the capacitive performance by constructing amorphous/crystalline NiCo-LDH@CoP@NiCo–P heterostructure

The nickel-cobalt layered double hydroxide (NiCo-LDH) with high theoretical capacitance has great application potential as supercapacitor (SC) electrodes. Nevertheless, poor conductivity, low stability, and aggregation propensity have been considered as its major drawbacks. In this study, we have successfully constructed the amorphous/crystalline NiCo-LDH@CoP@NiCo–P heterogeneous interface composites by introducing two phosphate shells to improve the electrochemical properties. The combination of NiCo–P's high rate performance with the high capacitive performance provided by the CoP coating addresses the issue of insufficient conductivity of the original NiCo-LDH, resulting in composite electrodes with excellent electrochemical performance. At the current density of 1 A g−1, the specific capacitance is 1652.8 F g−1, and the rate performance is 70.8 % when the current increases to 20 times. The capacitance retention is 87.5 % after 5000 cycles at 30 A g−1. The asymmetric supercapacitor prepared with AC as the anode electrode shows a high specific capacitance of 118 F g−1 in the water-based electrolyte system, with a capacitance retention of 60.1 % after 10,000 cycles at 10 A g−1. Furthermore, at a power density of 800 W kg−1, it exhibites a maximum energy density of 42 Wh kg−1. This study has demonstrated the enormous potential of interface design of heterostructures for supercapacitors.Full Tex

These R scripts (SIMPLE_Neutral.R and SIMPLE_Transient.R) simulates the appearance of 2 types of mutations in an exponentially growing yeast population starting from a single cell. The simulation can be performed either in the absence (null model with SIMPLE_Neutral.R) or in the presence (refined model with SIMPLE_Transient.R) of a subpopulation of transient mutator cells. For both models, the number of generations and the values of the two single mutation rates are chosen by the user. For the refined model, the size of the mutator subpopulation, the fold-change of the mutation rates and the duration of the mutator episode (in generations) are also defined by the user. The output provides the number of both single and double mutant cells in the final colony and the number of mutations that occurred during the colony development.</p&gt

    Nico Stuurman: Fluorescence Microscopy

    No full text
This lecture from the iBioSeminars project is presented by Nico Stuurman, professor of cellular and molecular pharmacology at UC-San Francisco. Fluorescence is a physical phenomenon in which a compound absorbs light and re-emits this as light of a usually higher wavelength. Since the excitation light source and the emitted fluorescence can be separated very well, we can detect fluorescence with very high sensitivity, making it even possible to visualize single molecules. Many different fluorescent probes for cellular components have been developed, including purely genetically encoded ones like the Green Fluorescent Protein (GFP). For these reasons, fluorescence microscopy is a very powerful tool in Cell Biology research. The video runs 40:45 and can be downloaded in QuickTime, MP4 or M4V formats. The slides are available in PowerPoint file format. The video can also be streamed through YouTube or iTunes U

Filippo Tommaso Marinetti. "Carissimo Betuda...".

Nico: Bridging the Gap Between Musician and Tesla Coil

    No full text
This paper describes the design and implementation of a new interface, Nico, which allows new and existing musical devices to control Tesla Coils. The interface uses an Arduino microcontroller to convert OSC and MIDI control data to TTL pulses that command the behavior of a Tesla Coil. This paper will give some background on the Tesla Coil, outline the design and capabilities of the interface, and will discuss the performance possibilities that Nico creates.fals
