In addition to a gala dinner celebrating their 60th anniversary, Federation developed an all-day institute on the past, present, and future of the organization, focusing especially on scholars and commentators unaffiliated with Federation to offer a unique perspective on Federation and its philanthropic activities. Selective digitization of sound recordings made at the Federation of Jewish Philanthropies of New York's 60th Anniversary Institute include Irving Kristol discussing the special responsibility that the Jews of New York have in relation to the current fiscal crisis in New York City and what assistance private philanthropy can provide through social service during an inevitable retrenchment and, then, Victor Gotbaum speaking about understanding the variations of Jews within New York City and the need to help the poor, regardless of race or religion, to alleviate the current fiscal crisis. Professor Irving Greenberg reacts to previous institute speakers about the internal and external crises facing Federation and the New York Jewish community. President Harry Mancher and Executive Vice President Sanford Solender conclude the day with their respective remarks.Digital recordingDigital finding aid
