Temporal-spatial Paradigms in Chinese Domestic Architecture
As seen in Confucian traditions, Chinese thought presents a cyclical, multidimensional conceptualisation of time, deeply rooted in cosmic harmony and rituals. The Chinese house, often marginalised in historiography, embeds the complex interplay between space and time. Unlike the Western emphasis on spatial complexity, Chinese homes are spatially minimal yet richly imbued with temporal rituals. This can be observed in courtyard-centric designs and Confucian hierarchies that shape family and societal dynamics. Ritual cycles govern daily activities and intergenerational relationships, embedding a continuity that transcends physical design. This paper explores how traditional Chinese domestic architecture’s temporal-spatial paradigm and historical roots in ritual systems have been reinterpreted in contemporary practices. Through three case studies of an urban apartment, a rural house, and a renovated house in a fishing village, it examines how contemporary Chinese designers reimagine domesticity. By using cyclical temporality as a primary design tool, they offer a perspective on architecture’s dialogue with time and space
Manipulating Scarcity in a Unesco Heritage Site: The Case of Langhe-Roero and Monferrato
The Langhe-Roero and Monferrato are an internationally renowned location where, under the
UNESCO World Heritage label, tourists can live a fully, 'authentic' experience in gastronomy,
local culture, visual delight and accommodation. Drawing on the theory of 'Enrichissement' conceived
by Luc Boltanski and Arnaud Esquerre, the contribution explores how
'authenticity' experienced today is carefully constructed through the revision of the past and the
manipulation of the notion of 'scarcity' towards 'exclusivity' and 'exclusion'
Città in vendita.
In a period with the image playing a central role, which tools contribute to the construction of the narrative of the city and its spectacularization, and how do they intertwine in its reading, overcoming its spatial dimension to sink into the economic-political one?
This essay aims to analyze the pervasiveness of narrative in the transformation of cities starting from the rapid change of the Chinese context, adopted as a lens to analyze phenomena belonging to the wider “global city”. By focusing on three different narration tools of the Chinese urban dream – slogans, renderings and exhibition halls – the article intends to observe how the “urban promise” is ar- ticulated and constructed, and in particular which declinations are assumed by the narrative construction in contemporary China and, by extension, in the glo- balized city
