This article, based on research undertaken by InfoCom Research Inc. for NTT, examines individual/residential use of the telephone. Generally speaking, use of the telephone has become increasingly diversified from messages/inquiries to chatting, and this trend can also be observed in Japan where many socio- economic changes have taken place since WWII. Telephone density increased rapidly as Japan passed the developing country level, and Japanese values and life-style changed tremendously with democratization, industrialization and urbanization. Maiwa Yoko, Broussard Marie, Nakano Chiemi.
